Building Leigh Griffiths

324

I doubt even Leigh Griffiths’ dad thought he had this kind of form in him when he signed for Celtic in January last year. The then 23-year-old had ‘squad filler’ written all over him as he waited in line behind Gary Hooper and Anthony Stokes. The arrival of John Guidetti and Stefan Scepovic a year ago could have limited Leigh’s chances further, but neither showed enough form to make the striker position their own.

Prospects looked bleak last season. Two starts before Christmas, Leigh spent time with the youths and looked to be heading out of the club in January, but with the manager’s mind increasingly made up on Guidetti and Scepovic, he got his chance. The transformation has been remarkable. His goals return compares to the best in the modern era, but it’s the type of goals he scores which has caught the attention most.

He’s fast, skilful, can out-jump central defenders and scores goals in big games. Should Celtic choose to play with Carlton Cole as a target man, Leigh will also be able to play to his left.

Whatever Ronny Deila achieves this season, the improvement in Leigh Griffiths will feature high up the list.  Leigh’s attitude to self-improvement is also worth noting.

There’s some stuff re the OBaF Act that I can’t post because it would possibly have a negative effect on ongoing matters.

What is known is that there have been numerous occasions where it’s been evident that the police have quite blatantly lied.

I actually agree with you about the Aberdeen supporter’s song being of a sectarian nature. My point, poorly made, was in a more general sense regarding such songs.

Ye I commented on the clip. It’s absolutely brilliant!!

  6. I bet Jose is ruing the day he crossed swords with Eva Carneiro. It’s no coincidence that off field activities have coincided with poor form and possibly the” losing of the dressing room”

There is no doubt that Mourinho is still one of the best and charismatic managers about, but even the best cannot cope with off field disruption.

Ronny take note and be ruthless if need be..

LG is playing at a level I didn’t believe he was capable of.

I think he is due high praise for getting his head together and sticking in when he was away from the team, out the picture and playing with the development squad. Great response.

And praise to Ronny for laying it on the line, as I guess he did with Anthony Stokes as well, but got a different response.

I was not whelmed in the least about the Carlton Cole signing, but the more I watched on Saturday the more I thought that he could be a very effective foil for Griff and also James Forrest, pulling defences about the place.

(In the past, I was not whelmed at all when we signed a fair few front men, Dixie Deans or later Chris Sutton spring to mind, so wtf do I know)

Very happy we have signed up Nir. Excellent news!

I will be even happier when we right the wrong of Molde and rattle a good few past them on Thursday.

  10. Magnificentseven on

I mentioned this after the game at the time, I think it was Motherwell at home last season. Ronny had a real go at Griff for a bit of slack play, instead of going in a strop he stepped it up and put in a performance for the rest of the game. I said then that he had grown up, he is showing it now, great attitude and obviously taking on board the coaching he is being given

I was sceptical about Griff’s ability to score(goals that is) in Europe. Now, I think that he can do it at CL level.

Mmm – Been there / done that .

Twice in Glasgow and once in London.Charged / prosecuted and found guilty on the basis of lying policemen.Lies about where I was and what I was doing .Lies about what they were doing and what I had said .Best one was where 4 SPG chaps in London converted me telling a friend to shut it or these people will arrest you into a charge of obstructing the police in their lawful duty..

Pathetic .I felt sorry for them.Paid for telling lies .( and receiving much less than a lawyer / estate agent / churnalist etc ..

Brilliant news – well done Celtic.

  20. Congrats to Pedro on getting Nir signed on along term contract, fantastic bit of business. Leigh has definitely come on in leaps and bounds this year. He is always extremely busy on the pitch and is really buzzing. At the moment he is our most valuable player.

The despair following the Molde game has completely dissipated but a bad result on Thursday and it will be back in spades.

We can do it Thursday but we need to start cautiously and play ourselves into the game, we can’t win it in first 15 minutes but we could lose it.

  24. Not sure there will be many changes from Saturday.

Any update on big Jozo Simo ? Because for me that’s the most important factor in everything.

If he misses out, I have no faith in the centre of defence.

I think Forrest will start (right) I believe Commons will start (centre). I think Armstrong will start (left) .

However as like Saturday there, Forrest was effective ( left ). Rogic ( centre), Commons (Right) …

Above is the only real dilemma. The rest of the team picks itself.
