The litany of recent disasters to lower league opposition in the Scottish Cup, that is always read out when Celtic face a smaller club, on this occasion only served to underline what a solid performance the team gave against Peterhead. After a brief alarm 42 seconds into the game Celtic were in complete control and apart from Joe ‘Could’ve been a Contender’ Ledley, looked like they enjoyed their trip to the North East.
Neither Paddy McCourt, Emilio Izaguirre nor Kelvin Wilson were particularly exuberant during the exercise, but they will have benefited from the 90 minutes, just as James Forrest and Gary Hooper will benefit from the rest.
For Celtic, focus is now on Dundee United on Saturday. Meanwhile, Rangers’ Nikica Jelavic has been giving a similar message to the Croatian media, while speaking about his dream of a move to England and how Rangers may prefer a 25 point penalty and a suspension from Europe to paying a hefty tax bill:
“A transfer to England attracts me very much. I have dreamed about this for years. My aim is to move to a bigger club who play regularly in Europe, I want to shape up.
“The truth is that Rangers struggle with very deep financial problems. They owe 50 million euro in taxes, although there are a few different scenarios as to how this could be resolved.
“If they could get some money from my transfer they could pay-off part of the debts they accumulated through the years. There is also talk of bankruptcy.
“If I move it will be decision of the owners of the club.
“One potential outcome might be a 25 point penalty and one year suspension from Europe, which could be a better outcome than paying 50 million euro in tax.
“The team is focused on training and playing. We would like to stay together and fight for the title.”
I have to agree, a 25 point penalty, with single season consequences, sounds like a very attractive outcome for Rangers, who are away to St Johnstone at lunchtime on Saturday.

Sky sports – “The Plus Stock Exchange is also currently conducting an investigation into the circumstances under which Craig Whyte’s seven year disqualification from acting as a director in 2000 were not disclosed at the time of his appointment to the board of Rangers FC on May 6, 2011.”
After the announcement to the stock exchange on Monday, the club announced that it is currently considering removing its listing with Plus after May 6, one year to the date that Craig Whyte took over at Ibrox.
Chairman Mr Whyte said: “Given the structure of the shareholding in the club, there is very little, if any, tangible benefit for the club to be a listed company.
“The fact that the club has a majority shareholder controlling more than 80% means there is very little trading in shares.
“In reality, a public listing means more bureaucracy. Rangers does not need to remain a listed company in order for people to buy and sell their individual shares and since becoming chairman I have always questioned what is really being achieved with a public listing.
“Whether or not we are a listed company, accounts will still be published and there will still be a shareholders’ AGM. All shareholders would be able to hold the directors to account.”
Rangers’ ability to buy and/or sell players in the January transfer window is not affected by the announcement.
Scottish Premier League rules state a club will only be subject to a registration embargo if it suffers an “insolvency event”, such as going into administration.

I think David Cameron should have announced an referendum on the day the SNP won a majority in the Scottish Parliament. We could have had the question settled for a generation before Christmas.
The one thing that nobody seems to be talking about is that the SNP doesn’t advocate an independent Scotland.
The SNP supports “independence in Europe”, i.e. not independence in any meaningful sense at all.
As Phil Mac Giolla Bhain wrote previously, Ireland is now effectively a province of the EU. Its government is merely a rubber stamp for the Commission and the European Central Bank. Ireland faces a bleak future since the EU has forced it to accept high interest loans that will impoverish the country for generations to come, in a futile attempt to bail out the Euro, which is doomed anyway.
This is the future the SNP is trying to bring about for Scotland: the hope of being a province once again, except this time as part of a much larger political union in which the Scots will have considerably less influence than they do within the UK.
The idea of “devolution max” might be a good one though.
If the Scottish Government can only spend the taxes it raises in Scotland, without fiscal transfers from England to bail them out, expect a rapid resurgence of old-fashioned Scottish Tory values of thrift, low taxes, and small government.
Socialism always fails when it runs out of other people’s money. We’ve seen that happen on a UK-wide level, but apparently Scotland needs to learn the same lesson the hard way. (thumbsup)
CELTIC are considering making a move for Rapid Vienna striker Hamdi Salihi.
Manager Neil Lennon confirmed their interest in the Albanian scoring sensation, who was first linked to the club in 2010. Salihi – nicknamed ‘The Bomber’ – has more than filled the void left at the Austrian club since Nikica Jelavic moved to Rangers, scoring 44 goals in under 70 appearances.
Lennon has already added Mikael Lustig to his squad in this window, and will this week take a look at Rabiu Ibrahim, a 20-year-old Nigerian midfielder who is a free agent since ending his contract with PSV Eindhoven.
But a striker and a central defender are still top of his shopping list. Celtic are waiting to find out if they can beat off the opposition for Maritimo’s Baba Diawara, although the asking price is now over £5million.
But 27-year-old Salihi – who is out of contract in the summer, and has so far rejected the offer of a new deal from Rapid – could be the target man to give them the attacking boost the manager believes they need.
Lennon said: “He is a player we have known about from the Jelavic days. He might be an option, but I have nothing further to say on that.”
Meant to say earlier – did any of you see Soccer AM on Saturday? I don’t normally watch it now because I’m almost always working of a Saturday morning. They do a “Team Mates” section, and ask a player questions about his squad. Allan McGregor, McGregory to his colleagues, was the selected player. Every 2nd answer was Lee McCulloch – couldn’t even hide it when he was asked who the hardest player in the squad was.

6. Suspension
Shares in a quoted company can be suspended for two reasons:
The company requests suspension
If a company is about to announce news of material significance to investors and it fears that a disorderly market may be created by a leak, it can ask the London Stock Exchange to suspend trading in its shares until after the announcement.
The most common reason for this is that the company is about to participate in a bid for, or by, another company. But there could be other reasons – for example if the company has unusually bad news (the MD has just fled to Brazil).
The Stock Exchange frowns on long, voluntary suspensions. It takes the view that investors should always be able to sell unwanted stock, even at very bad prices.
The Stock Exchange suspends trading
This usually heralds very bad news, although suspension can also be the Exchange’s only effective sanction against a company which persists in breaking its rules.
Shares suspended by the Exchange find it hard to return to a full listing. Sometimes the company in question has gone bankrupt. In these circumstances, shareholders just have to grit their teeth and hope something emerges from the gloom.

Don’t know about PLUS-SX but AIM will sometimes suspend if there are dramatic rises or falls in SP. Not always dodgy though sometime just the demand to buy/sell causing massive changes.

Although I think when it happens in the circumstances I described it’s might not be referred to as suspension, cause it’s very temporary. And usually it’s done so the company in question can get time to release a statement about the rise/fall, and hopefully gives those that aren’t glues to live SP feeds time to react accordingly.
Don’t really know much about this sort of procedure that THEY find themselves in but does this not mean that their stock now has no value as it cannot be traded?
Must be many orcs around the country looking at their shares and wondering if they’re any softer than a roll of Andrex as this is all their good for now!

I just don’t understand how they could go bust with a stadium worth hundreds of millions, and a playing staff worth at least double the tax liability, oh wait a minute that’s just nonsense isn’t it.
But seriously though, if they did go into receivership or administration, isn’t it their job to ensure that as many creditors as possible have their debts met. So the Stadium (if they own it should be sold), the players should be sold, the machine that paints the lines on the pitch should be sold etc etc. So how would Newrankers have any players of stadium in which to ply their vile trade?
Only a matter of time before Rangers NewCo springs into life.

Celtic may have to give up TV cash to prevent the newco simply taking the current Rangers place. The decisions our board make in the coming months could have long lasting effects on our club as the ones currently being experienced across the city.
