Celtic and grasping how the world works

293

Your timely reminder.  Players who are available at the start of a transfer window fall into one of a few categories:

Their clubs do not value them.
Their clubs need for cash is too urgent to wait until the end of the window (see Rapid Vienna).
Their clubs operate in a weak market, where the offer was a surprise and no other is expected.
When the player downs tools.

If a club is operating under normal financial circumstances and has an in-demand talent, why would it sell before the end of the window, when they can work on attracting higher bids?  If you were Celtic manager, why would you sanction the sale of a top player early in a window?

We all know why deals happen late in the window.  It frustrates the life out of all of us, but it’s the consequence of a natural bargaining position.  Yet, goldfish-like memories really struggle with how the world around them works.  There are exceptions, but see the above list for every one of them.

Then there’s the buyer.  Option 4 is available, and you can have him at the start of the window but none of the coaches really want Option 4.  They want Option 1, Option 2 at a push, but the further down the list you go, the less likely they are to give you the green light.  You might even hear, “Option 4 is no better than what we’ve got, so forget it” – which happens often.

Celtic are in the market for a striker.  Utrecht managed to sign a 26-year-old striker on 10 January with a Europa League winners medal, and experience in the Italian and German top flights.  Celtic have Oh at the Asian Cup and are relying on Kyogo, why can’t we do what Utrecht have managed?

We are in the market for a left back.  Now Greg Taylor is injured, we have to play his understudy Alexandro Bernabei against Ross County.  There are dozens of left backs available within Celtic’s budget, why haven’t we signed one already this month?

Tell me, why can’t we do what Utrecht did and sign a player with the pedigree of Sam Lammers, or just go out and spend £3.5m again and sign another Bernabei or Boli Bolingoli?  It can’t be that difficult!

Failure to grasp how the world works – when it is so obvious and predictable – holds people back more than they are prepared to accept.

Delighted Matt O’Riley has his eyes on the prize.

  1. Big Giako was a sore loss

He was a solid striker that scored goals

If we didnt have kyogo, he would be our number 1

It’s why we struggle to sign a striker in the last 2 windows

Who is gona come and sit on the bench?????

    Reminded me of Moussa

  2. Clunks 10.53pm

Selective memory (for all of us) sometimes while starting he was a Greek Oh … I like big Oh as well as Gia … but my point was …

Every player wanted to leave … Gia knew if Kyogo was for he’d be sitting in the dug out

  3. Good to see the class clown Jason Leitch called out for the imposter that he is.

Hoist by his own p’tard actually. He actually he deleted his own messages but was done in by Humza in reality. He has shared copy of Leitches admission of winging it with suitable emoji. I wonder if he has the barefaced cheek to carry on in role. Self promoting little piece of excrement.

  4. GFTB

When we hit early balls into the front post (as we did when kyogo was injured)

    He was imperious

Last 6 months he was with us we stopped hitting that near post

And his form dropped, and the goals dried up

Kyogo was always our first pick

Someone mentioned Gia leaving as he wasnt gona sit on the bench

And I cant argue with that

Which is why we will struggle to sign a striker….

  5. I see Michelle Mone has had her assets frozen

Barrowman will have somewhere to hang his wet duffelcoat now😎

  6. GFTB @ 10:49 PM,

That’s a very interesting and mixed bunch of players you have there, only one thing they have in common, all very good players that left for pastures new.

However, some Celtic careers were managed better than others.

We could have got more time with VvD in the Hoops and could certainly have had a much better payday.

Selling Frimpong in the January when we were going for ten in a row shows the Board’s priorities, if we had held on to him and developed him more, again we could have had the services of a too fullback a little longer and a better payday

    .

GG and JJ are both on record as stating they wanted to stay at Celtic, imo they had done enough to warrant an enhanced contract and could have been invaluable this season

Brendan Rodgers asked Stuart Armstrong to sign a one year extension to his contract and promised him a move then.

We got Stuart for an extra season and he got his move to the EPL – win, win.

The money for players like Jota and Keiran make it very difficult to turn bids down and they left with our blessing.

We are in a much better position now, we can offer players better contracts and hold on to them for an extra season or two much like the quiffs time.

We just have to get better and smarter at managing our quality, high value players and the omens in that regard are good.

    Hail Hail

  7. Clunks 11.04pm

That’s why I think we will struggle to get a striker to be Kyogo’s understudy

If our Japanese Bhoy is fit he starts every game

MissGFTB shouts in me yesterday screaming thought there was something wrong “dad dad .. I’ve liked Kyogo’s tick Tok 8th person, look” she had took a screenshot .. I suppose it was maybe me in the early 80s getting a signature :-)

  8. Chairbhoy 11.09pm

Unlike us (posters on Celtic forums) the point is all those players it’s their jobs …

Am no board lover and don’t care about any board but our selling point as a club to Frimpong to Van Dijk to Matt O’Riley …. Sign with us and you can progress to where ever you want to be …

We can’t keep these players in Scotland .. getting them here should be enjoyed not a negative …

At the end of the day we will still have Celtic, all who have left will have many millions in the bank and hopefully enjoyed their time in paradise 🍀

  9. Can I just say I want new signings before Wednesday but as Brendan has stated only signings who will improve the starting 11

For fellow Celts who are underwhelmed with Khune if somebody said in the summer that Kyogo, Maeda, O’Riley & CCV will ALL sign long term contracts would you think that was no too bad

  10. Am not sure we will get any new signings this window that will improve the first team

    And to be honest

    Am cool with that

We will retain all our top players

Our injured stars are coming back

    =======

We are coming into a period where we dominate

Mainly because we dont have to play 2 games a week (ie europe)

This is our time to shine

    And I believe we will

  11. Clunks 11.43pm

The most important part is Brendan now has week to week to work with the players, which he didn’t have up till December… am confident of a double, Brendan has probably a point to prove to himself ..

A wee signing or two would certainly be welcome but with Hatate being back fit … is like a new signing :-)

  12. One game a week is so important for us

Hatate, Abada (especially for kyogo) and CCV being fit and getting recovery time is huge for us

We also had daizen and AJ recovering from injuries

Am confident that we can kick on and sink the huns in this part of the season, as we have always done

  13. GFTB @ 11:19 PM,

Well you are supportive of Brendan and not every poster nor Board member, for that matter is.

If he is allowed to manage things his way, and Ange was allowed that leeway without business dogma to the forefront, then the first team will improve.

The Celtic “stepping stone” needs to cut both ways, that seems to be happening now.

    Clunk’s…

Keeping hold of good players is key, replacing them at the right time, with the right players, whether that’s understudies or new recruits is a must.

Anyway, the witching hour approaches and I’m away to the land of nod…

    Have a great one fholks

    Hail Hail

  14. Chairbhoy 11.58pm

Brendan nearly broke me as a Celtic fan .. am a Paul McStay, Tommy Burns & Neil Lennon type of fan, when Brendan bolted (and he did bolt) was a bit of a dagger in the Celtic heart :-)

But … always a but … time is a great healer and when we had a chance of getting him back I was 100% for it … glad we have a terrific manager back in charge of our team…. 🍀🍀🍀

  15. Good matchday morning to all you lovely Celtic supporters.

I cannot stand both the Liewells hence the posting as I think I could do a better job, heck most of you could.

I will reign it in a bit, have a lovely day guys and 5 – 0 to the bhoys.

    D. :)

  16. Summer 2023 transfers weren’t an immediate success. Out of the cup at the first hurdle and disappointing European campaign.

6 months in, and Brendan is managing to get a performance from our Ange signings.

We’re looking much better, stronger, more joined up.

Would appear we’re happy to consolidate rather than strengthen. Some of the chasing pack are going all in.

Will our policy be enough? Interesting few months ahead. Reckon my old ticker would prefer boring but successful!

Good morning all from Govanhill. Gerrintaethum Celtic!!!!

Many thanks to Big Jimmy, Leggy, SFTB, Thelurkintim and Carpe Diem for a fun day at the Shipbank. I ended up in the Scotia Bar for a nightcap.

And many thanks to wee Frank and his staff for their service, rolls and the hot pies. 😋

  19. Chairbhoy- from last night, I have posted a few times that I wouldn’t buy anyone who couldn’t improve us in Europe, Shankland and Miovski no thanks, but I would like to see who Lawwell Jr had lined up.HH

  20. Time to depart Arbroath for my visit to Paradise….an experience I seem to enjoy more than some on here :-))

5-0 is an obvious prediction but I feel these types of games can end up being a nervy 1-0 as the opposition , with little hope of winning, can prove difficult to break down. So, with that in mind, I`ll go for 5-0 :-)

Actually, I think 3-0 is more likely.

Cheerio for now and try to enjoy the experience, Bhoys. There are people all over the planet who would love to be where we are all going to be this afternoon.
