In his Bookies Corner article for the current issue of CQN Magazine, columnist, Blinkered Views, suggested St Mirren offered good value for a punt on relegation. I spoke to him when he submitted the article and suggested, “Surely Dunfermline?” He agreed Dunfermline were most likely for the drop but they offered no value. St Mirren, on the other hand, were 9/1 for the drop and he made a good case why this was worth a bet.
St Mirren promptly spoiled Christmas for thousands (not your or me) by coming from behind to beat Rangers but that has been their only win in 8 league games. We also don’t need to be reminded that when visiting St Mirren Park, form is a poor guide. Celtic exited the Scottish Cup there a week after beating Saints 7-0 at Celtic Park. They are a team who can raise their game for the big occasion and the visit of Celtic, live on TV, is as big as it gets around Paisley.
Paddy McCourt has enjoyed his visits there and has been key to Celtic collecting the points a couple of times. Don’t be surprised if he makes a match winning appearance from the bench.

No longer can we laugh and chortle at the ludicrous George Galloway and his despicable twice-weekly Lord Haw-Haw posturings.

As SunSport revealed yesterday, right, West Ham are now leading the chase to sign Jelavic in this month’s window.
Hammers owner David Sullivan personally contacted Whyte to open talks.
No bid has yet been tabled with McCoist admitting yesterday he was unaware of West Ham’s interest.
But the Gers boss has virtually resigned himself to the fact Jela will be sold — and he’s told Whyte that Holt is the man he wants to replace him if and when he goes.
It’s understood QPR are still monitoring Jelavic’s situation with new boss Mark Hughes weighing up an offer.
Upton Park boss Sam Allardyce is set to make a £6m bid. But Whyte has told Sullivan that WON’T be enough.
It’s understood Gers are demanding a whopping £10m.
A source close to Whyte told SunSport: “Rangers aren’t willing to let him go cheaply. Talks took place between the two owners. West Ham are seriously interested in Jelavic.
“But he’s vitally important to Rangers, so any offer will need to be a good one.”
Whyte insists he is in no hurry to sell but he’ll be under pressure if he does — with Holt the man McCoist will demand as his replacement.
The Gers boss said: “Craig feels that £6m was WELL short. If it was in that region, people would be wasting their time.”

Forget it, Sam! Rangers spurn £6m Allardyce offer for striker Jelavic
Rangers have “warned” West Ham that their £6million approach for Nikica Jelavic falls way below the club’s valuation of the striker.
Sam Allardyce is desperate to bring in a quality striker to boost the London club’s push for promotion back to the Premier League after being relegated last season.
After seeing his advances for Scotland wonderkid Jordan Rhodes rejected, he has now turned his attention to Jelavic but is being warned he will have to dig deep to secure the Croatian front man, with Rangers owner Craig Whyte placing a £10m price tag on his prized asset.
The Ibrox club are clearly hoping, however, that the initiation of talks will bring other interested parties out of the woodwork like QPR, Sunderland and Liverpool — and spark an auction for the striker………
A Rangers spokesman confirmed to Sportsmail that ‘informal talks’ between the two clubs had taken place but manager McCoist stressed: ‘No, there hasn’t been a bid. I made enquiries and there has been no offer put on the table for Jelavic from anyone.
‘And, having spoken to Craig and Ali Russell, I can certainly say that Craig feels the amount mentioned, £6m, was well short. So that was his view on it.
“Like I say, there has been no official bid at all. If it was in that region, people would be wasting their time.”
McCoist was in a more positive mood when he welcomed new signing Mervan Celik to the club, insisting the Swedish midfielder will have fans on the edge of their seats. Celik, a free agent after quitting GAIS, put pen to paper on a three-and-a-half year deal following a Murray Park medical. Handing Celik the No 24 jersey vacated by Madjid Bougherra,
McCoist revealed how the new man turned down more lucrative Bundesliga overtures to take his chances in Glasgow.
‘He’s very direct,’ said the Rangers boss. ‘He can play in a wide area or through the middle. He’s a type the fans will like, he’s very positive.’
Celik will have ‘Mervan’ printed on his jersey for fear of confusion with the Ibrox side’s city rivals….
but is ineligible to play against Aberdeen on Saturday, with his debut likely to be Hibs next weekend.
‘He’s very young at 21 but we would be very hopeful we could push him forward early and get him in the team,’ said McCoist. ‘I wouldn’t say he’s cocky, but he’s fearless. He just wants to take people on.’
Rangers face a £270,000 training compensation bill from GAIS, with McCoist admitting:
“There is an issue with compensation which hasn’t been settled yet, but that’s not really my gig.”
The player himself was delighted to complete the move, saying: ‘It has taken some time but I am very happy to be here. It is a very good set-up here — everything is perfect. ‘I have seen some games and I know the rivalry between Rangers and CELTIC. I know the expectations and my goal is to be an important player for Rangers in the second half of the season.’
Rangers were close last night to landing Estonian right-back Enar Jaager, while Honduran Jorge Claros is set to spend another week at Murray Park after impressing in trials.
A move for St Johnstone striker Fran Sandaza is close to collapse after McCoist withdrew the offer of a pre-contract.
‘The boys came in Monday, played Tuesday — both of them did really well,’ added McCoist. ‘And they did well in training yesterday and today. Claros has got another week’s training.
‘We’re hopeful we can put a proposal together for Jaager to come to the club.’
McCoist confirmed that the Ibrox club are also interested in Polish striker Pawel Brozek and Venlo’s Nigerian attacker Michael Unchebo,
while reports down south claimed he has failed in a loan bid for Norwich striker Grant Holt.
Sadly a football free weekend since I’ve only once in five years got a ticket against this mob. As usual Celtic end full and ¾’s of the rest of the stadium empty; perhaps they should call Dunfermline about how to make cash from this fixture!

Sweden Under-21 cap Mervan Celik joins Rangers
Sweden Under-21 midfielder Mervan Celik has signed for Rangers on a three-and-a-half year deal, having passed a medical early on Friday afternoon.
The player had left Gothenburg-based GAIS, who are expected to demand compensation for his development.
Celik will not be available to Rangers manager Ally McCoist to face Aberdeen at Ibrox on Saturday as he has not yet received international clearance.
He told Rangers TV: “I have made it to Glasgow and I am happy to be here.”
And Celik, who can play on either wing and began his career as a striker, added: “It has taken some time but it is finished now and I am very happy with that.
“It is a very good set-up here, it is a very nice training ground and everything is perfect.
“I was here last month and the club showed me everything and I liked the set-up so it is good to have the deal agreed now. Of course now I am very hungry to be involved.
“I am a player who always plays with heart.
“It doesn’t matter for me where I play, that is for the coaches to decide. Of course the fans can expect to see goals but I can also defend well.”
The player, who will wear the number 24 jersey with “Mervan” on the back, was spotted by Rangers scouts Neil Murray and John Brown before leaving GAIS under freedom of contract.
McCoist said: “Neil and John first brought him to our attention and Ian [Durrant], Kenny [McDowall] and I have all had a look and he’s very direct and very competitive.
“He can go past people and score goals and he can play wide in a four or five and in one or two games we’ve seen him through the middle as well.
“He’s an all-action player that I think the fans will take to, and more importantly he will be a goal-scoring threat when we get him in the team.”
Celik moved to GAIS on a three-year contract in 2009 having started out with city rivals Hacken.
The news of Celik’s arrival came hours after Scotland Under-21 attacking midfielder John Fleck completed his switch from Rangers to Blackpool on loan.
Veteran defender David Weiry is also to leave Ibrox within days after dropping out of the first-team picture.
Rangers manager McCoist’s funds are limited because of debts and an impending tax case.
