Celtic 1-0 Hearts

710

Victor Wanyama scored the only goal of this game after 72 minutes, a postage stamp corner cracker from outside the box, but the 90th minute created most drama as Fraser Forster saved an Eggert Jonsson penalty to secure the points.

Celtic were forced into yet more injury changes as third choice right back, Cha Du-Ri, was drafted in, in the absence of Adam Matthews and long-term absentee, Mark Wilson.  With Emilio Izaguirre and Joe Ledley both close to returning to action Charlie Mulgrew played left back, giving Celtic a physical looking formation but they struggled to impose themselves in the opening 30 minutes.

Gary Hooper and Anthony Stokes offered little up front all day but Hooper had two gilt-edged chances before the break.  James Forrest hooked an awkward cross in from the right which the Hearts defence failed to deal with, allowing Hooper to  shoot from inside the six yard box but he tame effort missed the target.  Minutes later Hooper was again presented with a chance inside the box after Georgios Samaras hit the goal-line on the left but the striker failed to get his feet in gear.

Anthony Stokes connected well with a shot from 25 yards which tested Kello, the only real effort either keeper had to deal with in the first half.  Stokes came close again after the break but he couldn’t quite get high enough to above James Forrest’s cross and his header rebounded off the bar.

Charlie Mulgrew struggled with his delivery from free kicks and corners all afternoon but the ball broke to Victor Wanyama on 23 yards out after one Mulgrew free kick.  The Kenyan brought his foot from right to left across the ball, injecting a devilish degree of swerve to leave Kello rooted to the spot as the ball flew into the net.

With the clock running down Fraser Forster failed to deal with a corner and Wanyama was penalised in the resulting melee inside the box resulting in the penalty.  With Jonsson ready to take the kick Georgios Samaras stood over the ball insisting it was not correctly on the spot, taking a clear opportunity to unnerve the kicker.  Jonsson refused to re-spot the ball until the referee moved it clearly away from its initial position and insisted it was placed again.

When Jonsson eventually took his kick he struck it well enough but Fraser Forster dived quickly to his left and turned the ball behind.  The winning run continues.

  1. Big Nan- Indeed, if a young referee is looking for career advancement then he has to be very wary of whose toes he stands on, and one way to find yourself sliding down the greasy pole is to award too many marginal decisions against Rangers and give blatantly bad decisions for Celtic.

It is a mentality, a culture, a mindset within those who are trying to find favour with their superiors and it is a culture that will never be eradicated, that is why the only solution is using match officials from outside Scotland.

I know, mate. It’s natural to look for reassurance in a case like this. Uncomfortable to think that such a thing could just happen to you without your bringing it about in some way.

    Hail Hail!

  4. Just a wee point about Hearts not returning the ball after an injury. Previous to that Anthony Stokes had put the ball out for a throw in to Hearts near their corner flag when he could have passed the ball to the Hearts goalie or put it out for a goal kick.

    Karma Anthony!

I hear David “Rain-jurss” Tanner was extremely upset when big Fraser saved the penalty yesterday.

Another lovely piece of Karma goes to the Bhoy in the front main stand who threw the ball behind Hamill after he was rushing towards him to get the ball. Very sweet.

  8. Jhilday if you don’t get a reply from the email you sent, come back onto the blog as someone on here will have a contact at CP who can purue this on youre behalf, I said “you’re” but in fact its in all our interests to get this loony identified.

I had the same problem with my card yesterday on entering 111 and told a steward that my ST or turnstile was faulty, all this while a line of supporters was forming behind me, a steward on the outside came over and scanned the card then it worked perfectly (apparently there was a fault in the turnstile), no hassle from other supporters and the stewards were professional and switched on to the problem, thats what should have happened in you’re case….. minus the loony!

Get him identified and kicked out of CP.

  9. Can anyone advise me how much an subscription is for CelticTV outside the UK? Official website is officially rubbish with the info here! Thinking of buying as a Christmas gift for someone. As i’m in Scotland it will only quote me for a UK only subscription. Get the finger out Celtic, sell them as gift cards, would sell 1000s more i’m sure!

Anyway, help CQNers of far away lands!

Good Morning to the Celtic family from a showery Central Scotland. I believe over a season in order to win a Championship there will be times when you have to grind out a result and yesterday was one of those days. I particularly enjoyed watching big Victor 67 and he is fast becoming a faveroute of mine what a player and only youngster.I noticed an article this morning saying liverpool are lineing up a 15 Million pound double bid for old firm players the players being Kayal and Jelavic and I dont think Rangers can afford to turn down 3 Million for there striker.I would have been concerned at the start of the season if Kayal had been sold but not so much now as I believe we have plenty of mid field options.Sometimes as Celtic fans we do not realise Broonies worth our team were getting bullied by Hearts and were to nice to give a bit back Lennie brought on Broonie and immediately he started giving them some back and snarling in there facesand they could dish it out but couldnt take it lets remember to not underate our skipper.H.H.

crucial 3 points yesterday to keep the pressure on Sally and his cheats .

IMO that pen decision would never have been given at Ibrokes .

Well done to big Sammi for spotting the incorrect placing of the ball for the pen .Loved beating those imposter’s from Gorgie doubt they will show that level of commitment in the coming weeks .

keep up the good work Celtic

    hail hail

  15. Great 3 points yesterday, always great to beat that shower and even better to overcome the ridiculous penalty decision.

There is some debate on whether we should stick to the competency of the Mib’s, or tell it like it is.

My point is that no matter how we as fans tackle this subject, the bottom line is that Mib’s with hun leanings will always try to screw us and enjoy doing so.

It is the club that has the power to tackle these outragious decisions which favour der hun and punish us at every twist and turn. As for the so called sports media the less said the better.

I used to get wound up by rants from huns like Ian Mc Call as according to him it is outrageous for Sammi to point out that the ball was not on the spot and he should have been booked for doing so. I also used to be more angry at the uncle tims.

I now however just laugh at them all. As one set is obviously hurting and the other has sold their souls for money to buy the soup.

The bottom line is this, as long as true Celtic people stand up and fight all the injustice, then we will prevail and prosper. The thing to remember is that our forefathers and mothers had to fight even harder to establish this wonderful club and live in this country.

They have passed the torch to us. We must and will not drop or lose lose that flame.

  25. This kicking the ball out thing has got rather silly over the years. In my view it is open to abuse and lets the referee off the hook too often.

If a player has a head knock or seems badly injured the ref should stop the game. That’s his job, not the players’.

Now if a player kicks the ball out to allow an opponent to get treatment that’s sporting play and the ball should be returned in a similar position. But if he puts the ball out to allow one of his own to be treated he is gaining an advantage. Should he get the ball back too? This is open to abuse, particularly near the end of the game.

If I were a manager I would tell my players not to kick the ball out to allow an opponent treatment. Leave it to the ref to make the decision.
