Burke and Weah weigh in, battle for second, Levein returns to norm

385

There can be little more satisfying experiences for a manager than seeing two new strikers get on the score sheet so quickly.  Oliver Burke and Timo Weah have scored twice since making their debuts on Saturday.  With Vakoun Issouf Bayo taking a halftime bow and Odsonne Edouard back in training, December’s scenario when Mikey Johnston was asked to play as striker seems a distant memory.

All Celtic can do to increase their lead at the top of the table is to continue to win and watch what happens below.  Kilmarnock moved into second place with a win over Newco last night, but they travel to fourth placed Aberdeen on Saturday, who, if they win, would be the third team to occupy second place within four days.

Earlier this season, when Hearts were top of the table and enjoying lots of media accolade, I was asked by someone not too familiar with the game if Craig Levein was a good manager.  At the time Craig was popping up everywhere, enjoying a glow of satisfaction.  “No.  Craig Levein is not a good manager” was my reply.  The Edinburgh are sixth and sinking fast.  Craig Levein’s performances have returned to the norm.

  1. WITS-JG- True, there are plenty on here who contribute very little, they love posting after a bad result.

  2. I’ve said it before many times, I believe we do NOT need a right back. Why oh why people cannot think for themselves baffles me, but instead, like a load of sheep, they jump on the band wagon. Lustig is getting on a bit, agreed, but the guy is still a very good player. We have great cover for him with Ralston, who will be a very good player and will learn a lot from Mr Lustig. So, I would tend to rotate them to keep them fresh .

So to some out there , please give some thought to what you say, and please think for yourselves.

On another matter, my gran’s auntie Maggie’s brother in law’s taxi driver said that Jamesy is for the off to Liverpool, hence the signings of wingers. You heard it here first.

  3. KingLubo- agree re Lustig and Ralston, ML was good last night, i think he has to retire from national team,to extend his time at CP

  4. thomthethim for Oscar OK on

I think Mikel Lustig should be kept for another year and used sparingly.

His experience and personality are a huge factor in the team and club in general.

  5. Can’t believe no onre mentioned another blatant offside decision given against us when Weah hit the post. The linesman knew he was onside and panicked when he though h would score

  6. Kinglubo –

I’m in your clique regarding Ralston, and indeed other young players. There’s a tendency to default to the ‘we need experience’ particularly in the defensive areas of the pitch. And yet we have before our very eyes Kieran Tierney, thrown in by St Ronny after Izzy had his bad injury and who retained his place.

So it’s not neccessarily experience we need. All we need are good players, regardless of age.

So long as Big Tony’s injury isn’t too serious then I too would think that he and Mik should be sufficient to see the season through. Unless of course we are able to bring in a higher quality (an oft repeated Brendan quote) right back.

Aff oot for my short lunchtime stroll to see if the icerink has melted

  7. For several years Chelski have trawled the market signing up players and lending them out – (over 30 at one point) – creating a lucrative income – don’t think the manager would be involved in most of these.

  8. King Lubo

Brendan said Ralston may be out for a while.

Ligament damage it seems.Shame as i liked what he brings.

So glad the transfer window is about to close.

    Speculation is frustrating and fun.

Though being a Celtic fan at this time usually ends up being like the kid who is mad at santa cause he didnae get whit he wanted.

Maybe before the summer window the coach and Lawell can have a boxing match with the prize being whoever wins decides transfer policy without others interference.

Another thing that has to be asked is are our medical and fitness staff failing us?

No other team in the league seems to lose so many first teamers to injury?

While the ref endorsed brutality against our players has some bearing there is more to this .

  9. 50 shades of green on

We have that many wingers we even play them as Strikers.

Midfield covered tons of them, some even play in defence

Strikers barra loads of them , some even play as wingers

Defenders lots n lots ,some are even playing as wingbacks…

    Buuuuuuuutt ……

We want more we want more we want more.

Now if you want Quality thats a different matter……..Who??? How much???? Will he come to Scotland’s backwater???? These are the questions, all I see is geesa right back,, gessa a CH,,,, name names ffs.

O wait dont name names cause some tube will cast it up l8r on…

  10. RE the Right Back debate, I am a big fan of Mad Mick but must say was given food for thought when McGinn rather naively said on TV that Lenny set up his team to target Lustig.

Regarding Ralston I have big hopes for the lad but he is not there yet and now that he has ligament damage in his ankle and will be out for a few weeks at least, I think we do need a new right back.

  11. Trying to catch up, I noted this comment at the bottom of the previous thread and felt it astonishing, if accurate, that SG is not asked to explain the circumstances of any exchange with the player.

If Bada,s comment last night on he heard that the scouser had words with Jordon Jones in the tunnel are true , then that’s Jones card marked for the cup game . I hope stevie Clark got the jist of it . Slippy g is more apt ,he is a horrible individual .

  12. Go tell the Spartim on

Our sports science team come under increasing scrutiny as every game passes, though something never gets factored in, regarding injuries. Watch any other match in the league and you will see that ours are refereed differently, how many times do agricultural tactics, including St Mirrens last night, go unpunished against us, ALL THE FREAKIN TIME, so before you malign them perhaps give that some consideration.

Like many others i think this is the last season in BR’s reign, anyone can apportion the blame whatever way they like, i know where my ire will go. Sadly the one running the football club lost against the man running the business, and here’s me thinking we were a football club first and foremost.

  13. The hands cant hit what the eyes cant see on

Good results last night. Glad to see Davis and Defoe getting a good (re)introduction to Scottish football on a plastic pitch. Certainly takes the wind out of the Sevco sails.

Am i right in thinking that Robbie Keane’s first game for us was away to Killie and ended in similar fashion? If so, augurs well (in this instance) for the rest of the season.

For us, Burke and Weah look like they will have a lot to contribute for the remainder of the campaign. Hopefully we can extend the loan period of Weah, if not both, but doubtful.

BR’s comment at the end of the night are not the best. Suggests (again) some discord behind the scenes and this supposedly after the meeting of DD, PL and BR.

  14. bada bing

if i dont know the celtic score, when i go to cqn i can tell by the nbr. of comments , if we won or lost.

we will know soon if br was stitched up. if he was i think he will give six months notice, if not!!!!!!

  15. BADA BING

The guy criticizing you for posting what you heard is being petty and personal.

I enjoy you and many others drivel ;-)

I feel qualified to make above statement as i post more drivel than most.

A blog is about individuals with opinions though this blog can be contentious with a pack mentality against some.

(WITS-JG- True, there are plenty on here who contribute very little, they love posting after a bad result.)

Does it matter if they contribute little?

And do they really only post after a bad result?

If it stimulates debate then they have merit.

Many on here i skim over because of their politics and agenda but i think they are entitled to post.

There are two posters on here who post long detailed and well thought out arguments.

One i skim over because his subject matter is not for me and the other plays a devils advocate role with a fair bit of deflection.

Both contribute greatly to the blog and though not my cup of tea i see them as valuable posters.

  16. At least I open up debates on here, and at least I get good responses, here is something I would like to say, Brendan Rodgers, making comments, like I have a million winger’s, makes me think ,he really isn’t signing players,he wants, then who is dealing with all the transfers, and that being the case, Brendan Rodgers will be away in the summer.

Someone made a good point about Chelsea sending upwards of 30 players out on loan every year.

This is what Brendan was alluding to when he said its not right to stockpile players:

    https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/46949844

With the post match comments last night on the Ukranian we realise why he said this.

I’m not totally against the signing and loaning out of players, but this guy is costing 1.75m-2m and (like Arzani) is an international.

Unlike Chelsea we don’t have £2m to throw away on projects – if we dont think can contribute resources should be concentrated on those who can contribute.

    Quality over quantity.

The most concerning thing is the obvious unease the manager feels about it all. He has spoken about waiting for quality that can challenge for a place now – that is not whats happening.

  19. Henderson impressing Brendan, maybe getting game time to play on plastic pitches ,he’s probably had more experience than most on them

  20. GlassTwoThirdsFull on

Never known Bada Bing to get a team line-up wrong. The bit about La Farty – is there not a rule that you can only play for two teams in a season? May be gone in the summer, who knows.

  21. 50 shades of green on

I’m surprised the huns got beat on plastic last night, after all they have been living on it for years ( both clubs before you start)…???

  22. Go tell the Spartim on

Did BR not say that “because of circumstances he became available” regarding the winger, obviously he has some knowledge of the deal. Context is important as i believe it was with reference to the media and them making stuff up, i paraphrase but he said here’s another headline for you “insert comments re the winger”

  23. I am an old man baffled by technology – and not just the new stuff.

Problem: If I use Google Chrome, my default, I can’t get the CQN blog page. I get a league table and a variety of links instead. To get articles and blogs I have to use internet explorer.

    Q. What do I do to remedy this?

There’s no prize for the answer but any help would be appreciated.

  24. I heard brendan is lining up an exit because he is fed up with the comments from people in the main stand.
