Burke and Weah weigh in, battle for second, Levein returns to norm

385

There can be little more satisfying experiences for a manager than seeing two new strikers get on the score sheet so quickly.  Oliver Burke and Timo Weah have scored twice since making their debuts on Saturday.  With Vakoun Issouf Bayo taking a halftime bow and Odsonne Edouard back in training, December’s scenario when Mikey Johnston was asked to play as striker seems a distant memory.

All Celtic can do to increase their lead at the top of the table is to continue to win and watch what happens below.  Kilmarnock moved into second place with a win over Newco last night, but they travel to fourth placed Aberdeen on Saturday, who, if they win, would be the third team to occupy second place within four days.

Earlier this season, when Hearts were top of the table and enjoying lots of media accolade, I was asked by someone not too familiar with the game if Craig Levein was a good manager.  At the time Craig was popping up everywhere, enjoying a glow of satisfaction.  “No.  Craig Levein is not a good manager” was my reply.  The Edinburgh are sixth and sinking fast.  Craig Levein’s performances have returned to the norm.

He does seem to be a long way ahead of VVD at the same stage of his career. I don’t thing Virgil had a cap when we sold him, at a time when the Netherlands defense was pretty rubbish, never mind when we bought him. Virgil wasn’t that young when we sold him

They’ve also got a history of developing and selling world class players. Ericsson at Spurs is another example

since WITS mentioned the Donald ….

who is going to be the one who ultimately brings him down …. will it be Mueller or the bumbling Guilliani?

  5. According to Videocelts, Maxwell has met with PL and refused to divulge the contents of Beaton’s reportof the game on 29/12, as he was in charge of the Hearts game last night he clearly has the support of the Maxwell and Fleming, last weeks meeting at Perth as I said at the time was pointless.

  6. Joe McHugh of Videocelts, is reporting that Maxwell snubs Lawwell’s request for the Beaton report and tells him to move on.

  7. Ajax signed the boy from william II in 2015 and can look forward to making a shite load of money on him. But see when you have a great stadium with great lights, heating and a roof and you have great training facilities how do you go about spending your money???? Do they have a hotel??

Being serious for a moment.I don’t think Donald is going anywhere fast.

A lot of very wealthy people are becoming even more wealthy thanks to his antics.

He is the fairground distraction while the pickpockets have a field day.

I dont disagree with your basic idea that some people are getting very rich off his antics…. but, the problem for him is that he is making more than those people think he should, and not enough for them.

Hence, even some of his former defenders/cronies … like some on Fox network, and Graham on Syria/military … are starting to turn on him.

Without their support, it is only a matter of time before hs is impeached…… but remember it took two years for the Nixon impeachment to work its way to the point where he was charged…

and there were only three charges I think for him … all arising from one incident – the break in at the DNC – and the attempt to cover it up ….

I suspect (and I’m pretty confident that I am on pretty strong grounds) that Mueller’s investigation will cover a whole cascade of issues relating to Trump’s business dealings…so, I am not surprised that it has taken as long as it has …

there is no doubt that he has violated the Title of Nobility clause (what is often called the emoluments clause of the constitution which prohibts people in government from using their office for personal gain).

I know that, for normal people, this process seems to have dragged on forever … but in lawyers years, this is but the blink of an eye

How much have we spent on a hotel?

  17. The fixture God seems to be leaning towards us.

Nice wee spell of home games while Stevie’s Champions Elect have a couple,of tricky trips in the run up to the split.

I’m not getting carried away by a couple of wins against inferior sides.

The main thing for me is that we have refreshed and strengthened the attack and increased the goal scoring potential. Support for French Eddy, Mikey and we hope a renascent Griffiths.

Burke as a striker is a wee bit of a surprise but BKB. Brendan knows best.

Weah is a talent with class oozing from him.

So both are only here for 6 months.

It will be enough to secure the title and put pressure on King’s finances and Gerrard’s geriatrics.

There wasn’t enough pressure on our defence to judge whether they have returned from the Gulf fully focused and fit for the run in.

I like Lustig and have confidence in his so called tired legs. If Ralston returns to fitness we can comfortable use both in tandem through the Spring.

Cover for KT is a concern with just Izzy a proven full back. Where is Calvin Miller?

Hopefully Kieran will soon return to full fitness.

There’s been a concerted cry for a CB.

ATM we have Ajer, Boyata, Benkovic, Compper, Hendry and Simunovic.

If Hendry leaves on loan, effectively 5 vying for 2 positions.

So Ben is on loan and Boyata is for the off in summer.

Our immediate goal is to win the SPFL. ( And bury the downstream upstarts.)

We have the personnel in place to secure the title and the treble treble.

We just need to keep faith in our management and players, and take some pleasure in our current status on top of the midden heap.

And I’m sure the naysayers will quickly spring into action if we make even a single slip.

  18. Joe McHugh of Videocelts, is reporting that Maxwell snubs Lawwell’s request for the Beaton report and tells him to move on.

Lawwell will be delighted it’s buried, you don’t stay on those UEFA Committees by causing bother.

I am no Watergate scholar, but I dont think that was part of the impeachment case … I think Liddy was involved in both, but I thought that this break-in was not even known until well after Nixon resigned. But, as I said, its not really my area of expertise..

but, as for the Donald? lets have some fun. 50 quid says he doesn’t make it to the end of two terms. Money goes to Mary’s Meals. you in?

  24. Loaning a guy for development has merit in that he gets actual game time.

But what about the habits he might pick up from a different environment which may make it more difficult to succeed in our system?

Chelsea don’t loan players for development. They loan them with a view of upping their resale value.

They generally make some bigger purchases for the team and punts on development.

We are in a difficult place as we can’t compete financially with bigger teams so the ones we buy for immediacy should have some experience.

Our best chance of producing top tier talent has to be with our youth set up so the pathway from there to first team is where we should look to improve.

  25. Good Post GG apart from including Compper as one of 5 vying for 2 positions if Hendry goes on loan. Don’t think Compper is vying for anything apart from the record of being the biggest waste of money ever.

  29. From Videocelts

Ian Maxwell has dismissed Celtic’s demand for John Beaton to explain why no action was taken on Alfredo Morelos’ various attacks on players during the December Glasgow derby.

The Ibrox striker escaped any censure during the match with Beaton failing to speak to Morelos let alone book or red card him for three well publicised attacks on Scott Brown, Anthony Ralston and Ryan Christie. Social media later highlighted two further incidents involving the Ibrox favourite who celebrated his actions on Instagram.

It was assumed that the Compliance Officer would pick up on those incidents, already this season three players have had retrospective suspensions for attacks on Celtic players.

Amazingly no action was taken against Morelos as the SFA leaked the news to their favoured media outlets- Sky Sports, BBC and the Press Association. No awkward follow up questions were asked, apparently Beaton viewed all of the incidents and was happy with his decisions.

Pictures later emerged of Beaton celebrating those decisions with his chums in the Crown Bar in Bellshill.

A day after news was leaked that no further action was being taken Celtic reacted, their statement was well received by supporters but some cynics suggested that there would be no follow up, much like the statement relating to Steven McLean’s performance in the 2015 Scottish Cup semi-final against Inverness Caley Thistle.

    Celtic stated:

In order to fully understand what is going on, Celtic, our supporters, Scottish clubs and the general Scottish football public need transparency in these matters, and we therefore call on the Scottish FA to allow the referee, John Beaton, to explain these decisions publicly as well as any match officials involved in other similar circumstances.

In the meantime, we have requested a meeting with Scottish FA Chief Executive, Ian Maxwell, and the Association’s Head of Refereeing.

Maxwell has wisely met with Celtic but refused to reveal details of Beaton’s report. The next move is upto Celtic.

The chief executive of the SFA has refused to disclose how one of their elite referees reacts to a kick on the genitals, stamping on someone’s back and a punch on the genitals.

Last night Beaton picked up his match fee and expenses for Hearts v Dundee, on Saturday he’ll be fourth official at Aberdeen v Kilmarnock, clearly he has the support of Maxwell and John Fleming.

Last Thursday the SFA staged a publicity stunt in Perth involving managers and referees. No specifics were mentioned but the message delivered was that VAR will resolve all of the problems and be available in a year #jamtomorrow. Full time referees will also be discussed. As a joker Neil Lennon will join a Think Tank on deflection.

VAR and full time referees aren’t part of the issue. The problem lies with John Fleming and his blind faith in the Lanarkshire Referee Association. Despite 12 regional referee associations the Lanarkshire cabal provided three of the four match officials at Ibrox. Beaton, Willie Collum, Andrew Dallas and Bobby Madden will be splitting up the big fixtures for as long as Fleming is in office and no one asks why.

Once again the solution to deep rooted problems in Scottish football is to move on for the good of the game.

Having raised supporter expectations with their Beaton statement it is up to Celtic to publicise the reasons for his performance at Ibrox.

If Celtic wish to sign up to another Moving On campaign they are part of the problem rather than the solution.
