Bring it on, Celtic

Icelandic champions, you say?  Not much to worry about there, you would hope.  But Stjarnan knocked Lech Poznan out of Europe last season, and Poznan went on to take the Polish league from our old pals Legia Warsaw, who were a pretty decent team last season.

Stjarnan were not nearly as good as Lech Poznan, nor were they as good as Motherwell, who they also put out of Europe a year ago, but get your close-season wrong (the Polish Ekstraklasa doesn’t break until June), and you’re out, no matter if it’s Stjarnan or Maribor on the match ticket.

Let me put it another way, I wouldn’t fancy St Johnstone against Stjarnan right now, and Saints won at Celtic Park as recently as March.  A red card in the wrong place (need I remind you of Efe, big Dan?) and you’re in trouble.

I’ve not seen the new livery on Celtic Park, the photos of which look superb, so I’ll be along early tonight to drink in the summer atmosphere.  There’s also the anticipation of looking forward to seeing a few new faces in competitive action for Celtic for the first time.

The most important performance of tonight will be from Dedryck Boyata.  More than any other area of the team, defence is all about partnerships, so how quickly Dedryck fills the Jason Denayer gap will go a long way to determining whether Celtic qualify for the Champions League group stage this season.

Remember to swap out your old season ticket from your wallet with your NEW ticket!

Bring it on, Celtic.

I knew a BBC R5 match commentator (his parents lived next door) during the years of magical realism and used to chat to him a few times a year. He’s no longer in the job.

At the time of the creative valuation of Ibrox to mask what looked even then like certain insolvency (2003?), I asked this BBC man why the corporation wasn’t getting to grips with the story. He said: “Rangers are institutionally protected.” He would not be drawn further.

Treat every game as a potential iceberg, but with the view that they have to worry about us more than the other way round.

    Confident,not supremacist,approach will see us fine,I reckon.

    So fingers crossed then…

Hope you all enjoy the match, folks. My folks will be in their usual pre-match Creighton stall.

    “FEAR NO FOE

PUMA has today launched the 2015/16 [Sevco] third kit.

With the graphic design inspired by the 1990s; paying homage to the era of Rangers domination in Scottish football….. Strategically placed ACTV strips within the jersey micro-massage specific areas and enables a faster and more effective energy supply to the muscles.

The graphic alternative shirt provides a stark contrast to the clean lines seen on the home and away shirts and features the new black ‘formstripe’ design on the sleeves, with the colour purple symbolizing football royalty.

[Sevco] Chairman, [The Artless Dodger], said: ‘[Sevco] are happy to be in a partnership which brings such prestigious brands together. Puma understands the Club’s heritage and we also recognise Puma’s global standing. We hope this season brings joint success.’

Ruth How, Head of Marketing, PUMA UKIB, added: “‘[Sevco] has one of the richest heritages in European football. So as official kit supplier, we wanted to incorporate this into the design of the kits and the alternative shirt gave us the opportunity to deliver a standout graphic inspired by their rich history.’ ”

I’d feel a lot happier if Boyata had Virgil alongside him tonight. If we can keep a clean sheet it would be a big plus. I’d love 4-0 but would settle for 1-0.

Guy on an Inter blog said this after last August’s Stjarnan 0 . Inter 3 first leg Europa League tie .

” I won’t be opening the Prosecco. . Stjarnan were so poor that they managed to make Dodo, Juan Jesus and Ranocchia look like footballers . . Dodo scored . I repeat , Dodo scored . . . I will be disappointed if we fail to score 10 when we play them in Milan “.

    He was destined to be disappointed – Inter only managed a 6 -0 win . . .

  14. The fact that there is apprehension and a lack of confidence amongst most fans, shows what effect last years ‘comedy of errors’ has had on us.

These first two rounds should be ‘toffee’ for a club like ours – any concern should not creep in until the ‘play-off’ round.

I would love to say that we will easily defeat tonight’s opposition – but I just hope to God we do.

Like Paul, I will be there early to ‘inspect’ the stadium and ‘soak-up’ the atmosphere – it looks like an ideal night weather-wise – let’s hope we can get 40k inside.

A good convincing win will do wonders for staff, players and fans – the performance IS as important as the result – let’s hope for, five out of five, for each.
