Cautionary tale from Denmark

943

Midtjylland play their second league game of the season away to AaB Aalborg tomorrow evening, hoping to win their first points.  Aab finished seventh last term, so it is a game Midtjylland will feel they have to win to get their domestic campaign on track.

Celtic are free of competitive pressures this weekend, facing West Ham at home tomorrow, where we can give players still working on their fitness an hour, then rest them for the trip to Denmark.

There is plenty of confidence ahead of the second leg against Midtjylland after a solid performance on Tuesday night but the name Aalborg will cause many of us to flinch.  The then Danish champions travelled to Celtic Park in the 2008 Champions League group stage.  It is fair to say they could be the weakest team we faced at that level, but indecisive finishing, for some of the game against 10 men, and a missed Barry Robson penalty, meant the game finished 0-0.

Celtic bossed the return leg at Aab’s tiny stadium and Robson atoned for his penalty miss by giving the visitors a second half lead.

Here’s the thing about football.  You can think you are safe, then a deflected shot flies in from nowhere and a deflected cross hits a defender and allows a semi-professional outfit to beat Celtic to the Uefa Cup spot.

I hope we use every moment of our preparatory time tomorrow wisely.  Nothing can be taken for granted.

  4. CELTIC40ME @ 4:15 PM,

Well I’m not sure it’s that set in stone and of course Celtic Plc don’t follow best practice.

Has anyone said how many Trophies Ian McLeod and Allan Macdonald won between them – of course not. How many fholk attributed the 2004 double to Peter Lawwell at the time? It’s a made up thing for Big Pedro with made up numbers,

Brian Quinn was a significant figure as Celtic Chairmen before Peter Lawwell was “headhunted”.

Now of course there seems to have been a gradual change over a few seasons when Peter Lawwell went from Executive Operations Director to CEO proper, the transition being complete by the time Brian Quinn left.

Big Pedro should be a reminder there is a reason that best practice is in place in the Boardroom and no one in Celtic should have that much power again.

    Hail Hail

  5. CELTIC40ME @ 4:31 PM,

Quite, not over-subscribed as you said, fully-subscribed because of DD underwriting the issue

No, that’s not the case, it was indeed oversubscribed with supporters missing out on some shares…

Peter Lawwell said: “The response from investors has been outstanding and I’m delighted to say that the share issue was substantially oversubscribed. This is a measure of the faith investors and fans have shown in our strategy for the future of the club.

“Indeed, the demand for shares has outstripped supply and it’s inevitable that some applicants, who are not existing shareholders, will not receive the full amount they applied for.

“But I’m delighted that all 1,000 applicants who requested shares of below £5,000 will receive their allocations in full.”

    CELTIC40ME @ 4:15 PM,

“Well I’m not sure it’s that set in stone and of course Celtic Plc don’t follow best practice.”

In corporate governance terms of course it is, a non-exec director should 100% not be doing the job of an exec. It’s basic stuff, you don’t appoint a chief exec and then have a non-exec do the job.

You’re suggesting that we didn’t follow best practice, with the chairman doing the chief execs job, part-time while being paid a nominal directors wage, but the chairman should be given all the credit for the success. Right?

A far more likely scenario is that Celtic operated like any other well-run company (which it appears you are suggesting we were then) with a properly functioning board with each member doing what they were tasked with under company law.

  12. MM in the summer of 1965 there was a photie of Jim McCalliog holding the newly won Scottish Cup on a visit tae Parkheid, I was convinced then we would be signing him.

As for the supporters berating the Big Mhan, couldnae have been any Jungle Tim’s around as they would have had their heid in their hauns.

  13. CHAIRBHOY on 23RD JULY 2021 5:01 PM

    Thanks.

“No, that’s not the case, it was indeed oversubscribed with supporters missing out on some shares…”

Not necessarily supporters. Applicants who were not previously shareholders and applied for more than £5000 of shares received only some of their application. And everyone who applied for under £5000 of shares received them all

What are some of the ways that Exec and Non-Execs are treated differently under company law? What are their different tasks?

  15. Bournesouprecipe

Have to disagree that there were no dissenting voices between the appointment in the showers and the first lockdown. Cluj came only a couple of months after “Hampden in The Showers” and our manager was heavily criticised for his team selection, tactics and lack of game management after we had put ourselves in a qualifying position 3 times on the night but still failed to progress. I was one of many on here who were not happy with Lawell’s handling of matters.

  16. A narrative now being spotted is …………

Alfie will sell for more than Eddie , because of how Rangers (sic) are better than Celtic.

  17. because allegedly Brighton have a bid on the table for Eddie at £22,5m, (i know feckin brighton)

  18. A paid employee Director is an executive who should act in the best interest of the company while performing the tasks to make the company work, and reporting to a board of directors.

The NED is meant to be the eyes on the Execs to make sure they are.

  19. Tontine Tim,,

I grew up sitting on the wall at the back of what my Dad always called the Hayshed. I still think of it as that. Was the Jungle (and my Dad served in the Jungles of India and Malaya during the war) always called that or was it ever the Hayshed?

  20. SAINT STIVS on 23RD JULY 2021 1:51 PM

Having been at Hampden and news broke that Neil was appointed, no one around me stop celibrating, it was kinda just accpeted that it had to be.

Maybe I dreamt “the one neil lennon” chant going round the ground.

Maybe I dreamt the green brigade celebrations in the ASDA car park.

I tell ye, nothing sound more “self entitled” than feeling down about the manager who has just delivered a trophy and a treble. How bizzare.

How was your day out at disney ? Great day out but kinda spoiled cos I never got on Its A Small World

    …………………….

Many Celtic supporters don’t suffer from myopia. They have a long term view of things. It is quite normal to be deliriously happy that your team has just won the cup but to be unhappy because Neil Lennon was appointed manager after we seen what Brendan Rodgers had to offer and knowing that Leicester had paid Celtic enough compensation for us to appoint a proper Head Coach.

:) that reads like a question from an economics exam

I think it’s been answered several times already, and if not it’s easily googled 👍

  22. Go tell the Spartim on

PL and NFL are yesterday’s men, thankfully from my perspective. Whilst it’s beneficial to know your history, it serves little unless we learn from it.

Odsonne is twice the player Morelos is and half the width

  23. Hayshed — something to do with agriculturally styled / sourced barrel vault roof?

Not sure when the name changed to the Jungle — mid 50’s?

The Jungle — similar scale but more straight line / angular roof profile.

Not sure the history of the terrace roofs at CP.

All were in place by 70/71 although the CE was rebuilt / extended in 86/87?

The board managed to get a poll in the CV to back up their plan for a new roof rather than new stand with seating — finger on the pulse PLC.

RE — built in the early 60s or the late 60s?

CE — originally done in the 50’s?

Hopefully there are some historians about — those who do not like golf.
