Brendan delivers again, why ex-Celt Miller isn’t getting a deal, Lions raffle

496

Yesterday we discussed how Brendan, like Jock Stein before him, liked to control the news agenda in the week of a big domestic game. Within hours Craig Gordon’s new contract, which was agreed some time ago, was announced.

This is genuine good news all round. The keeper has a new multi-year deal to look forward to. His manager has just out a substantial amount of confidence in him, in the shape of money. Brendan doesn’t need to worry about his others unsettling his goalkeeper.

Events like this impact on the dressing room too, in the opposite way to when a striker cannot get his contract extended beyond June.  Newco’s refusal to give Kenny Miller a new contract is totally understandable, but it will demotivate the player, and possibly others.

Miller’s agent moved for a new deal after the winter break, but the former Celtic striker has scored only six goals in 27 league games this season, two of those came when he had fresh legs in August.  Moussa Dembele scored as many in one and half games last month.  The stats don’t justify investing in a player who will be 38 this year, so I doubt that news management route will be open to Newco this week.

Still, I’m sure they’ll announce the appointment that director of football they have been briefing everyone about for weeks.  Failure to land him after being so open wouldn’t just be embarrassing, it would cast doubts on the board’s competency.

Lisbon Canvas Raffle Alert

In honour of Billy McNeill, who last week we learned is suffering from Alzheimers, Celtic artist Barry McGonigle (@BarryMcGonigle) has made this magnificent creation available for raffle in aid of Alzheimer Scotland.  Works like this are seldom open to raffle, instead they can reach over £1000 at auction, but it is such a magnificent piece, that we would like as many ordinary fans as possible to have a chance of winning.  Bertie Auld signed the canvas.

A few points:

The raffle is open for five days only – FIVE days!  So you stand an excellent chance of winning.

We ask for a minimum donation of £5.

You can enter through this MyDonate page, with the money going straight to Alzheimer Scotland.

Please make sure I have contact details from you (email me at celticquicknews@gmail.com with the word “Canvas” in the subject, just in case) to make sure I can get in touch if  you win.

I can deliver in central Scotland, at Celtic Park, or by collection in Lanarkshire.

It looks great online but trust me, the impact when you stand in front of it is substantial.  What a great present or keepsake for someone.

Good luck!

  1. Hunderbirds are Gone on

How was the defender meant to alter the trajectory of his slip?

Does there not have to be intent for a foul to be awarded?

  2. P67

Certainly the most dramatic match I have ever seen. Some controversies but both teams as bad as each other. Love football! Barca’ name is on it btw, you didn’t write them off did you ;)

  3. I’m sure someone had an article on here with the title: Tommy Gemmell: “They’re all great goals”, anaw.

  4. GlassTwoThirdsFull on

If “wee” teams like PSG can get cheated like that it makes you wonder what chance we might have of getting anywhere.

  5. Free money tonight from the Bookies……………

    Barca h/t & f/t @11/10 = free bet @7/1 Barca to qualify!

  6. HUNDERBIRDS ARE GONE

Even though it was accidental he did impede what was a goalscoring opportunity.

Thats why i i think it was.

The second was a joke.A known diver dives and the ref duly rewards him.

Just my opinion of course as i am no expert but there are some on here who are very clued up on the rulebook who could clarify.

  7. One armed one handed. The same difference:-))

Memories still retained just a wee bit fuzzy and jumbled.

  8. Paul67

I don’t think there is a lot of mystery re 5 minutes being added.

All 6 substitutions were used- that should give you 3 minutes straight away at 30 secs a sub.

There were 2 penalties and they take time to set up and take place as the penalised team argue the point (with justification as it happens). And both teams committed 16 and 25 fouls respectively with 10 yellow cards.

That’s a lot of stop:start in a game and 5 minutes does not cover it.

  9. I remember a few years back some guys on here saying we should cut Neymar some slack for his cheating as he was young. Well he’s a bit older now and cheats just as much, if not more than ever. Like the scorpion and the frog story – it’s in his nature. Same with Alucard Suarez – another cheating count.

At least on Sunday we can watch a team play some honest football against 14 cheating bassas. C’mon the Hoops.

  10. What a game at the Nou Camp!

I think PSG got complacent after the 80 minute mark and got punished for it.

As for folk complaining about Barca being cheats, they are 100% right but I’m afraid that 99.9% of professional footballers (in fact, footballers at any level) are cheats.

Diving is only one form of cheating, granted it can be more rewarding in terms of the consequences it can have (penalties etc) but pulling an opponents shirt in the box during a corner is cheating.

Deliberately fouling an opponent on the halfway line to stop a counter attack is cheating.

Appealing for a throw in when you KNOW for a fact it’s not your ball is cheating.

Any deliberate foul to stop your opponent advancing towards your goal is a form of cheating as you are deliberately breaking the rules.

We can’t say that one form of cheating is worse than another and that there are different categories and classifications, you can’t pick and choose which ones you accept and which ones you don’t.

If you’re going to condemn diving you must condemn ALL forms of cheating but sometimes we find ourselves saying “that was a good foul to give away”.

I have learned to not necessarily like it but accept it and live with it because I know it will never change.

    Just my tuppence worth anyway.

Oh – and anyone wondering where the five minutes of injury time came from. It was only five minutes because they scored in the fifth minute. If they had needed twenty they would have got twenty.

  12. Could be an all Spanish final of coursed the EPL crowd tell us La Liga is a two team league.

  13. Paul 67

Six subs should add 3 minutes.

    In fact 6 were played.

They would have been superfluous had PSG fielded a decent ‘keeper.

  14. Huntlybhoy86

    Well said.

I have often thot what a game would be like if it was played by the rules 100%, sadly never seen one nor likely to.

  15. I have 2 Barca tops and a Celtic/Barca scarf.

Earlier this season I started to think that my affection for them had waned. Tonight confirmed it. I was absolutely gutted when that last goal went it. I’m utterly sickened by their gamesmanship. How many penalties did they claim in that second half. About 7 or 8?

Personally, I don’t think either of the penalties were justified. I’m not sure of the ruling with regards to the first one. Does there not need to be some intent?

Come On, Dortmund! Let it be your year.

  16. !!Bada Bing!! on

SFTB- The lack of injury time in games is a great gripe of mine, the 30 second a sub is only used in certain games, goal difference can affect promotion/relegation, guys have bets running etc.The amount Sevco have had at home this season , when they are not winning is remarkable btw.

  17. Also,

The cynical chop from Varati on Messi in the lead up to the 6th goal was no different to Suarez diving to win the penalty, both players doing whatever they felt they needed to in order to make their team progress.

Not saying it’s a good thing by any means but there is not one team on this planet who will go through a 90 minute game without cheating.

Obviously, some are so much better at it than others ;0)

  18. Did Barca win bust a few coupons tonight?

Second penalty looked a stick on stonewall penalty in real time.

After seeing the first replay angle it looks like a dive.

However from the angle behind goal you can see that the defenders knee hits Suarez on back of calf.

Therefore It’s a penalty in the modern game. There is contact .

It may not be Corinthian spirit but that boat sailed long ago.

The reality is that modern strikers feel contact they go down, why should they adjust their stride to account for the defenders clumsiness.

Football, despite every pundit repeating it is NOT a contact sport.

    Rugby is a contact sport

American football is a collision sport.

Football allows for incidental contact when it doesn’t impede the player.

The modern player takes the interpretation away from the ref and makes the impediment obvious by going down.

Sometimes he gets booked, sometimes he gets the decision.

However if stays on his feet and misses because he has been marginally impeded he gets ignored by the ref who is glad that he dihave to make a call.

It is gutting when it happens to us…… but our players are no Saints when it comes to exploiting the modern interpretation of the Laws of the Game.

Rangers players told today that the new manager will be in Glasgow in next 48 hours. Unlikely to be in charge of game v Celtic.

    Just 48 hours then.

    I echo TET’s “well said”.

Too little focus on defenders’ / midfield ball-winners’ cheating.

Probably something to do with it being ‘a man’s gemme’.

  25. Anyway,

Four more sleeps before the Champions take to the field again! Sooner I get to sleep the sinner it becomes three sleeps. Night Champions!

  26. Thought that was a great match tonight. As a neutral it had it all. Drama controversy and an unbelievable come back.. Really what more do you want.

Personally I thought Barca Played without a defence for the last half hour but with a level of such skill and confidence that it didn’t matter.

Their forward play tonight was a joy to watch. Passing to a player inside the box even though he is surrounded by 3 defenders and is then still able to offload a pass was commonplace for these players. They have the skill to overcome the crowded defence.

I can only dream that our ghuys will reach such a level and have the confidence to carry it forward.

Obviously this would not be a new thing for us
