Celtic 5-0 St Mirren

1271

Celtic swept St Mirren aside this afternoon as a hat-trick from Gary Hooper and goals from Georgios Samaras and Dylan McGeough

Celtic came roaring out of the traps and blew St Mirren away this afternoon.  Georgios Samaras got the show underway on 4 minutes when he collected the ball after Marc McAusland failed to make a clean connection on the ball.  Samaras still had a lot to do and carried the ball into the box.  With defenders closing in from all around the Greek striker placed his shot instead of going for power.  St Mirren keeper, Craig Samson got a hand to the shot but the ball spun slowly towards goal and settled 8” over the line.

Four minutes later, a clearly confident Samaras drove into the St Mirren penalty box before cutting the ball left for Anthony Stokes, who’s fired cross was turned over the line from 3 yards by Gary Hooper.

Samaras was running the show but was hampered by a knock to the ankle which he took a few moments to recover from.  This coincided with St Mirren’s best period of play as the visitors gained more possession and territorial advantage in the period before half time.

Celtic started the second half just as brightly as they did the first as Hooper and Kayal could both have added to the score, however, the third would arrive 8 minutes into the second half.  Victor Wanyama played an excellent forward pass to Stokes who hit the goal line before cutting back for Gary Hooper.  Hooper collected with his back to goal but spun and shot in a sweeping move that left Samson with no chance.

Hooper completed his hat-trick on 57 minutes when he tried to play a one-two with Stokes but the ball was returned by a defender, allowing him to chip the on-rushing Samson.

18-year-old Dylan McGeough made his first impact as a Celtic player minutes after replacing James Forrest when he collected the ball 10 yards in front of his own box, ran 70 yards into the St Mirren box, before creating space and despatching Celtic’s fifth goal.  An unforgettable moment for the young player.

You are right. I was at Scotland game when they dropped Dalglish to avoid him beating George Young record of .34 consecutive caps.

He was back for the next match.

We offend them more than our songs.

  3. re the caps thing:

I always find it such a strange and curious thing that during the decade from 1965, Scotland had three or four club sides that could confidently take to the field against any team from any other country in Europe; the National team was a bit of a joke at times.

Off the top of my head 95% or more of the players in those teams were Scottish and there were other players of the stature of Bremner etc playing their trade elsewhere; the National team were still a bit of a joke.

Scotland had a club side that twice reached the pinnacle of the club game in Europe, earning plaudits from everyone who were to bear witness to the skills shown from two marginally different sides, both fully comprising all Scottish personnel; and still the National team struggled to achieve anything further than joke status.

Here’s to the Scotland teams that never were and indeed never could be (raises a glass):

Simpson, Craig, McNeill, Clark, Gemmell, Murdoch, Auld, Johnstone, Wallace, Chalmers, Lennox

Williams, Hay, Gemmell, Murdoch, McNeill, Brogan, Johnstone, Hughes, Wallace, Auld, Lennox and of course: Connelly

  4. Maybe my paranoia antennae is twitching too much, also on BBC SPL website, the links to the managers interviews after todays game-

    “Thrilled with whole team”- Lennon

    “Defeat hurts”- Danny Lennon

Only one of the managers has a christian name?

young Rory Donnelly – has a very good shout at making it, very promising. the reds have turned down a 50k bid for him, they want more.

Celtic class? he would be worth a punt

    **************************************

They turned down 110k from Burnley Kev. Come back with a serious offer and they’ll be taken seriously. 3 other Championship clubs after him atm, so in no hurry to acccept the 1st one that comes along. Rory had a quiet day against Glentoran in a 2-1 win for us, as for Celtic class? Well, he’s a cracking player, certainly better than Liam Boyce who went to Werder Breham last January but he wouldn’t get a game at Celtic atm.

    Re the caps thing,

I remember my old man telling me that after the Lisbon victory a few journos muted a wholesale transfer of the team for Scotland similar to the Honved team who represented Hungary in the 50’s, did’nt catch on though!! surprise surprise

Thanks. But I didn’t go today. I think SwanseaBhoy is the deserved recipient of the highlights.

I baked bread and listened to the audio stream on Celtic TV. Why anyone listens to Radio Scotland is beyond me.

  12. i watched the game today on screen , how could anyone pick a man of the match.

a big hail hail not only to all the celtic family, (note family, not fans).

for braving the weather in such numbers, but for the standing ovation for big sammy when his shift was done.

this can only help with his confidence, i feel he is a confidence type of player.

keep the faith lhads, keep the faith.

that rumour about Burnley was said not to be true in the Irish News mate – if it was 110k C’Ville would have taken their arms off for that

Boyce is a good irish League player – young Rory will make it in the full time game

we have a kid in Joe Gormley waiting to replace Donnelly – not a great team player/footballer but a natural goalscorer

My second cousin had it, and he described the playin of them as like tried to get a kiss out of a greased up pig.

They’re (funny how they referred to in the plural) probably my favourite instrument tho, closely followed by the fiddle and… strangely… the cello

They sound like seagulls without the annoyin bits.

The GB are part of the Celtic support at CP

and i don’t think they should be referred to as if

    they were a seperate entity.

All for one and one for all.

    ——–

Agreed. But without the GB there would be no blood connecting the supports brain to its heart and we’d all be sitting on our hands keeping our backsides warm.

  19. Paul67 ,

a big thank you for your shout out today and for all the support we received for the Sponsored Leg Wax tonight in the CSA on London Rd. We had an enthusiastic crowd in , following a tremendous performance by the bhoys and they lent a moral boost to all the participants .

A big thank you to Liffey , Cutter , Trinder and Griffin from CM and CQN will be proud to know that I didn’t let you down . Not a whimper , not a squeal emerged from these lips .

Thank you to all who supported/sponsored us . We really couldn’t do it without you. We are a couple of games away from our 1000th kid at celtic games and that , more than anything else , fills us with pride in belonging to The Celtic Family.

Hail Hail and thank you again.

    Sannabhoy

PS. I’m considering posting a video but not sure if the younger readers should be exposed ! Thoughts ?

I know for a fact that it’s true and that it’s been rejected. We don’t need to sell him, we’ve settled our outstanding bills so we don’t need the money at the minute. I’d much rather keep him and push on for the league and cup come January, and as for Boyce if he comes back then happy days but as you’ve pointed out there is a queue in which he’ll have to take his place atm. He’s currently training with the Reds atm anyway, so bar him signing for Killie or indeed Hibs now then he’ll come back to us when the window opens.

Joe Gormley while a lovely fella and a goal scorer at amateur lever ( 60 goals last season ) still has a lot to do to make in the IL.

The GB were born of Celtic supporters as

were us who stood in the jungle and the Celtic end.

I agree before the GB the atmosphere at CP could at times

    be flat.

But i also recall the support getting behind the team when required.

The GB are part of us.
