Celtic 5-0 St Mirren

1271

Celtic swept St Mirren aside this afternoon as a hat-trick from Gary Hooper and goals from Georgios Samaras and Dylan McGeough

Celtic came roaring out of the traps and blew St Mirren away this afternoon.  Georgios Samaras got the show underway on 4 minutes when he collected the ball after Marc McAusland failed to make a clean connection on the ball.  Samaras still had a lot to do and carried the ball into the box.  With defenders closing in from all around the Greek striker placed his shot instead of going for power.  St Mirren keeper, Craig Samson got a hand to the shot but the ball spun slowly towards goal and settled 8” over the line.

Four minutes later, a clearly confident Samaras drove into the St Mirren penalty box before cutting the ball left for Anthony Stokes, who’s fired cross was turned over the line from 3 yards by Gary Hooper.

Samaras was running the show but was hampered by a knock to the ankle which he took a few moments to recover from.  This coincided with St Mirren’s best period of play as the visitors gained more possession and territorial advantage in the period before half time.

Celtic started the second half just as brightly as they did the first as Hooper and Kayal could both have added to the score, however, the third would arrive 8 minutes into the second half.  Victor Wanyama played an excellent forward pass to Stokes who hit the goal line before cutting back for Gary Hooper.  Hooper collected with his back to goal but spun and shot in a sweeping move that left Samson with no chance.

Hooper completed his hat-trick on 57 minutes when he tried to play a one-two with Stokes but the ball was returned by a defender, allowing him to chip the on-rushing Samson.

18-year-old Dylan McGeough made his first impact as a Celtic player minutes after replacing James Forrest when he collected the ball 10 yards in front of his own box, ran 70 yards into the St Mirren box, before creating space and despatching Celtic’s fifth goal.  An unforgettable moment for the young player.

  1. Had a brilliant day amongst the Bhoys in the Jock Stein stand today. The spontantity of the Huddle around the Park was a joy to behold. Much singing and chanting from all, being chorused by the wonderful Green Brigade.

And I nearly forgot, we humped them 5 nil! It could have been 10!

Feeling very good just now. I think the malt is maintaining the high.

no bother mate i beleive you – was just saying in the Irish news the bid of 100k was laughed off as not happening

i agree with you too, that we do need him for a push at the gibson cup and maybe at last thon Irish f’in Cup thing!!

as i said about Joe, great goalscorer just not a great footballer at the moment

  4. Madrid in 66 had 202 caps between them; Partizan 240.

The Inter Milan team we wrecked in 67 had 320 caps for Italy between them (by the end of their careers); Celtic had 117.

The Man U team in 68 had 247; Benfica had 327 (for 10 players, can’t find data for Humberto Fernandes)

Milan in 69 had 236; Ajax had about 100 more (over 330 caps)

Feyenoord in 70 had 340 caps; Celtic had 143.

Of the 8 non-Celtic teams to play in those 5 finals, half had more than the combined totals of the two Celtic sides (taken as overall) and all had 8 had more caps than the combined total caps won by Celtic players (McNeill, Gemmell etc not counted twice).

    Astonishing. Not.

  5. MWD and other interested folk…

Here is my response to the Beeb in relation to the latest round of the cup final complaints:

    Dear Ms Tristram,

Many thanks for your e-mail correspondence and the attachments.

Whilst I am unable to comment on behalf of other complainants, the document summarising responses to the letters of the 9th and 10th November appear to fairly represent the majority of the points I had raised.

I also note that the wide range of responses this document summarises have one important commonality; they are all restricted to a commentary, as invited, on the “factual accuracy and completeness” (your mail of 10th November) of Ms O’Brien’s report to the Committee (ESC (11) 147).

Unfortunately, this cannot be said of the document entitled ‘BBC Scotland Response’. In part A. Background Notes, point 2 BBC Scotland inaccurately attribute complainants as claiming that neither “Celtic FC nor its fans have ever been subject to investigation over terracing songs or chants”. The complainants had actually noted that, unlike Rangers FC, Celtic and its supporters had never been subject to censure for “sectarian singing” (see Point 17 of ESC (11) 147). It seems even in its responses to Ms O’Brien’s report BBC Scotland cannot resist the temptation to obfuscate matters.

Furthermore, and more worryingly, BBC Scotland then proceed to introduce a whole swathe of issues in points 2 and 4 and appendices A, B, C, E, F and G which post-date the broadcast in question, cannot have had any impact on the decision-making at that time and therefore are not relevant to the issue at hand. Frankly, even had Celtic FC been censured for sectarian singing by its supporters since the Cup Final broadcast, which of course it has not, that would not render use of the phrase “Celtic supporters have been singing some sectarian songs” as fair and accurate at the time of the broadcast. The references to a subsequent UEFA investigation into “illicit chanting” and a similar investigation by the SPL into Celtic supporters are additionally irrelevant since neither concern “sectarian singing”; indeed it is surely a tacit admission of its previous inaccuracy that BBC Scotland has been so careful to describe these events in terms other than “sectarian”.

In point 4 BBC Scotland make the claim that “the addition of the phrase ‘Provisional Wing’ after the line “I joined the IRA’ is a regular add-on to the song as sung on the terracings, rather than something that is “sometimes” added”. No evidence whatever is provided to support this claim.

The article by Joan McAlpine also referenced in point 4 is written after the broadcast was made and simply establishes that one Scottish MSP believes the distinction between political and sectarian singing is “disingenuous”. In the same article Ms McAlpine acknowledges that “The Boys of the Old Brigade was played this year when the Queen visited Dublin” and that, from the loyalist tradition “An old favourite such as The Sash is a celebration of religious and political identity which does not advocate attacking Catholics”. For Ms McAlpine the difficulties arising from the singing of what she confirms are “folk songs” is “one of context”. Since “Rugby fans don’t attack each other after singing the Flower of Scotland” she advocates that “different rules (should) apply to different situations”. Whatever one might think of Ms McAlpine’s views, they do not support a contention that The Boys of the Old Brigade is a sectarian song.

Similarly, the views of Peter Lawwell, Neil Lennon and Paul McBride additionally referenced in point 4 are equally subsequent to, and of no relevance to the broadcast and the nature of the complaints. They all refer to these individual’s views on the singing of songs or chants by Celtic supporters with references to the IRA. None of the individuals concerned makes reference to these or any other songs or chants by Celtic supporters as being “sectarian” in nature.

Alongside many Celtic supporters, I recognise that there is a legitimate debate about the singing of political songs at a football match but that is a wholly unrelated matter. McClean’s comment was inaccurate and unfair. It cannot be made otherwise by referencing the views of people who feel political songs should not be sung by Celtic supporters. Again, the fact that BBC Scotland seem to believe that these views somehow mean it can merely emphasises the problem. BBC Scotland might dislike the song The Boys of the Old Brigade, they might feel it should not be sung at a football match but this does not give them any right to describe the singing of this song as “sectarian”.

It seems to me wholly unacceptable that BBC Scotland can present evidence to the Committee that has no direct bearing on the matter under consideration. I would ask, for this reason, that Part A of their paper and the appendices A, B, C, E, F and G be considered as inadmissible and withdrawn. I have no objection to Part B and appendix D being forwarded to the Committee. If, for whatever reason, that is not feasible I would strongly contend that the complainants be given the time and opportunity to collate additional evidence of their own that is contextual rather than directly relevant. If neither solution is allowed I would consider the process as totally flawed. I look forward to hearing from you.

    Yours,

They are part of us but fully deserve any praise that comes their way.

Have to disagree with you re. the support supporting when needed. Used to be the case in the old jingle days but now with the luxury of seating the old hauns would be well and truly sat on if it were not for the GB.

    Credit were credit is due.

Unless of course you reckon we’d be doing the huddle without them, you reckon The Thai Tims would be singing Just Can’t Get Enough in memory of Raemonn or the Main Stand (The Prawn Sandwhich Brigade) would be singing Paddy McCourts Fenian Army without them.

Re your choice of instruments, I’d echo that in pretty much the same order, though the fiddle just beats the other to 1st place for me. Love the Cello.

Had to smile at that, like trying “to get a kiss out of a greased up pig”.

They (the Uilleann pipes) must be amongst the most difficult instruments to play – good players are a rarity. But when played well…..stunning sound.

Best concert I’ve ever been to in my puff: Liam O’Flynn with Arty McGlynn, mid-nineties Kellic Connctions. A Saturday afternoon, guiness lined up on the table, ashtrays for smoking, and foot tappin, outstanding Irish tunes from two of the best.

Imagine my dismay when queuing up to get into the festival club at the Central Hotel the same night, the first year they introduced bouncers (still a few years before tickets though) to see the two men in question having trouble getting in through the front door. Maybe it was their accents. There’s not many Irish musicians come back for that festival now, although some of them make the journey over at the same time of year for the Jimmy McHugh memorial concert (Jimmy McHugh who held a mental encyclopedia of tunes in his heid and shared them every Monday night at Sharkeys).

If you get the chance, get Liam O’Flynn’s CD The Piper’s Call, excellent stuff.

Anyway, excuse me ramblin on, this is meant to be a Celtic discussion you know! :)

CAB, re Rory Donnelly, from what I hear from a very good source(always wanted to say that!!) there has been NO offers for him and the club would have to consider any decent offer. Bills all settled? No chance mate. 100k and he would be away in a shot.

A decent player but one who would not get on our U19s at the min IMHO

  12. Just needed to say that I was at the game today (Wednesday night as well) and I thought we played scintillating, exilarating football in both games. Today, however, we got our just reward. Congratulations to all the players. I didn’t detect a single weakness. Everyone played well. Congratulations to Georgios Samaras – who frustrates me at times – but when someone deserves credit it has to be given. You were immense today Sammi – keep it up. We all want you to do well. You have the equipment and the skill. We love it when you put your talent to good use.

Great to see Gary Hooper back to his best. He means so much to this Celtic team when he is his usual deadly self. Victor Wanyama is a star in the making – a truly great talent. What can be said about Dylan McGeough’s goal – superb. To think he came on for the great James Forrest and scored a goal like that! The goal of the last 5 seasons.

I am very hopeful that we are hiting form slowly, but surely at exactly the right time. We now need to keep the momentum going and make sure that we don’t slip up before the 28th December.

I am really pleased for Neil Lennon and his backroom team. They have had to endure a lot of criticism during the period when they have had to cope with a horrendous injury list but they are now starting to make ground and inroads into Rangers lead. Let’s all get behind Neil until the end of the season and see where we end up. A lot of people have doubted him, some calling for a change in manager. Neil is beginning to show us (again) what he is made of. I think he deserves our support. We can recover the deficit. It was similar last year and we didn’t start to play until 2nd January at Ibrox. We have started to play and it’s not yet December.

About 6 or 7 weeks ago someone on here told a lovely story about his mother saying (roughly) that Celtic need people to manage them who are ‘Officer Material’ and that Neil Lennon was ‘a foot soldier’. I totally agree with the mother’s sentiment that Celtic need officer material but I have a growing feeling that we have our little ginger, Irish Napoleon already in command.

Aye dreadfull news, punted a decent wedge at half time over 1.5 goals, ah well easy come etc…

    from last blog

Neil has now got Celtic playing again and like most Celtic supporters want the team to play. We basically don’t care how he achieved it. You seem to be very concerned about “Neil Lennon” – like a lot of Rangers supporters and most of the Scottish media. I have a great pal who is a Rangers supporter who told me recently that Neil Lennon ‘hasn’t got it and Celtic should get rid of him”. Why are you all so concerned about Neil Lennon being Celtic’s manager?

I don’t give a monkey’s chunkie who manages Rangers. I have no thoughts on whether or not Rangers should keep or sack any particular manager they have had at the moment or in the past. Why are you all so anxious to see the demise of Neil Lennon? Is it because since he has been Celtic manager some of you supporters have disgraced themselves in such an appalling way in their behaviour towards him? Is it because his treatment and the treatment of Celtic FC has been so bad and so many of your fellow travellers have been caught out (after being given enough rope to hang themselves with) that rules and procedures have had to be introduced to ensure fairness for all which immeditely disadvantages Rangers FC and as a consequence outrages their triumphalist support?

re the celtic discussion thing…. I know… but I treat this blog, rightly or wrongly, as another source of education…. haven’t seen a blog to compare. As me old ma would say “I make no apology”

    …………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

Fair comment and while I hold out no great hopes for our complaints it must be the case that even though the BBC Trust defend their Scottish staff they must at the same time realise just what a bunch of plonkers they are when they have to resort to the level of argument they resort to?

The knowledge of Nevin and McLean is hardly present let alone prescient as it would have to be to allow the argument of Rennes and Hibs to be deployed in their defence.

I will get something away to make this point as well.

  19. Thought the GB were terrific today.

We’ll have to agree to disagree then mate. I hold a members ticket at Cliftonville, an ex board member has told me that a bid of 110k was made, discussed at board level and rejected.

As for the bills, yes all settled. I didn’t said paid though. With the new 3g pitch going down last season it’s created a new revenue stream that makes payment easier, for what it’s worth the only outstanding bill we have is the tax bill fro HMRC…don’t laugh. But that bill has been around for years and now it’s in the process of being paid. As i said before we don’t need to sell Rory Donnelly, we got close to 80k for Liam Boyce plus add ons ( that’ll not happen, obviously) so the money from that, plus the pitch rentals day in day out is making the day to day runnings of the club a load easier.

I have been critical of the BBC consolidation or using generic responses and we weaken our case if we are seen to do the same and while cooperation and discussion on forums such as this is good verbatim copying of letters is bad news! IMHO of course.
