Celtic exploit Wednesday collapse, a morality tale in two players

725

Celtic’s pillage of Yorkshire’s young talent continued yesterday with the arrival of 20-year-old Dutch player Osaze Urhoghide from Sheffield Wednesday.  Osaze is a central defender and arrives a few days after fellow Wednesday graduate, midfielder Liam Shaw.

Sheffield Wednesday are in turmoil.  Their most recent published accounts, to June 2019, showed a trading loss of £17m on a turnover of £22.8m – horrendous, but an improvement on the previous year’s trading loss of £23.7m.  They sold Hillsborough for £38m during season 2018-19, switched the accounts to a £19m profit, but they are now a club without a stadium-sized asset on the balance sheet.

Since then, a bad situation has gotten considerably worse.  Despite being the biggest team in the Championship by some margin, the finished bottom of the table in May; at least one season of third tier football awaits.

In short, Osaze and Liam may read about Celtic’s supposed turmoil last season and kick into the Monty Python Four Yorkshiremen sketch:

“You were lucky. We lived for three months in a paper bag in a septic tank. We used to have to get up at six in the morning, clean the paper bag, eat a crust of stale bread, go to work down t’ mill, fourteen hours a day, week-in week-out, for sixpence a week, and when we got home Peter Lawwell would thrash us to sleep wi’ his belt.”  I’m pretty sure that’s how I remember it.

Football is a zero sum game and where one giant club disintegrates, others see opportunity.  Young players with talent and options will not stay.

Celtic were able to use the arbitrage permitted to them with not being bound by transfer rules between two FA member clubs.  That money, perhaps in the region of £5m a piece for Shaw and Urhoghide, went on wage offers outbidding clubs from England.  It’s a rerun of the Dembele deal from four years ago.

I have been saying for years the Championship is the most dysfunctional league in the world.  It also causes Scottish Premiership clubs more trouble than any other.  Where Wednesday have gone, others will follow.  It is a morality tale in the making.

Ange doesn’t look like the sort of coach you will find standing on the sidelines during a game with his hands on his hips and a dumfounded look on his face declaring ‘its almost as if the players have run out of ideas!’ When Neil came out with that earlier this year it was obvious he was the one who had run out of ideas, Anyway, Ange does not look or sound like that type of coach, very early days yet but he is shaping up to be a massive improvement on what has gone before.

BTW If you really want to ‘discuss’ issues that concern Celtic supporters then (Celtic are an Irish/Scottish team) you would respect that Irish dimension more than you do. You could for example comment on the Protocol, or the comments on it by Kate Hoey (see below). You can reply directly to me on how the Protocol should be dealt with – do you want a hard border on the island of Ireland? Maybe you would rather just watch the football.

Let’s not get our knickers in a twist because our new manager has a Mic on in training

The instructions can be heard at any under 15s session in most football landscapes

Why are we going public with our training messages

Why are we trying to advertise what a great manager we have

The league table will decide how good our manager is

I am hopeful he has the character and knowledge to make us a decent team

But don’t sell me a basic training session as top of the range

The jury remains out – time and the league table will decide how good he is

I thought the mike’d session was a good move. The shear bumf from the msm the following day tells me it did some sort of job.

Early days yes, but let’s see. I’m backing us (if I can) to win the league by a 10 point margin. Maybe unfounded, just gotta a feeling. 🍀

“you would respect that Irish dimension more than you do”

    ——

Both sets of my grandparents were Irish. I do not need to advertise my proud Irish credentials – I know who I am, I have no need to prove it to anyone.

My father and his brother served with honour(s) & distinction for Britain in WW2 – I am also proud of that.

The situation in the island of Ireland has confounded many who are infinitely cleverer than I – it will, like the exit from the EU, after much wrangling, be settled over time. It is important that there is no return to the mindless slaughter of innocent members of the public – intelligent people will not let that happen. For what it’s worth, I believe that the island of Ireland will be re-united within the next twenty years – economic & demographic factors will determine; just as the complete lack of a coherent economic case for an independent Scotland will permanently derail the independence bandwagon.

You sound like a politician – just answer what you were asked.

    So:

    1. Do you agree with Kate Hoey that there should be protests against the protocol?

    2. Should there be a border poll?

    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

OMG. I suppose that says all that needs to be said.

The British came up with the Protocol. The majority of those in the North of Ireland voted against Brexit. The High Court said the Protocol was legal, and she turns up here and says this is only the beginning of the street protests! Try living here, mate, and see how inciteful that language is, BUT SHE KNOWS WHAT SHE IS DOING.

Enough said. BTW a totally different discussion would be – do you agree with the halting of the enquiry into the Bloody Sunday massacre? We will leave that for another day. Maybe we could be in a pub on our way to a Celtic game rather than bore people here who really would prefer to talk about Celtic or England losing to the Ukraine.

I will leave it to others to draw their own conclusions.
