CAS, Alloa McCoist, your bucket, Mouldy

Celtic box clever again, and the SFA know it.  Aleks Tonev, who has a strong east-European accent and limited English, denies uttering racist comments against Aberdeen.  Did he?  He might well have, for all I know, but, with only one person contradicting Tonev, the SFA have no idea either.

When this issue first raised its head I don’t think anyone on CQN made a character reference for Aleks, but we concluded this issue was destined to remain unresolved, as there is simply not enough information to consider the matter.  The SFA know this and know that the Court of Arbitration for Sport will find in favour of the player if they persist in trying to ban him for 7 games without collaboration.

Don’t let Barry Hearn fool you, it’s the SFA which is unfit for purpose, not the professional clubs or the SPFL.

It was great to see our very own Mouldy67 on the big screens on Wednesday for his Cycling Santa Appeal.  He left London yesterday morning before resting up for the night in Birmingham.  All going to plan, he’ll reach Glasgow on Monday.

Mouldy (Paul) is running to raise funds and awareness for Neuroblastoma Childrens’ Cancer Alliance in memory of Wee Oscar.  It’s an incredible undertaking and a living example of the Celtic spirit brought to life.

You can follow his journey here, if you’re on Twitter, send him a good luck message, I know it will make a difference.  More importantly, you keep tabs on his fundraising here.

I don’t get the notion, apparently widely held and reported by The Scotsman today, that Rangers (sic) cannot afford to sack Alloa McCoist (© Jobo).  He’s on a contract which the club can continue to pay, while promoting Gordon Durie to first-team duties for little or no extra cash.  They may even have a case to curtail their outlays to him.  I can’t see how sacking him costs money in the short term, and let’s face it, that’s all this lot need to worry about.

Knowing where the bodies are buried

Super Alloa has seen the current directors, and all previous regimes right back to Murray, operating up close and personal.  He knows which cupboards have skeletons lurking, while all of them will be aware of his contract negotiations, and what he has, or has not, been prepared to do for the club.  It’s a classic co-dependency situation.  You don’t sack the guy who knows what you don’t want revealed.

There is also the small matter of management priorities.  Would the captain of the Titanic have sacked the chef for a lousy meal after they’d hit an iceberg?

If you’ve not been involved with the Celtic Foundation before there’s a great opportunity coming up next week.  They’re looking for bucketeers ahead of the St Mirren game on Sunday, 14 December, to help raise money for the Christmas Appeal.

One of the beneficiaries of the Christmas Appeal is Glasgow City Mission, who provide emergency accommodation for the homeless, a dedicated Foodbank and an evening drop-in service that feeds those who are impoverished and in need of a proper meal, for, on average, 130 men and women each evening.

Graham Steven of the Mission said, “We are extremely grateful to Celtic FC Foundation and Celtic supporters for their continued generosity.

“Their much-needed financial contributions make the work of Glasgow City Mission possible. In particular, by funding our Older Men’s lunch club, you are providing a safe space for people to come and enjoy lunch and social companionship.

“Loneliness and isolation are significant factors in many of our clients’ lives – you are helping to turn that around, improving lives and strengthening communities – thank you!”

So next week, you can turn up to Celtic Park a wee bit earlier, get to meet hundreds of cheery Celtic fans, get a ticket to the game, and help to feed, shelter and provide companionship for the city’s homeless.

I spent most of the year not doing this kind of work, so I think I need to be there with a bucket next week.  You are cordially invited to pick up your own bucket, email cfcfoundation@celticfc.co.uk or call here 0141 551 4291 now, before you forget about it.  More info here.  We’re lucky to be on the right side of the bucket campaign.

CQN Annual 2015 will be coming off the presses next week, order yours here in time for Christmas.  There’s tons more on CQNBookstore.

    Jobo,

Yes, your body will begin to process the alcohol shortly after you start drinking but will only manage this at a rate of about one unit per hour so when you stop drinking you will have already processed a few units but will still have a high blood alcohol level.

In your example you will still have 6 pints (12 units) in your system at 11:30pm which will take around 12 hours to clear completely or slightly less time to be under the DD limit.

I agree the information we are getting on this is not good. Everyone knows not to drink and drive, very few know when they are safe the next day and are often unintentionally over the limit driving to work.

If you do need to drive the following day home breathalyser kits are available to give some guidance.

Guidettie did have a poor game on Wednesday. However, in my opinion he needs to be played with a striking partner. Give him the service, give him a partner we will see a lot more goals in my opinion.

Ronny bought Scepovic play him with Guidettie and let them get to know each other.

    Keep the Faith!

you can choose from any of today’s 5 SPFL games. You’ve previously chosen Inverness, Celtic and St Johnstone. On the assumption that you wouldn’t want to select Motherwell then this leaves you to choose from the following 6 teams –

    ABERDEEN V HAMILTON

    DUNDEE V inverness

    PARTICK V KILMARNOCK

    ST MIRREN v st johnstone

It’s obvious the club have told the media it would cost them £1.4m to get rid of Coisty and the gang. No one else would have released that information.

Presumably they want the hun hordes to realise that Coisty is shafting them and the much trumpeteted wage cut was not all it seemed.

Good morning CQN from a bright but cold heathrow airport .

Flight due into Glasgow around 12:30 so looks like I might have to head into the city centre to catch the match today .

Hoping we drive another nail into the the Lanarkshire carpet company today

  8. Re the new drink limits- There are a range of electronic breathalysers on EBay (other internet traders are available).

Anyone got experience of them? Are they reliable/accurate for a quick “morning after” check?

At £10 or less it looks like a no-brainer.

  9. I wonder how many huns on “The Journey”

    …………..have been

    breathalysed?

(Some are bound to have taken the car, rocket or indeed “private jet”).

  10. It’s been clear for some time that rozzer scotland need policed as they are out of control. As citizens we should be entitled to make them perform drink and drugs tests whenever they take us aside for random tests. We should be allowed to ensure only responsible people are randomly accosting us to see if they can find something to charge us with.

  11. Morning all.

About 9.20 and still dark. Very cold and very very wet down here. Can’t imagine Motherwell will be much better. Is Fir Park still a quagmire in parts?

Just give us another 3 points, Celtic.

Very glad for Blyth last night. My Dad has fond memories of the place from his army days.

They must have taken their cue from

Derek Johnstone he mentioned this as a reason on superscoreboard last Thursday

  14. Just been to pick up my son from his girlfriend’s. Was stopped at a police checkpoint a mile from home on the way back and I was breathalysed. Haven’t had a drink since pre-game Wednesday so was all good.

    RWE –

You say you are “not aware” of any powers the police have to randomly breath test. That is pretty obvious to me, but the next time you are stopped at a checkpoint and asked to take a breath test, try telling him you are not aware of him having such powers.

I repeat . . . At roadside checkpoints, where the police are randomly stopping multiple drivers, they can demand a breath test and do not need to provide a reason.

Are we to believe that millions of drivers have been randomly breathalysed at police checkpoints all over the UK for decades and not once has a lawyer challenged it in court as being unlawful?

You can keep repeating that you are “not aware” of such powers, but it doesn’t make it so.

Is there not a period of grace for road tax renewals? If it is only a day overdue, aren’t you given time to renew? That certainly used to be the case. Has that changed?

  17. Tom McLaughlin,

The offence now will be failure to renew the road tax, as the discs are things of the past. The offence used to be failure to display which I know to my cost.

I was stopped on 3 or 4 January and actually had the new disc in the glove compartment. I’d paid early but forgotten to swap them over. No dice said PC Plod, a fine is coming your way.

To celebrate and thank Wasps fans for their thunderous backing on one of the most dramatic nights in Scottish football for many a year, tournament sponsors Petrofac will fuel up supporters this weekend with a free pie for all home fans! Aleksandar Tonev: Vincent Lunny backs panel timescale

Former Scottish FA compliance officer Vincent Lunny is not surprised that its tribunal has delayed a decision on the case against Aleksandar Tonev.

The midfielder was found guilty of racially abusing Aberdeen’s Shay Logan, but Celtic have appealed against a seven-match suspension.

“In many ways, it makes perfect sense for the panel to take their time over this one,” Lunny told BBC Scotland.

“It is a very difficult case. It is a very emotive case.”

Vincent Lunny, former SFA compliance officer

“The panel will want time to go away and consider what’s been submitted to them and prepare a judgement that’s well-reasoned and robust and something they’re happy with.”

Whereas in criminal courts, the standard of proof is beyond reasonable doubt, the rule for civil cases in Scotland is a “balance of probabilities” and this is likely where the arguments at Thursday’s tribunal will have centred.

“I understand from the media coverage that Celtic’s arguments were going to be probably based along the lines of the test set down by the panel on the balance of probabilities,” said Lunny.

“And that would, no doubt, involve a fairly complex and sophisticated legal argument.

“So the panel will want time to go away and consider what’s been submitted to them and prepare a judgement that’s well-reasoned and robust and something they’re happy with.

“For something as difficult as this, I am satisfied that the panel is making the right decision by taking their time.”

Aberdeen defender Shay Logan Aberdeen defender Shay Logan made the allegation against Tonev

Lunny pointed out that such an SFA appeals panel would be chaired by “someone legally qualified, such as an advocate or a sheriff or even a judge” and it was commonplace for civil courts to take time to prepare a judgement in writing.

Celtic have hinted that, if that conclusion goes against Tonev, who is on loan from Aston Villa, they could take the matter to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (Cas) in Switzerland.

“It’s not something that’s happened before under the judicial panel system,” added Lunny.

“The protocol itself under the appeals procedure makes it quite clear that the appeal last night was the final stage and there are no further rights of appeal.

“So the SFA might feel that is the end of the matter. However, under the SFA’s Articles of Association, I think Article 5, there is reference to the clubs, as being members of the SFA they do submit to the jurisdiction of Cas.

“So there is an argument on both sides on whether Cas has jurisdiction and it will be interesting to see if Celtic go down that road if it is ultimately necessary.”
