Celtic 1-0 Hearts

Victor Wanyama scored the only goal of this game after 72 minutes, a postage stamp corner cracker from outside the box, but the 90th minute created most drama as Fraser Forster saved an Eggert Jonsson penalty to secure the points.

Celtic were forced into yet more injury changes as third choice right back, Cha Du-Ri, was drafted in, in the absence of Adam Matthews and long-term absentee, Mark Wilson.  With Emilio Izaguirre and Joe Ledley both close to returning to action Charlie Mulgrew played left back, giving Celtic a physical looking formation but they struggled to impose themselves in the opening 30 minutes.

Gary Hooper and Anthony Stokes offered little up front all day but Hooper had two gilt-edged chances before the break.  James Forrest hooked an awkward cross in from the right which the Hearts defence failed to deal with, allowing Hooper to  shoot from inside the six yard box but he tame effort missed the target.  Minutes later Hooper was again presented with a chance inside the box after Georgios Samaras hit the goal-line on the left but the striker failed to get his feet in gear.

Anthony Stokes connected well with a shot from 25 yards which tested Kello, the only real effort either keeper had to deal with in the first half.  Stokes came close again after the break but he couldn’t quite get high enough to above James Forrest’s cross and his header rebounded off the bar.

Charlie Mulgrew struggled with his delivery from free kicks and corners all afternoon but the ball broke to Victor Wanyama on 23 yards out after one Mulgrew free kick.  The Kenyan brought his foot from right to left across the ball, injecting a devilish degree of swerve to leave Kello rooted to the spot as the ball flew into the net.

With the clock running down Fraser Forster failed to deal with a corner and Wanyama was penalised in the resulting melee inside the box resulting in the penalty.  With Jonsson ready to take the kick Georgios Samaras stood over the ball insisting it was not correctly on the spot, taking a clear opportunity to unnerve the kicker.  Jonsson refused to re-spot the ball until the referee moved it clearly away from its initial position and insisted it was placed again.

When Jonsson eventually took his kick he struck it well enough but Fraser Forster dived quickly to his left and turned the ball behind.  The winning run continues.

Does anyone know what the winning number of the half-time draw was? still have my scrumpled up coupon.

If you win im now legally entitled to £7500.

  2. Who is this Ian McColl who was demanding Sammi should have been booked for pointing out that the ball wasn’t on the spot? I take it the raging rags will have him in their sights, given his form lately. They hate us and they don’t even try and hide it now. Please, Celtic supporters, stop feeding them. Celtic itself should simply stop having any dealings with them. We are not going to influence them and their money is no compensation. Let them rot.

  3. Wanyama, Kayal, Brown, Ledley, McCourt, Ki, Forrest, Commons, Samaras, McGeouch. On loan Juarez & McGinn.

How do we keep all these guys happy. We can’t. Possibly a few for the exit door in January?

Can’t see Juarez or McGinn replacing anyone in the team so I’m assuming they will go at the first opportunity.

With the emergence of Wanyama i think we will take the cash for either kayal or Ki if a high bid comes in.

We should build our team around Victor Wanyama, he is The Bhoy!!

“This kicking the ball out thing has got rather silly over the years. In my view it is open to abuse and lets the referee off the hook too often.”

This has annoyed me for years.

Contested stoat-ups should be the norm.

nerves still recovering …thought sammi handled the spot issue well and helped get us the full 3 points..good to see Fraser pick up on that and force the ref to move the ball. How good was that so he is part of the timewasting too… if it ever comes to that

Whilst I agree re. Wanyama, at the end of last season most celtic supporters were saying that Kayal is a must keep and the team should be built around him.

One of our midfielders will be sold in January, as will one of our numberous centre halfs and right backs as well as one of our strikers if Lenny gets his wish of bringing in a centre half and striker.

We have too many players and need to trim the squad in order to start giving some of our promising youngsters game time.

  8. Victor Wanyama admits he did not know how to celebrate his first goal for Celtic which was enough to beat Hearts at Parkhead and take the Hoops to within four points of Clydesdale Bank Premier League leaders Rangers.

The Kenya international, 20, signed from Belgian side Beerschot AC in the summer, started the game in midfield before returning to defence for the start of the second half and came forward to break the deadlock in the 72nd minute when he drove high past Gorgie keeper Marian Kello from outside the box.

Wanyama, though, did have Fraser Forster to thank for the win after the Hoops keeper saved a penalty from Jambos midfielder Eggert Jonsson which was awarded against the African for handball with two minutes remaining.

“It was my first Celtic goal and I was really happy to score it in front of my own fans,” said Wanyama.

“It was the best goal of my career. I can’t describe how I felt, it was a very good moment.

“It was very difficult (to celebrate) because I didn’t know what to do.

“It was a good strike, I hit it really hard and my eyes were on the ball.

“I didn’t know the ball was going to go in, I just saw it in the net. I am happy.”

Wanyama claims he was unaware referee Calum Murray had given the penalty against him.

“I didn’t know he awarded the penalty against me because I didn’t feel that I touched the ball with my hand,” he said.

“I will need to see it again. I jumped with my head and I don’t know if I touched it with my hand. It was a bad moment.

“Fraser saved the penalty so I was happy for him. I spoke to him and I am happy he helped us to take three points.”

    No.

Ian McCall former manager Thistle and Queen of South.

I expect that he will look at the video and realise that he has been mistaken to condemn Sammi. An apology will be forthcoming on Clyde Scoreboard at the first opportunity.

Make no mistake these Huns are hurting bad because they are no longer allowed to get away with striking opponents off the ball or acts of simulation without action being taken against them.

The sense of outrage over fair and proper punishments for two of their players this season has been incredible. They simply can’t handle it.

On the telly yesterday, Hateley was demanding action against the Hibs player for his gesture at the goading Huns and made it clear that his opinion was shaped by his old team getting done by TV evidence rather than the incident alone. Burley agreed Aluko had dived but then questioned the validity of those who made the decision. And the Sleekit Apprentice Boy appears to think that because they have already had one player punished they should get a pass on the next incident – logic obtained through many past experiences no doubt.

The referee was conned by Aluko last week and retrospective punishment is there to deal with such incidents. The referee’s position when he awarded the penalty is totally irrelevant – but half-wits in the Scottish media appear to think that is important.

Of course we still have to deal with poor officials every week – some of them are simply rank-rotten rather that bias … but as we all know others have their agenda and will always tried to get first shot on the goat.

  14. Vmhan & Kayal33

Personally i would like to keep both Kayal & Ki but money talks as they say. If i had to choose which one to sell it would be Ki as he is not starting at the moment.

Selling one would allow us to strengthen in other areas. We are lucky that we have so many good midfielders.

Getting Forrest & McGeough on long term contracts should be a priority.

  15. Vmhan

Not sure what the situation is with Commons, Going into the 1st game of the season he would have been my 1st name on the team sheet.

I hope he gets back to form, I don’t want to see him leave anytime soon.

I cant for the life of me think what more fat Sally could have wanted from Jim McCluskey whenever he refereed in hun games.

Steel blades in place of studs perhaps

I think that flippant comment goes much deeper into the physqie of a hun mindset.

Serge. I believe we could sell both Kayal and Ki if the money is right and that would allow is to bring in a striker a centre back and a ball playing midfielder.I also feel that we may well sell Commons back to an English championship side.If we were to sell a striker who would we be likely to sell? H.H.

Watched El Classico last night, but just noticed something there on the highlights. All the Barca players look shocked and stunned at Madrid’s early goal, apart from one.

Puyol immediately started motivating his team mates, urging them to get to the centre circle ready for the kick off. They lost a daft goal – deal with it and move on!

What a player and captain Carlos Puyol has been. Would have loved to see him in the Hoops.

Kayal has been a huge disappointment this season, with his head seemingly all over the place with contract talks and rumours of moves to the EPL. Last season he made the same impact that Vic is making this season and I was looking forward to seeing him develop into the complete midfielder this year.

I can’t believe I’m writing this, but any more displays like the first half yesterday, then I won’t be too upset if he leaves for decent money.

Murphy & Rasmussen? haha. I would love to see us sell all loan players & squad players to be honest but is not easy.

Like the Midfield it’s impossible to keep all the Strikers happy so if i was on the spot and had to say one i would say sell Stokes, Not because He is a bad player it’s just that I rate Hooper very highly and would like to see him play with someone who will work their socks off for 90 minutes.

I want to see Everyone in a Celtic shirt put in a shift over 90 mins. Fighting for each other on every area of the pitch.

  26. I don’t think Beram has shown enough consistency this season to be the subject of a big money move, he has all the attributes to be a player and I really hope that it’s with us, I don’t think Lenny will be too keen on selling many of his young Lions.

Looking at some of the headlines over the last few days about the reluctance of the SPL and SFA to intervene of behalf of Hearts players – the thought occurs to me that maybe Scotlands authorities are quietly kacking themselves that any intervention and resultant penalties imposed on Hearts might set a precedent for the situation at Ibrox?
