Celtic and grasping how the world works

293

Your timely reminder.  Players who are available at the start of a transfer window fall into one of a few categories:

Their clubs do not value them.
Their clubs need for cash is too urgent to wait until the end of the window (see Rapid Vienna).
Their clubs operate in a weak market, where the offer was a surprise and no other is expected.
When the player downs tools.

If a club is operating under normal financial circumstances and has an in-demand talent, why would it sell before the end of the window, when they can work on attracting higher bids?  If you were Celtic manager, why would you sanction the sale of a top player early in a window?

We all know why deals happen late in the window.  It frustrates the life out of all of us, but it’s the consequence of a natural bargaining position.  Yet, goldfish-like memories really struggle with how the world around them works.  There are exceptions, but see the above list for every one of them.

Then there’s the buyer.  Option 4 is available, and you can have him at the start of the window but none of the coaches really want Option 4.  They want Option 1, Option 2 at a push, but the further down the list you go, the less likely they are to give you the green light.  You might even hear, “Option 4 is no better than what we’ve got, so forget it” – which happens often.

Celtic are in the market for a striker.  Utrecht managed to sign a 26-year-old striker on 10 January with a Europa League winners medal, and experience in the Italian and German top flights.  Celtic have Oh at the Asian Cup and are relying on Kyogo, why can’t we do what Utrecht have managed?

We are in the market for a left back.  Now Greg Taylor is injured, we have to play his understudy Alexandro Bernabei against Ross County.  There are dozens of left backs available within Celtic’s budget, why haven’t we signed one already this month?

Tell me, why can’t we do what Utrecht did and sign a player with the pedigree of Sam Lammers, or just go out and spend £3.5m again and sign another Bernabei or Boli Bolingoli?  It can’t be that difficult!

Failure to grasp how the world works – when it is so obvious and predictable – holds people back more than they are prepared to accept.

Delighted Matt O’Riley has his eyes on the prize.

Guys wake up Liewell’s bonus is more important than signing players, players are an irritant to the Liewell bhoys, they use up cash that can go to them.

Lawell junior is head or recruitement – not an executive position and not on the board – if he gets a bonus it will be in line with whatever is paid to salired employees.

    what a f team!

  4. The query isn’t whether transfer windows are frustrating or are easy answers fundable; the query is – how do we address the pain of our CL points this season and hope beyond hope we can be better next CL (if we win the SPfhunvarL

  5. STRATEGY, THE BUSINESS MODEL AND OBJECTIVES

The Group’s objective is to be a world-class football club through our strategy and business model for growth focusing on three key areas:

    (i) Core Business – football operations with a self-sustaining financial model, relying upon: youth academy; player development; player recruitment; management of the player pool; sports science and performance analysis; and football

    success.

(ii) Development of the Celtic Brand – incorporating the development of Celtic Park and the development of

    international revenues.

(iii) Improvement in the football environment in which Celtic plays – representation within football governance and administration at domestic and European level.

We need to score more goals, we didnt score a goal away from home this season and never looked like it. We’re giving 3 points to every team in the group.

Better attacking options or improvements in the players we already have

  8. Our XG was the second worst of all the teams in the groups, our performance against Xg was also one of the worst.

  9. Amidst the increasing and constant doom and gloom of so many posts on here, it was great to read of C C-V signing a new contract.

IMO, he has contributed every bit as much as Virgil van Dyke did for us . I repeat, great news but even that was met by less than unilateral joy as some just had to look for a possible dark side.

  10. Rock Tree Bhoy on

Reading back there, my goodness, so much negativity, you would think we were bottom of the league.

  11. No more players who wont improve us, or have the potential to improve us in Europe

Dont waste a squad place on someone who’s guaranteed to not improve us in Europe

  12. boondock saint on

    Hi ConeyBhoy

I agree with you that there have been times that Greg and Liam have been caught out of position and pushed too far up the field. I think the one that comes to mind is the Huns game and the ball over and through to McAusland ( who I think they have a good one there, unfortunately:(((( I think it all changed as a fullback from when we had Boyd and McKinlay sprinting up the field and putting crosses in a plenty. I don’t think Greg gets a lot of help when Maeda isn’t on his side. I think it can be difficult for our marking backs as when you play at Celtic, you are more on the front foot than the back one.

I wish I could afford to go back and buy the Cross Keys. Used to work there after my playing career ended and before I moved to America. Lots of fun times in that place I can tell you, and many a fake phone call made on a Friday night. great nights on a Saturday when the Reb bands would be on, and we would be packed in like fenian sardines:))))

  13. no chat on klippety klopp ?

i listened in to the whole interview, easy to speculate, but he is a mna who once he makes his mind up is convinced he is doing the right thing for him and the club.

    —————

Politically, Klopp considers himself to be left-wing. He told journalist Raphael Honigstein:

I’m on the left, of course. More left than middle. I believe in the welfare state. I’m not privately insured. I would never vote for a party because they promised to lower the top tax rate. My political understanding is this: if I am doing well, I want others to do well, too. If there’s something I will never do in my life it is vote for the right”.[270]

That’s the third time you’ve posted that Celtic should go ahead and sign Beck now and leave him on the fringes until next season.

Let me be the 4th poster to tell you that the rule says a player cannot be registered with more than 2 clubs in one season. Registered means “signed”. It doesn’t matter if Beck doesn’t kick a ball in earnest. He still can’t be registered with a third club this season.

  15. The Star Above The Crest on

St Mirren have signed a left back on loan to provide competition for the only left back they have on their books (according to their manager).

What do St Mirren know about recruiting in January that our ‘World Class in Everything They Do’ board don’t?

  16. THE STAR ABOVE THE CREST on 26TH JANUARY 2024 6:23 PM

should celtic be buying saint mirren level players ?

  17. What is the Starz on

Despite the evil plans of Peter Lawwell, Celtic remain the most successful football club in Scotland…What a failure he has been with his plans to undermine Celtic

  18. celtic40-

I think the feeling of the blog is that we can only do that by acting within our current model – can’t see us finding a player to demolish teams away from home in the CL but at the same time I understand the NatPhillips effect – I’m a classic fence sitter.

Should Celtic sign no players to provide cover/competition?

    ————-

i seem to be in a small minoroty here, but I actually trust the processes and people we have in place within the recruitment department at celtic park.

I believe these people will have databases and analytics of every footballer on the planet (almost0.

I actually believe they have been succesful in bringing players to the club that get developted, often become first teamers (or not), adding to our trophy haul, then many are moved on for record fees, resulting in more money in the bank.

it is a constant, it doesnt begin the night the window closes.

the fact we havnt brought a left back in says to me, we didnt get identified targets, for whatever reason.

i neither think the “fails” are catastophic either

  20. JACKIEMAC on 26TH JANUARY 2024 6:34 PM

I think we’re looking to our best experienced players to stick around and form the basis of the team and get the difference makers in at a younger age and develop them into the sort of players who will make the difference at the top level

All our signings will be with those two groups in mind.

Summer window was about prospects, this window more about established players.

I hope we don’t settle for poorer quality players to make up the numbers, every signing must be with the CL in mind and if we can’t get them now don’t fill the squad up, wait until the Summer.

  21. I’m not sure what it says about anything but we’ve made as many signings in this window as the three other teams in our cl group combined

Maybe what you’d expect from a team that finished bottom but it’s not like the other three teams haven’t got champions league places to fight for in their domestic leagues.

Lazio and Atletico are looking to make more signings but seem to be leaving it late to do their business

  22. Gold Coast Tom- there are multiple ways to sign a player, we all know that you can’t play for 3 teams blah blah, you must have been furiously reading back re O’Riley and found nothing. As far as Brendan goes,I was one of the first on here to get him back, never thought it would happen, but in my opinion (which is what blogs are for),if he’s not backed in summer, he will walk.

  23. The Star Above The Crest on

    Thanks for the reply.

I think it’s negligent that we only have Bernabei as cover at LB. I think it’s negligent that we seem to only have Bain as cover for GK. I think it’s negligent that we’ve no cover for Kyogo and we’ve advertised his vulnerable shoulder.

We had a chance in the summer (and the funds) to address these issues but didn’t. At least our CEO got the chance to crack some jokes at the AGM. That would have been nice for him.

  24. In other Scottish defenders to Italy transfer news Ryan Porteus was on his way to Udinese until the deal collapsed when the owners of both clubs (the same people) realized that Brexit regs meant he couldn’t go

  25. Can he hit the bye-line and cross a ball? Surely these are prerequisites for a Celtic full back?

pity that both our current full backs can’t.
