Brendan delivers again, why ex-Celt Miller isn’t getting a deal, Lions raffle

496

Yesterday we discussed how Brendan, like Jock Stein before him, liked to control the news agenda in the week of a big domestic game. Within hours Craig Gordon’s new contract, which was agreed some time ago, was announced.

This is genuine good news all round. The keeper has a new multi-year deal to look forward to. His manager has just out a substantial amount of confidence in him, in the shape of money. Brendan doesn’t need to worry about his others unsettling his goalkeeper.

Events like this impact on the dressing room too, in the opposite way to when a striker cannot get his contract extended beyond June.  Newco’s refusal to give Kenny Miller a new contract is totally understandable, but it will demotivate the player, and possibly others.

Miller’s agent moved for a new deal after the winter break, but the former Celtic striker has scored only six goals in 27 league games this season, two of those came when he had fresh legs in August.  Moussa Dembele scored as many in one and half games last month.  The stats don’t justify investing in a player who will be 38 this year, so I doubt that news management route will be open to Newco this week.

Still, I’m sure they’ll announce the appointment that director of football they have been briefing everyone about for weeks.  Failure to land him after being so open wouldn’t just be embarrassing, it would cast doubts on the board’s competency.

Lisbon Canvas Raffle Alert

In honour of Billy McNeill, who last week we learned is suffering from Alzheimers, Celtic artist Barry McGonigle (@BarryMcGonigle) has made this magnificent creation available for raffle in aid of Alzheimer Scotland.  Works like this are seldom open to raffle, instead they can reach over £1000 at auction, but it is such a magnificent piece, that we would like as many ordinary fans as possible to have a chance of winning.  Bertie Auld signed the canvas.

A few points:

The raffle is open for five days only – FIVE days!  So you stand an excellent chance of winning.

We ask for a minimum donation of £5.

You can enter through this MyDonate page, with the money going straight to Alzheimer Scotland.

Please make sure I have contact details from you (email me at celticquicknews@gmail.com with the word “Canvas” in the subject, just in case) to make sure I can get in touch if  you win.

I can deliver in central Scotland, at Celtic Park, or by collection in Lanarkshire.

It looks great online but trust me, the impact when you stand in front of it is substantial.  What a great present or keepsake for someone.

Good luck!

At least the Champions League’s official website doesn’t say Leicester are trying to stop Real Madrid equalling their record of 12 wins in the tournament.

Sum up the SPFL for us, why don’t you?

Well enjoyed that game, Barca scored two duff goals and as for the penalties, the first the PSG guy fell over and Barca man runs into him, as for the second , well cheating….

  3. Is there really a place in the CL for a team that gets humped 6-1? I mean, diddies or what.

Joking aside, if you play with fear you get what you deserve, more often than not. Craven performance from PSG.

Too much corruption on and off the park. All the skill and ability in the world doesn’t compensate for it in my eyes.

The top level of football is a grotesque caricature.

  5. Anyone who has read `The Chimp Paradox ` will realise that the Chimp loved that game whilst the Human saw it as more evidence of corruption in football.

    Goodnight all,

PS Any more news on James Forrest`s injury (cause by a tackle which, if I remember correctly, the ref did not see as a foul !).

  6. I think Brendan said Wee James was back in training.

Paddy for 60 to help us go four up.

James for 30 to nail the other 2.

It’s the premeditated nature of the cheating that hacks me off…go on! Touch me…I dare you…

Entertaining end to an okay game…

Yeah, if only the rest of the football world could attain the high level of Sporting Integrity we see in the Scottish game.

  10. That would be the interweb back online then, only taken since friday, mega storm, little villages are left to the end to get utilities restored and folks like me away from the village are even longer to get things like interweb online again, winkers.

Went to the bar to watch the Barca game, first bit of bother I have seen here in nearly nine years, caused by a Frenchman calling out Suarez for being a cheating kant, a couple of Barca fans took exception, no blows but mighty close, the Frenchman was 100% right and everyone in the bar knew it, but integrity has no place in football anymore, just ask them who are running our club.

I had it in my mind that he only had one arm.

I was still in my teens that night. By only a month mind you.

Memories jostle for space these days.

  12. As i often say the refs understand what decisions to make if they want to stay part of the gravy chain.

I thought the first penalty award was right but the second one was a dive.

Lost count of the amount of penalty claims Barcelona made.

They have talent but their gamesmanship and entitlement leaves a bad taste.

Have to question the bottle of PSG also?

Is that their first choice goalie as he was hopeless?

When i think of how many clear penalties we have been denied in Europe against big tv market teams and watched numerous dodgy decisions against us i’m sickened.

Scotland i at least understand the racist reasons for cheating.

But to know in Europe that it’s only to enrich the already wealthy’s back accounts is gut wrenching.

Be thankful you are in a hun free environment. Imagine them in your bars???:)

  14. Some need to chill on the hyperbole.

The game had an early goal then nothing for circa 40mins.

Either side of the break there was a freak own goal and a player slipped, allowing Neymar to buy a penalty, before PSG pulled a goal back.

Two normal goals and two freaks. Then nothing until 88th min. Neymar scored a great free kick, before Suarez stages a ridiculous dive for another(!) penalty.

The really unbelievable story? An incredible(!) 5 mins added time gave a game which was dull for long periods a bizarre story.

    There.

  15. Delaneys Dunky

Not quite as dodgy as a 4 -year -old club going for 55, but, er, debatable tie-changing penalty, from what I saw in a busy, enthralled bar in deepest Ayrshire.

Still, the great PSG team, so lauded on here a couple of weeks ago, can keep possession for the couple of minutes remaining, surely?

    Oh, no, they can’t!

I know, I hate those ‘ normal’ goals. Greatest ever reversal of a first-leg score since the Champions League began deserves no hyperbole. Perfectly ‘normal’, nothing to see here. Don’t get excited, whatever you do!

Trust me they wouldn’t last here, they would have to be mob handed and even then I doubt it, there is a hun that lives in a valley a few miles away but he keeps his god shut around me, never talks about football, never, every time I see him I make a point of asking him how the huns are doing, watching his pain is exqusite so it is :-)
