Callum McGregor’s five mountains in five weeks

227

If results go their way, Scotland will tonight become the first team to qualify for the Euro 2024 in Germany next summer.  Norway and Georgia are both on four points.  A draw would see them move to five, 10 behind Scotland with three games remaining.

Either way, automatic qualification is inevitable, as, with Spain remaining on both their rosters, neither of the sides who meet in Oslo tonight are likely to reach 15 points.  Post-Scott Brown, James Forrest, Ryan Christie, Kieran Tierney and Stuart Armstrong, our exposure to Scotland games it limited to Callum McGregor.  It is some comfort he will be excused play-off games in the spring.

In the next five weeks, however, Callum is likely to face England, Feyenoord, Lazio, Spain and France, five exhausting matches, with four other Celtic games thrown into the mix.  We need him fresh and at his best for Rotterdam and the visit of the Romans.

With so much of the squad wilting, the role of the captain cannot be overestimated.  He should be rested whenever a safe goal margin permits.

  1. There’s just a few hours left for Season Ticket holders to secure their seat for the Celts’ UEFA Champions League group stage games, with 2pm TODAY (Tuesday) the deadline to buy online.

  2. I hope he is not rested on Saturday as I am taking my neighbour and his son and grandson who are visiting from Australia for the wee lad’s first game at Celtic Park so I am hoping for a good experience for the wee lad and with CalMac in the team that is more likely than not despite the rumours of his demise.

  3. KingLubo the last I read a day or two ago is that he is facing no football until the January window as he can no longer transfer anywhere and he is not in his current team’s squad.

Only possibility is that his contract is ripped up/paid off and he becomes a free agent therefore eligible to be signed outside of the transfer window.

Doubt he would return to us.

  4. Champions League squad announced:

    Celtic squad in full

    Goalkeepers: Joe Hart, Scott Bain

Defenders: Cameron Carter-Vickers, Alexandro Bernabei, Maik Nawrocki, Greg Taylor, Stephen Welsh, Gustaf Lagerbielke, Nat Phillips, Anthony Ralston, Alistair Johnston,

Midfield: Tomoki Iwata, Matt O’Riley, Callum McGregor, David Turnbull, Reo Hatate, Odin Holm, Yang, Palma

Forwards: Daizen Maeda, Kyogo Furuhashi, Hyeongyu Oh, Liel Abada

  5. Given the modern footballer’s hectic schedule a ‘friendly’ Scotland vs England match is stupid. An invitation to get injured for nothing.

The players should all be back at their clubs recovering & preparing for the weekend.

  6. I don’t think it will reflect too well on Iwata, Kwon, Bernado and Holm if BR feels the need to start CalMac in every domestic fixture.

A few anxious days waiting on Jackie’s treatment plan

She finally got an angiogram on Sunday morning and they found a narrowing of the artery but in a position that they felt it was in a difficult position for a stent. So we were preparing to go down the bypass route.

The good news is that she’s had 2 stents fitted this morning and should be home by tomorrow.

She’s seen the before and after x-rays and could see the massive difference.

    Check up in 3 months.

So thanks for all your prayers and good wishes.

Clearly, learned much from Scott Brown.

Our very own Petec has long been an admirer and has sung his praises on these pages.

  10. What is the point of having a B team if we are having to include players, Mikey and Stephen, in our UEFA list who have been out injured for some time. Get a couple of young Scots in the squad, even if just for the experience. Or have UEFA got it wrong?

I posted the other day that I thought the Concession price was perfectly reasonable. I certainly DON`T think 32 pounds for under 13s could attract that description. I wonder what the thinking behind that price was?

    aye,

so joe average takes his kids to celtic park and has bought them season tickets,

one kid is 14 now, does he have to buy an adult 3 game package for the european games or does that move into “concession” banding ?

other kid is 6, it costs £96 to take him to 3 games, seriously,

does anyone at the club care about joe average struggles to support the hooops ?

  14. Going into Champions League football with Taylor at left back, and Scales as back up? A LB was a priority signing in the summer window

  15. Just noticed that Scales is in the squad. Nawrocki must have a fairly bad injury. It’s virtually impossible nowadays to find out information on injured players. I assume this is intentional, for some reason. I think we need to have better for the 8 mandatory Scots, in future.

Celtic eyes “significantly” higher earnings than expected

Celtic PLC – Glasgow-based football club – Says earnings for the year ended June 30 will be “significantly higher” than previous expectations, which were formed before the conclusion of the football season and prior to the disposal of certain players. Boasts a strong pitch performance and successful year, generating gains from player trading and winning the domestic treble.

“Player registration valuations and player trading can and often do materially influence Celtic’s financial performance in addition to trading revenue. The summer transfer window is now open and following the closure of the window and the finalisation of the year end balance sheet review, the club will then be in a position to confirm the extent of its improved earnings by publishing its results for the year ended June 30,” the club says.

Not quite. A player has to be out of contract at close of transfer window to allow him to sign for a club after close of window. Termination of a contract AFTER close of window means the player has to wait till next window before signing a contract with a new club.

Totally agree. £32 for under 13 year olds is shocking.

Priced for rich families or a disincentive to take children to CL games.

Do Celtic not realise that under 13 year olds are children with no income Not a good look for a family club.

No consideration whatsoever for the fans of the future.

    HH.

  19. As well as posting on here, maybe we should contact Celtic and ask them the thinking behind the 32 figure for children?

I will and will share any response on here.

I’d say he should retire from international football.

  21. bournesouprecipe on

CL squad looks better, reading from front to back, Brendan will need more than one window and he’ll continue his revamp in January no doubt, because we’ll have the resources no other side has in a comparable league has.

The end of last season and the summer window showed change was necessary and inevitable. He has four windows minimum? to continue the success story, or get emptied.

£138 for Lazio Feyenoord and Athleti seems good value nowadays, and I expect there is a much more formidable challenge waiting domestically and winning nearly every game will be consigned to Ange and Brendan’s first spell.

Looking forward to seeing Bernardo and Palma in Parkhead come the weekend, at least from the bench. Good management by BR getting cover for CB, having already signed two first teamers.

  22. Agree that Calum should be rested in a couple of league games and play that experienced , powerful, defensive midfielder we signed.

Oh wait a minute, I forgot we couldn’t get the signing over the line.

if you feel £138 is fair for a full paying adult, how do you feel about the affordibality to take kids along ?

is an over 13 paying full adult of a concession price ?

is a primary school kid getting charges nearly 1000 pounds for 3 games fair ?

in a few days time we will announce record turnover, profits and cash in bank.

basic accountancy, the fans ponied up in their thousands during covid and got a tv channel and a £50 voucher to spend thier own money.

effectively that season the fans did bank roll the club and they have been cash rich ever since.

personally i think they get an easy ridem their morals would shame the oil and energy companies.

,eanwhile a limited edition real hoops is released, that should help balance the chairmans statement “everyone knows the second hald of a fiscal year brings less revenues”

    lets see,

do they even care ? do fans who can afford to go care about the others who struggle.

    it is just greed ?
