CELTIC FAN KOs LENNY

BOYHOOD Celtic fan Scott McTominay heaped misery on Hoops legend Neil Lennon at Old Trafford last night.

The Europa League encounter between the giants of Manchester United and the minnows of Omonia Nicosia was goalless heading into the third minute of stoppage time.

However, Lennon’s hopes of a truly extraordinary result against Cristiano Ronaldo and Co were scuppered when McTominay, who had come on as an 81st-minute substitute, managed to fire a late, late winner behind heroic keeper Francis Uzoho.

The Cypriots had been unfortunate to lose 3-2 on their home ground last week and lightning struck twice in Manchester.

LATE, LATE WINNER…Scott McTominay fires in the stoppage-time drive to dump Neil Lennon’s side.

OLD TRAFFORD ANGUISH…Neil Lennon is stunned after Scott McTominay’s strike.

United boss Erik Ten Hag went with an attacking line-up with Antony, Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford backing up the Portuguese superstar.

However, it looked the big guns had been spiked by Lennon’s gallant line-up with former Hoops star Adam Matthews playing at right-back.

However, the good work went for nothing when McTominay made the breakthrough in the third minute of stoppage time.

The Scotland international midfielder accepted possession eight yards out and took a touch before flashing a low drive into the net.

Afterwards, McTominay, speaking to the media, said: “We knew we needed to win the game, but knew they’d be fired up, too.

“Neil Lennon is a great coach and no games like this are ever easy. Everyone is pleased with the result.

“You have to be patient sometimes. Their goalkeeper was a different class, but we created enough chances and deserved to score in the end. It’s a massive goal because we need to win the group.”

Lennon might have got a closer look at the goal hero who almost joined the Parkhead club on loan from the Old Trafford outfit in January 2019, as CQN reported at the time.

The Irishman, of course, returned to Celtic just a month later after Brendan Rodgers’ dramatic exit for Leicester City.
