Burke and Weah weigh in, battle for second, Levein returns to norm

385

There can be little more satisfying experiences for a manager than seeing two new strikers get on the score sheet so quickly.  Oliver Burke and Timo Weah have scored twice since making their debuts on Saturday.  With Vakoun Issouf Bayo taking a halftime bow and Odsonne Edouard back in training, December’s scenario when Mikey Johnston was asked to play as striker seems a distant memory.

All Celtic can do to increase their lead at the top of the table is to continue to win and watch what happens below.  Kilmarnock moved into second place with a win over Newco last night, but they travel to fourth placed Aberdeen on Saturday, who, if they win, would be the third team to occupy second place within four days.

Earlier this season, when Hearts were top of the table and enjoying lots of media accolade, I was asked by someone not too familiar with the game if Craig Levein was a good manager.  At the time Craig was popping up everywhere, enjoying a glow of satisfaction.  “No.  Craig Levein is not a good manager” was my reply.  The Edinburgh are sixth and sinking fast.  Craig Levein’s performances have returned to the norm.

Nice one, maybe its his site! Just saying it has an impressive hit rate on Celtic news, otherwise I wouldn’t have gone been a return visitor to it.

Seems to have touched a nerve on here, and given its similiar feel to CQN magazine, I wondered if maybe someone from here was behind it. Maybe not.

If they post anything that proves to be nonsense in the near future I will update everyone :)

  11. Apologies. Not as bad as I thought it would be on here.Well, considering the amount of agenda pushers we have.

Just thinking, the Huns on the plastic pitches 3 times in a fortnight.

  12. @Roberttressel

Like you, I heard Gerrard last night moaning about Worral ignoring his instructions: ‘no square passes on that pitch’. So I was surprised this morning to see in the highlights that Brophy robbed him of the ball when he turned his back hesitant to make a pass. It’s dubious enough to continuously cover your own arse by roasting your own players in public. That won’t go down well with them – but it must be especially galling when its nonsense.

On Shved – I was surprised by Rodgers ‘we have a million wingers’ comments. In context what he was saying made sense – though he should probably have been more careful with his phrasing. Likely come summer we will lose Weah and Burke, Hayes contract is up in 2020, Arzani is injured and a loanee so who knows. So in summer he comes in as competition/backup for Forrest and in the meantime is on loan (with Karpaty)? Viewed like that it seems like the sort of forward planning- having guys ready before needed– we have often failed at recently (Boyata, Lustig, Tierney)

Been saying for ages, if we play to our potential we will win this league comfortably. No need to be panicking about MSM-styled “challengers”. No other team will be able to match the points total we will achieve.

Kilmarnock and/or Aberdeen will drop points on Saturday. Just keep winning games and we will pull clear.

Looks like StevenGerrardsRangers maybe suffered from a lack of competitive football. Pity the organising body made the decision to postpone their game on Friday, completely on their own account and with absolutely no external input. But at least they pulled off a masterstroke in preventing Martin O’Neill from recalling Joe Worrall. And after watching two of his new signings finding the net, the former Liverpool captain must be feeling like the man with the Midas touch. A top four finish surely cannot be ruled out.

And so onto Saturday. Just keep winning……..

  19. GREENPINATA lots of those players are kids so dont/ should not be counted in first team p.s i share your view that the squad is to big, but we will likely see a big cull come the summer with 10 or so players likely to leave on free or return to own clubs. We then have 8 players the following season in same situation. I can see guys likely compper, malumba and hayes moving on before their contracts up too. With any luck we will replace those players with 3 or 4 first teamers or at least that what i hope happens.

Guys put things out to the blog to stimulate debate. It doesn’t have to be factual.

It’s a bonus when such ” scoops ” become fact.

    HH.

  22. Million wingers eh? BR knows how to frame an issue – brilliantly pointed.

I dont know how transfers really work, but guess it’s far removed from “Right Brendan, you’ll have 15 mill to spend on players every year, and if you make us profit by punting a few, you can add that to your stash…

    But allow me an analogy…

If I tell Ms Quadro I’d really like an anorak for Xmas, and she keeps getting me multiple pairs of summer shorts…

BTW, I like the way Ryan C is throwing his new-found bulk around. And, at LB I think Emilio is more of a team player than KT.

  23. Brendan’s comments are a worthy topic that deserves to be discussed but taking 2 comments spoken at different stages of the interview and putting them together as a single quote can give the wrong impression. I must admit I was take aback with Brendan apparently not knowing too much about the player.

There appears to be 2 side by side agendas re player recruitment one meeting the needs of the team and the second making money by trading in players.

There is absolutely nothing wrong in making money by trading in players as long as the team recruitment doesn’t suffer.

Re Team recruitment I would have thought we should be bringing in a centre half and a right back this window, with a view to next years Euro Qualifiers but Brendan has discounted the Centre Half saying any purchase wouldn’t be needed this season. However surely now that Ralston is injured a right back is an absolute must.

  24. i do hope at the next glasgow derby Burke and Weah morph into Scotlands newest grave robbers :)))

  25. In terms of Scouting, I believe that the manager specifys the type of players he is looking for and the Scouting department Identifys the Targets to Brendan. However, they may come across possible targets and they take them to Brendan for his opinion.

Squad Management is required as part of the Manager job and while we may not need a winger now we may need one in the next window. We should be thinking ahead and the manager has to consider if players contract is running down then should we offer him an extension or should we replace him.

Others on here have correctly identified that in fact we may well need a winger in the summer and Bredan should be considering that.

Perhaps Brendan is not thinking ahead far enough because he might not be here!!!

  26. STEPHBHOY on 24TH JANUARY 2019 12:35 PM

Agree with all your points. I believe our first team squad is circa 34.

I’m not a fan of short term loans as I believe it hampers our long term strategy. Players take time to gel both on and off the park .There is always an exception to this and hopefully Tim Weah proves that . Although would love to see him stay for a 12 month extension.

Imo that is why games like Valencia are so vital. It gives us exposure and profile which revetebrates around Europe.

Incidentally, is there a better Europa team than Salzburg ? Play to our full potential, take one game at a time and who knows ? It will not go unnoticed that we have a sell out when the majority of us are awaiting Jan payday. KTF.

I will support your call to increase PL’s bonus.

After all, he is basically running two clubs: his actions have allowed Celtic to turn a profit, while his inactions have allowed the zombies to stay alive (not an easy feat, when you consider how badly the rest of the zombie management seem intent on driving them under).

    ?

  28. I already have a million wingers is the phrase that should be worrying us today.

BR is not in charge of our transfer policy and unfortunately I see this ending only in one way come the summer.

  29. Levein and Hunny G calling out their flops in public, never seen a positive reaction from that.I have thought for a while that there is something medically wrong with Levein, his irrational rants make no sense.

Whatever the rights or wrongs of any real or perceived issue re player recruitment, it should be kept in house.

If Brendan is playing to the gallery with his ambiguous quotes, then I think he is in the wrong.

Any issues he may have should be between him and his employers. If they can’t be resolved, then unfortunately, he will be mutualled.
