Can we push SPL fan power one step further?

854

Tomorrow’s Annual General Meeting of the Scottish Premier League is set to be the third great football meeting in the last two weeks.  The Prophet of Armageddon, chief executive Neil Doncaster, will face his shareholders and either have to declare he was being truthful when he told them, and Scottish Football League clubs, the SPL would be unable to fulfil their contractual obligations if Sevco were denied a place in the First Division, or that this was a cunning ruse designed to manipulate clubs and fans alike.

Doncaster was surely encouraged by some in the SPL to adopt his confrontational stance but support from SPL clubs was certainly not universal.  No representatives from Celtic participated in any meetings or conversations regarding the contents of the presentation made to SFL clubs, nor was the club informed or consulted on it.

Well done to the Aberdeen fans who kicked off the Sell-out Saturday initiative.  They hope to sell-out Pittodrie for their 11 August game and want to as many fans as possible to buy season tickets.  The idea has been picked up by clubs throughout the league.

I get the feeling that if supporters groups got together we could use this unique moment, when camaraderie among fans coincided with unparalleled fan power over the clubs, to define a framework for the game we wanted, not something a dreamt up by a Norfolk MBA.

Even if we couldn’t get every fan group pulling in the same direction, a few productive bilateral relationships is all it takes to establish an powerful pressure group.

  1. I’m happy to see any Celtic team playing as I miss it big time. I could care less about the result as it’s much more important for our manager to see:

who can make the step up to the first team?

Who from the 1st team hasn’t kept their fitness up? and

Where or if we need to buy/ sell.

Lenny will have a good idea but the early games will help his decision making.

All in all it’s just another brick in the Celtic wall.

If you read my other posts you will see i am in complete agreement with you!

There are posters on here tonight who should be ashamed to call themselves CELTIC SUPPORTERS!

    They are trophy hunting fuds.

Why don’t you give your season ticket, if you possess such a thing, to someone who genuinely supports Celtic.

You are an embarrassment to all things Celtic!

This is very early pre season FFS!

gscbhoy (19:12), indeed. So the 3rd division of the German League is better than the Scottish Reserve League. That proves nothing with regard to the prospects for Celtic’s first team in the coming season.

How different would the outcome have been if we had lined up with the following team and with a couple more weeks training behind them?…

No probs mate, I enjoyed the commentary the guys covered a lot of the history of Celtic our Irish heritage etc etc and also our great rivalry with the deid team who they pointed out several times were re-starting at the very bottom.

Andy Hinkle also bigged Celtic right up…

I’m glad we took Hooper off that team got pretty cluggy over the piece..

IMO , Murphy, Wilson, Paddy (sorry to say) will play no more than 10 games between them for Celtic next season.

The concern is that we now see CL qualifying as the only game in town, no mention of competing at that level. Shame ,but we are miles away from that level and show no ambition to get there.

Sorry, didnt mean to include you in criticism – i got the irony in your comment. I just get pissed off with the constant negativity of some posters on here, regardless of context. If Celtic lost 1-0 to a 3rd division team in a cup game, noone would be more critical than me, but only three or four of the team who played today will be regular starters come the start of the real season

I know we cant laugh at the demise of the team that used to play in the other half of the city forever, but i would have thought that there would still be enough goodwill to lasat longer than just the second friendly of the season!

  21. We are 2 weeks away from the CL qualifier, 2 weeks, and some are saying that it’s about getting fitness.

If that be the case, we may as well give up now.

They should always be 100% fit, anything less is a joke.

I also don’t agree that some are given extra time off in the run up to the CL games, they are needed more now than they ever were, qualify for the group satges and then give them a rest in the spl games.

    yeh

his dad was at Hertha Berlin

i saw his brother Patrik and he many times last season for the youths

both decent players but a bit yet to go

a little too fancy dan, sometimes not clinical enuff

    still young tho, time yet

and in fact Filip has a great shot on him when he feels like it, 25-30yarders

here’s the article of last week on him

(as printed by a certain well known glesga tabloid, surprisingly)

    ___

FILIP TWARDZIK used to sneak out into the centre circle at Celtic Park when the ground was deserted and imagine what it would be like to play there in front of a full house.

Now the Czech-born youngster who was raised in Germany is set to meet his three-year target to reach the top.

Neil Lennon raved about Twardzik’s performance in the friendly against Augsburg in Germany on Tuesday and if a Premier League minus Rangers is like a lottery win on the park for Celtic then Twardzik could be the club’s bonus ball.

That would be a fitting pay-off for the time Filip has dedicated to making it in Scotland after sacrificing family life, and his education, to establish himself in a country where he couldn’t even speak the language.

School lessons were in the form of correspondence courses. Language lessons were faithfully attended every week and Filip’s mother abandoned family life in Germany to help her son and his brother, Celtic youth player Patrick, settle into life in Scotland.

Filip appeared for the second half of the game at Kilmarnock when Celtic won the championship last season.

And the 19-year-old knew he could make it with the Hoops when he set up a goal for Joe Ledley with a cute flick.

He said: “It was a great experience to be part of the team that won the title.

“Providing the assist for Joe Ledley’s goal was brilliant and something I will never forget.

“It was my first competitive game and finally I felt part of everything after setting myself a target of three years to make the first team.

“The manager is very happy with me. If I continue to do well then I should get more games.

“I don’t think about specific matches, like the first Champions League qualifying tie. I’d settle for a few minutes of game time in that tie but it’s up to me to play well in the meantime.

“I’m hoping for two more games on tour in Germany to begin with. I feel ready to play in the first team and I’ll do my best to prove that.”

Twardzik, who was born in Trinec on the Czech border with Slovakia, has gone full circle, having moved to Germany as a child when his father, Rene, signed for Hertha Berlin.

Filip and his twin brother started their careers with Sachsen Leipzig before they were spotted by Celtic’s Chris McCart and brought to Glasgow in 2009.

Versatility has been central to Filip’s progress. His Celtic debut came at full-back but his most influential position could be in midfield while the Czechs use him as a defender at Under-19 level. He said: “I don’t mind where I play. The gaffer wants me to play in midfield or at centre half. I just play wherever he puts me and give it my best shot.

“Players have left in the close season to reduce the size of the squad but that doesn’t change the team too much because others with experience will come in. There’s still a lot of competition.

“We played well against Augsburg, who were a good team from a high standard. But we’ll need to be ready from the first minute of the European game.”

Twardzik’s first experience of Celtic Park was watching an Old Firm derby and the atmosphere captivated him, leading to those centre circle visits that whetted his appetite for the big time.

The irony is it’s uncertain when he will get a chance to play against Rangers but Twardzik’s only focus just now is making further progress.

He said: “My brother and I have been here for three-and-a-half years and I played in the Emirates Cup against Arsenal and Lyon under Gordon Strachan.

“He told me I played well in those games but said he didn’t think I was ready for the first team. Now I’m getting my chance and I hope to take a lot from this experience of being back in Germany.

“I didn’t want to go out on loan at any time because I only wanted to do well at Celtic.

“I wanted to play more last season but things didn’t go my way. Now I’m confident things can improve.

“Someone like James Forrest has been an example to me. He’s an excellent player and when you’re doing well at Celtic you’ll get a chance.

“I always wanted to progress and make it at Parkhead and so did my brother.

“We’re both looking forward to the new season and hoping to get more games. We came in January in 2009 and Celtic have progressed us well.

“We know we can both make it. My mum moved to Scotland with us for the first six months but then she went back home to my dad, who’s now goalkeeping coach at Carl Zeiss Jena in the German Third Division.

“Now we can stand on our own two feet. My brother has been injured and hasn’t had much luck but I think he can turn the corner this season as well.”

The last brothers to make it at Celtic Park were Paul and Willie McStay. If Lennon has landed a similar pair to them then the league everyone knows is already won could have an interesting sideshow to maintain the fans’ interest.

  24. Nice to see the Bhoys playing again. The new kit is not to my liking though.

We played against a team who gave 100% and things were getting a bit ugly towards the end, no injuries at least.

Hope we are up and running before the Inter game 2 CB required along with a Strong, pacy striker. A pacy winger would not go amiss as well.

  30. I’ve watched both under 19 and development squad matches and from what I’ve seen, the under 19s would easily beat the development squad. They can find a player with a ten yard pass and seem to be able to find space a lot easier. I would give them minutes before some of our more illustrious reserves.
