Celtic and grasping how the world works

293

Your timely reminder.  Players who are available at the start of a transfer window fall into one of a few categories:

Their clubs do not value them.
Their clubs need for cash is too urgent to wait until the end of the window (see Rapid Vienna).
Their clubs operate in a weak market, where the offer was a surprise and no other is expected.
When the player downs tools.

If a club is operating under normal financial circumstances and has an in-demand talent, why would it sell before the end of the window, when they can work on attracting higher bids?  If you were Celtic manager, why would you sanction the sale of a top player early in a window?

We all know why deals happen late in the window.  It frustrates the life out of all of us, but it’s the consequence of a natural bargaining position.  Yet, goldfish-like memories really struggle with how the world around them works.  There are exceptions, but see the above list for every one of them.

Then there’s the buyer.  Option 4 is available, and you can have him at the start of the window but none of the coaches really want Option 4.  They want Option 1, Option 2 at a push, but the further down the list you go, the less likely they are to give you the green light.  You might even hear, “Option 4 is no better than what we’ve got, so forget it” – which happens often.

Celtic are in the market for a striker.  Utrecht managed to sign a 26-year-old striker on 10 January with a Europa League winners medal, and experience in the Italian and German top flights.  Celtic have Oh at the Asian Cup and are relying on Kyogo, why can’t we do what Utrecht have managed?

We are in the market for a left back.  Now Greg Taylor is injured, we have to play his understudy Alexandro Bernabei against Ross County.  There are dozens of left backs available within Celtic’s budget, why haven’t we signed one already this month?

Tell me, why can’t we do what Utrecht did and sign a player with the pedigree of Sam Lammers, or just go out and spend £3.5m again and sign another Bernabei or Boli Bolingoli?  It can’t be that difficult!

Failure to grasp how the world works – when it is so obvious and predictable – holds people back more than they are prepared to accept.

Delighted Matt O’Riley has his eyes on the prize.

  1. you won’t get a desirable asset from european leagues for a good price in January.

If Rodgers wants ‘quality’ additions then it has to be an older player who isn’t getting game time and can slot right in.

good ‘quality’ younger players who will gradually make an impact is not what he is after IMO.

We already have some so i think loans will be the order of the day on the last day

    My view on the summer:

Palma – has done well and intelligent player

Holm – very talented and I can see him in McGregor’s role eventually

Yang – lots of tricks but has had little or no impact. Out of the team for now

Bernardo – always looked technical but now has the bit between his teeth. Should buy him

Nawrocki – looks a good solid CH to me and i think he was supposed to have Scales’ shirt. Have a good feeling there

Lagerbielke – not enough game time to judge

    Tilio – who knows?

BR may do enough to win us the league and maybe the cup but its hardly a joyful experience.

TB, respectfully, I am bewildered by your comment.

If BR does “enough to win us the league and maybe the cup” it will be a truly joyful experience for every Celtic fan I know.

    Me included.

  3. We’ll see where we stand with the 4 quality players our manager asked for last month when the window closes.

The lack of leaks re our targets is quite extraordinary. We obviously deal with some very noble agents, we’ll no doubt see the fruits of months of recruitment work come the end of this window.

    Celtic related question.

    Who is missing.

    ●Leeds United….1970

    ● Ajax…………….1971

    ● ??????…………..1972

    .

  5. Your timely reminder ;

We are an injury away from having Scott Bain in goals.

Bernabie will start tomorrow at LB and will play at Pittodrie and Easter Road in the weeks ahead unless we move our most consistent CB this season out of position.

We’re an injury away to Kyogo from playing a winger up front.

And lastly, your timely reminder, there’s a £50 million plus prize for this league title.

Its going down from £60m but you’re still not even close.

Qualifyers for second and then the difference between EL for them and CL for us this season is around £15m so far.

  8. If we go to the last day of the window and try to buy someone I think the prices will go up. Every club and every agent will know that we are desperate and in panic mode. It doesn’t make sense to me to wait until the last minute. In any case, I don’t think we’ll buy. I think we’ll be looking at loan signings.

It’s known that January is a very hard time to bring a player in, so WHY did we not adequately recruit in the summer?

Are you seriously suggesting that if Celtic had spent multi-millions on top several class players in the summer instead of spreading it over the two windows, that the malcontents would quietly accept zero player purchases in January?

    Not a chance.

  12. January is a tough window? So get it right in the summer. The positions we’re interested in are the same positions that needed strengthening pre-season.

    Not worth arguing.

Some folk just need someone to blame.

Question) Billy McNeill’s first managerial post?

  18. boondock saint on

Not ideal that wee greg is injured. A much maligned player who always gives his best for our team. Plays the inverted full back role really well. I think he has improved tremendously for us. I don’t think Bernabei is the solution as he’s not an out and out defender. Would love to get another LB and a forward in , but not holding my breath, and that is no slant on anyone, manager, board, heated driveways.whatever. Great to have the bhoys back tomorrow. Lets get started on the right foot and score a few against the Staggies. The mainstream are waiting for us to fail again. They have bigged up big lurch over at Webrokes but still spend the money something big. He is not the messiah, he’s just a naughty ugly boy.

Come on the hoops. Anyone bought the Cross Keys bar yet in Wishy. My wife was not too happy when I suggested giving up teaching and coaching and using all my future teacher retirement to by the place:))))

  19. In other news the Huns sign a 20 year old Brazilian left back with 20 appearances in the Cypriot league.

  20. No other signings ,so wait till end of the Window to announce CCV new deal? ……..will be like signing a new player…….classic stuff.

  21. Hay BELFASTJOE,

obviously, the Scottish born players of Celtic will always be remembered for their triumphs in 1967, but what notable achievement did Scottish born footballer Tommy Leishman also make in 1967?
