Can we push SPL fan power one step further?

854

Tomorrow’s Annual General Meeting of the Scottish Premier League is set to be the third great football meeting in the last two weeks.  The Prophet of Armageddon, chief executive Neil Doncaster, will face his shareholders and either have to declare he was being truthful when he told them, and Scottish Football League clubs, the SPL would be unable to fulfil their contractual obligations if Sevco were denied a place in the First Division, or that this was a cunning ruse designed to manipulate clubs and fans alike.

Doncaster was surely encouraged by some in the SPL to adopt his confrontational stance but support from SPL clubs was certainly not universal.  No representatives from Celtic participated in any meetings or conversations regarding the contents of the presentation made to SFL clubs, nor was the club informed or consulted on it.

Well done to the Aberdeen fans who kicked off the Sell-out Saturday initiative.  They hope to sell-out Pittodrie for their 11 August game and want to as many fans as possible to buy season tickets.  The idea has been picked up by clubs throughout the league.

I get the feeling that if supporters groups got together we could use this unique moment, when camaraderie among fans coincided with unparalleled fan power over the clubs, to define a framework for the game we wanted, not something a dreamt up by a Norfolk MBA.

Even if we couldn’t get every fan group pulling in the same direction, a few productive bilateral relationships is all it takes to establish an powerful pressure group.

    No…..and no!

I do not for one moment believe that Neil Lennon is the finished article as manager of Celtic.

    He is still learning.

He needs our support at this time or he might as well jack it in.

You decide which camp you are in.

I do not believe lack of fluidity in pre-season friendlies, a common feature in all pre-season outings for all clubs, is mostly a physical thing but it does have a physical component. We see it every year where lesser teams, further on in their training programme beat bigger teams, and we benefit from it when we play teams behind us in their training comeback

A lot of your stamina work will be done then and games are added on to those training-tired legs as a treat and in order to keep up the ball work. We ask a lot of players to get their fitness back and still be as ball-attuned as they were when they are barely seeing a ball in training.

In the macho culture of Scottish Sport, we are just getting over our old habit of over-stretching players because Sports Scientist have pointed out that these methods were leading to inevitable and avoidable injuries. Note how many clubs, including our own see 3 or 4 players miss a half season’s worth of games because of injuries picked up in this period.

On top of this period where you can be light on recent game experience and possibly over-trained, you add the factor of blooding and rotating new players or old players in different positions. On top of that you have more substitutions and less exertion because you do not want players injuring themselves in the final moments of games before their full fitness is established. Instead of the 11 to 14 players playing you will have 16 to 18 fielded all leading to breakdowns in team pattern

I agree that all our players could easily complete a 90 minute game when they return from summer break. I disagree that they can reproduce the same form and intensity over 90 minutes that they reached when they were game fit before the break.

Having said that, you can have good pre-season form and poor form. Today was not a good day but the comments received were, as usual, over the top. Anybody that thinks that today’s performance, without Forster, Mathews, Ledley, Izzaguire, Wanyama, Samaras, Ki & Stokes, gives any pointer as to how poor or good we will be in a CL qualifier in over two weeks time, is just bumping gums.

We will play 4 more friendlies before this qualifying fixture. We will bed in more of our missing big names and then we will be asked to beat a team from Poland, Czech Republic, Finland et al that has a slightly lower ranking than us and a good chance of an upset, regardless of how well we do in the warm up games.

There has been no correlation between our early pre-season form and our later league achievements. It is too early to say Celtic will be good, bad or indifferent.

Its now down to us to rescue Scottish football. I think the club should come out n make its stance. If the sfa want us back in spl. This must be done under no sanctions, a two week delay in the spl beginning. To give us a chance to sign players to make the title interesting, and a full written apology from Regan, to ourselves n every sfl club for the bullying that’s gone on.

We are in a very strong position now. I hope green and ally use this new found power wisely. After all watp.

    As ever well thought out.

I agree with you to a degree, but not on the physical side of things, that should not be a consideration, it should not have lapsed that much that it becomes a factor.

If it is a factor, we should be back weeks earlier to counteract this and be ready for the CL games, and not leave a chance of an upset, tis no rocket science when we are talking 15 mill and more.

I understand that the finess things are missing after a few weeks off, but we are still talking about top class athletes here, who imo should always be in tip top condition.

How much of an upset would it be to lose to Tirasopol of Rumania, Debrecen of Hungary, Maribor of Slovenia, Liberec (Czech), Wroclaw (Poland), Heslinki (Fin), or Limassol (Cyprus)?

In our so called golden past, we have lost in Europe to teams from Hungary (Ujpest), Olympiacos (Greece), Zwickau. (E. Ger.), Krakow (Pol), Innsbruck (Aus), Timisaoara (Rum), Neuchatal (Swi), Zurich (Swi), Artmedia (Slo), Utrecht (Ned) and Sion (Swi cheats).

We have narrowly beat teams from the above list (e.g. 3-2 agg. against Helsinki 11 years ago) and struggled against equivalent compatriot teams. We have no god given right to qualify for CL group stage. Some good teams will be trying to stop us.

I would ask our fans to relax a bit and let the preparation work be done. There is a pro and a con to almost every selection decision the management make e.g. Do you play Murphy in order to attract a transfer fee or do you not play him and risk being stuck with him? Do you play him until your first choice strike partnership are ready or do you blood Watt ahead of schedule?

Using words like disgrace is, IMO, a bit OTT. We got beat in a friendly. If we’d won it would be no more of an indication that we are ready for whatever challenge faces us.

  28. ET, Canamalar etc would appreciate you’re thoughts on my post below, I’m getting pissed off with the eradication of my ST’s Saturday kick offs and ……. Ach read below:

The worry for me is with all the travelling eating into the training/ rest/ training cycle,  some key players won’t be fit enough before our qualifying games for Europe.

As a ST holder who lives outside Scotland I’m pissed that Celtic have rearranged our 2nd home game of the season against DU to travel in between Euro qualifiers in order to play against Madrid.

I believe we should be working on the teams fitness, working out tactics, letting players go, promoting players  etc…….. But no we’re putting the qualification games at risk for a few baubles, and the people who count…… The Celtic support, we have to give up a home Sat game for that extra pennies earned by the club.

I’m not  happy as it’s yet another non Saturday 3pm game off the ST.

Is anybody speaking to our club about back to traditional Sat 3pm KO’s

Give football back to the Fans CSC

  29. philbhoy

i think we all think that we will win league

but the danger is that we settle for this and dont show the ambition to try in cl

if we dont have the quality to qualify for cl then whats point in signing anyone after we are out

  30. canamalar

I agree, but especially this season, when we should romp the league,we are in the fortunate position when we can rest players during the season.

Reaching the CL group stages is vital if we want to progress as a force in europe, and we should have thrown away all the pre concieved ideas and treated this season as an oportunity to give ourselfs an more than even chance of qualifying for the group stages.

From what I can see, we have treated this season the same as we ever did.

I also don’t think the board have backed Lenny re his wants for the playing squad.

We have got rid of a few, and as yet no one in, not counting FF, not the way to do things if you are wanting to reduce the odds for the chance of CL money.

In saying all that, we may well qualify, but it will be against the odds imo.

  31. win, lose or draw it was great to see us in action again.

i’m sure the result will put the first smile on chico ‘n’ jabba’s faces for months. if there are no cracked crests in tomorrow’s wrags the scottish football is definitely finished.

Inverness Caledonian Thistle will add their voice to those calling for the reorganisation of Scottish football.

Club chairman Kenny Cameron said:”We held a highly constructive board meeting today (Sunday) to discuss the current situation.

“We are one of the few clubs with no bank debt whatsoever, so our position is very far from immediately threatening, as has been alleged.

“We look forward to the new season on the back of renewed commitment over the weekend from our major shareholders and sponsors, for which we are very grateful. They fully appreciate that in May we, like other clubs, set our budget for 2012-13 and now there will be real change to the commercial curve because of events outwith our control.

“It is important that our supporters keep making their contribution via season ticket sales. We took their views on board and continue to hold the position that not allowing ‘newco’ Rangers into the SPL is the correct decision.”

He added:”At national level, we are optimistic that the SPL’s sponsors will take due cognisance of the situation in which the SPL finds itself and will stand behind the league.

“Our club has for some time been in favour of an expanded SPL and it is clear now that the reorganisation of Scottish football has to be at the top of the agenda.

“We will be supporting such reorganisation over the coming weeks and months.”
