Brendan delivers again, why ex-Celt Miller isn’t getting a deal, Lions raffle

496

Yesterday we discussed how Brendan, like Jock Stein before him, liked to control the news agenda in the week of a big domestic game. Within hours Craig Gordon’s new contract, which was agreed some time ago, was announced.

This is genuine good news all round. The keeper has a new multi-year deal to look forward to. His manager has just out a substantial amount of confidence in him, in the shape of money. Brendan doesn’t need to worry about his others unsettling his goalkeeper.

Events like this impact on the dressing room too, in the opposite way to when a striker cannot get his contract extended beyond June.  Newco’s refusal to give Kenny Miller a new contract is totally understandable, but it will demotivate the player, and possibly others.

Miller’s agent moved for a new deal after the winter break, but the former Celtic striker has scored only six goals in 27 league games this season, two of those came when he had fresh legs in August.  Moussa Dembele scored as many in one and half games last month.  The stats don’t justify investing in a player who will be 38 this year, so I doubt that news management route will be open to Newco this week.

Still, I’m sure they’ll announce the appointment that director of football they have been briefing everyone about for weeks.  Failure to land him after being so open wouldn’t just be embarrassing, it would cast doubts on the board’s competency.

Lisbon Canvas Raffle Alert

In honour of Billy McNeill, who last week we learned is suffering from Alzheimers, Celtic artist Barry McGonigle (@BarryMcGonigle) has made this magnificent creation available for raffle in aid of Alzheimer Scotland.  Works like this are seldom open to raffle, instead they can reach over £1000 at auction, but it is such a magnificent piece, that we would like as many ordinary fans as possible to have a chance of winning.  Bertie Auld signed the canvas.

A few points:

The raffle is open for five days only – FIVE days!  So you stand an excellent chance of winning.

We ask for a minimum donation of £5.

You can enter through this MyDonate page, with the money going straight to Alzheimer Scotland.

Please make sure I have contact details from you (email me at celticquicknews@gmail.com with the word “Canvas” in the subject, just in case) to make sure I can get in touch if  you win.

I can deliver in central Scotland, at Celtic Park, or by collection in Lanarkshire.

It looks great online but trust me, the impact when you stand in front of it is substantial.  What a great present or keepsake for someone.

Good luck!

Might be an easy one but one trivia question I’ve never seen on here or other Celtic sites.

Who is the only Celtic player to captain Scotland at U15 level and every team in between to the senior national side?

    No googling now

    THE CALM BEFORE THE STORM

‘I can remember going to breakfast then going a wee walk,’ Bobby Lennox recalled of May 25, 1967. ‘Then, since it was a Holy Day of Obligation, a priest who was a friend of John Clark said Mass in the hotel for us. We came back had a bit of lunch and then we all rested for a while. Jimmy and I went up to the room had a wee blether, sat about for a bit, then just waited to go, as it was a half-five kick-off which was quite a strange at the time. The bus went the wrong way to the stadium and we were a bit late getting there. We went on to the pitch and saw the Celtic supporters, before going back in and then it was quickly time to get back on the field. Then we walked into the big long tunnel when Bertie Auld singing started The Celtic Song and that’s when the Inter players saw that we were really up for it.’

    Monday 9th March

I have left this rather late tonight and it is cold. The priest Fr Murphy was in. I had a discussion with him on the situation. He said he enjoyed our talk and was somewhat enlightened, when he was leaving.

On the subject of priests, I received a small note from a Fr S. C. from Tralee, Kerry, and some holy pictures of Our Lady. The thought touched me. If it is the same man, I recall him giving a lecture to us in Cage 11 some years ago on the right to lift arms in defence of the freedom of one’s occupied and oppressed nation. Preaching to the converted he was, but it all helps.

It is my birthday and the boys are having a sing-song for me, bless their hearts. I braved it to the door, at their request, to make a bit of a speech, for what it was worth. I wrote to several friends today including Bernie and my mother. I feel all right and my weight is 60 kgs.

I always keep thinking of James Connolly, and the great calm and dignity that he showed right to his very end, his courage and resolve. Perhaps I am biased, because there have been thousands like him but Connolly has always been the man that I looked up to.

I always have tremendous feeling for Liam Mellowes as well; and for the present leadership of the Republican Movement, and a confidence in them that they will always remain undaunted and unchanged. And again, dare I forget the Irish people of today, and the risen people of the past, they too hold a special place in my heart.

Well, I have gotten by twenty-seven years, so that is something. I may die, but the Republic of 1916 will never die. Onward to the Republic and liberation of our people.

  7. Getting ready to start a very sad journey to say goodbye to my friend of Thirty Five years, l am also privileged to be asked to Carry Jim in and out of Church

Then I could go into my local coop, ask for a lighter demanding it was any colour but green and when given said lighter and refuse it because yellow isn’t a colour I like either. I blame government funded Catholic schools for that level of education, bigotry and hatred.

Anyway I just couldn’t resist. While the obvious Hun stood there packing his shopping as I was next in line I requested 3 lighters, one Orange, one White and one green, oh and throw in a yellow one to. It’s not a colour in the Irish tricolour but he doesn’t like it so I’ll take it. £4 doon just to get it up a Hun. The look on his face was priceless. Ugly funt too.

Lighters will be on eBay later.

  11. Only regret for Paul was the teams he had to play in during the 90s.

Can you imagine how good he could’ve been with big Vic, Lambert or Lenny beside him doing the simple stuff.

Still a fabulous player and a hero of mine but was weighed down at times IMO because of the poor quality of his team mates at times

Beg your pardon Hot Smoked it was u16s upwards.

Paul played in u16s Scotland team that beat England 5-4 at Wembley, he played a blinder and scored two ( i think ) of the goals.

Great player for us who carried the team at times

  14. I know Patrick Roberts and the Griff were very good on Sunday but I am hoping James Forrest will be ready for this Sunday`s game. Imagine an extremely unlikely scenario whereby Paddy , GMS and Griff play for the first half then Jamesie , Sinky and Moussa for the second ……just to annoy THEM 0:-))

  15. Had mixed feelings at the end of the Barca game yesterday evening. One thought did cross my mind and that was when the referee’s assistant behind the goal told the ref. to award a penalty. Did the SFA not have a teach in on the possibility of the man behind the goal helping the ref in games. Oh wait, here in Scotland do we not follow the Dallas Code for referees and assistants? Strange that it has not become the norm in Europe since Dallas was put in charge of that department at UEFA. i

  19. Good morning.

I noticed this little gem when I logged in, and I noticed this AM that no ones posted it, .

Has the CT got a membership drive on or what?

They won’t like this kind of positive stuff about our board from our fearless leader,:)))

BRENDAN RODGERS reckons introducing a transfer window for managers would bring greater stability to clubs.

Players can, of course, move during designated weeks in summer and winter, but there are no such restrictions on team bosses.

The Celtic gaffer said: “It wouldn’t be too disadvantageous for managers to have a transfer window, too.

“I think there should be a window to change managers.

“Players have it and I think it brings some organisation to the chaos and it could be done for managers.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if, in the future, that’s the case.

“If we don’t have that, you lose the qualities of people.”

Rodgers insisted the backing he has from the Parkhead board has enabled him to go about his business on the coaching pitch without having to be concerned about other matters.

He said: “I think where I’m fortunate here is that the board ooze quality. They have a strategic approach to it.

“There’s a strategy in place here for how they want to work which was one of the big attractions for me coming in. So, that then allows me to get on with my work and improve the football club.”

Despite that, he remains realistic that nothing lasts forever in football.

He added: “I think from a manager’s perspective I am resigned to the fact that my plan to manage for 1,000 games or until I’m 60, I might have three or four jobs in that period.

“I think the timeline on a manager now is just over a year, according to the latest LMA figures.

“Over 60 per cent of them don’t get a second chance in management.

    “So, it’s becoming extremely difficult.”
