Celtic in Group of Champions

918

Celtic join Barcelona, Milan and Ajax in the Champions League’s only group of former champions.

We beat Barcelona and Milan the last time we played each of them, and eliminated Ajax from the same competition last time we met 12 years ago. This is an incredibly difficult group, but it is the job we wanted this time yesterday.

Now we must get ready for the task ahead.  Prepare properly and fear no one.

There will be a ticket scramble, among those who didn’t renew their season tickets………..

  1. Big Georges Fan Club - Hail, Hail, Wee Oscar on

Just read the tweet from PP re: Billy – email away as follows:

“…I have just had the misfortune to read the absolutely disgraceful comment tweeted by one of your employees with reference to Billy McNeil, former captain and manager of Glasgow Celtic FC, who assisted at the Champion’s League draw earlier today.

The comment at 17:10 on your twitter account was completely abhorrent, and the individual who posted this should be ashamed of themselves.

I have shared this comment with several friends – all wish to know what action you will be taking as a result of this. As a minimum, a responsible company would act swiftly to discipline those responsible, and would make a public apology to Mr McNeil.

My view of your company will be defined by your public reaction to this outrageous episode…”

I’d like to think we will not just be looking for profit on finding an exceptional player but build on them.

    Surely, that is our goal!

    Dear Sir,

I wish to complain in the strongest possible terms about the offensive comment about former Scottish International Billy McNeil via your Twitter account during the Champions League Draw on 29/08/13.

The apology was insufficient as it referred to ignorance of ‘circumstances’ which were not known.

As a multi national company using a social medium controlled by a single individual employee, I suggest a review of who, or why your employee, commented and whether ignorance of circumstances is relevant, in relation to what he saw, and what was said

I look forward to your comments about my complaint

    Yours Sincerely

  10. AC Milan are away to Torino and home to Napoli either side of facing Celtic at home. They are home to Genoa (2 days before) and away to Catania either side of their visit to Glasgow.

Barca are away to Almeria (2 days before) and home to Valladolid either side of their visit to Glasgow. They have no league game before (Spanish Cup?) but host Villarreal after our visit to the Camp Nou.

Ajax face FC Twente away and RKC Waalwijk at home either side of their trip to Glasgow. They face Vitesse Arnhem at home and NEC Nijmegen away either side of their home tie against Celtic.

  11. THOMAS Cook Sport and Celtic have enjoyed

My correspondence with Paddypower on hearing of their tweet!

You hi xxx , just to let you know i will be closing down my account due to Paddypower tweet about Billy McNeil

xxxx Hi P, I apologise for the tweet in question. It was not meant to cause any offence. The operator in question was not aware Billy was sick & deleted the tweet & apologised as soon as this became apparent.

You Well you are all over the celtic message boards and there is disgust at the comment. I am far from happy and that is why i won’t be betting any more with paddypower. I’ve been a customer for a long time but you have crossed the line in my opinion.

xxxx I do understand P & agree the tweet was in bad taste. I can assure you it was not intended to offend Billy or football fans in general.

You Whether it was or wasn’t I don’t want to be associated with a company that lacks respect for individuals and alot of celtic fans think the same. This is a massive og from paddypower.

xxx I do understand it has caused offence & I can only apologise on the company’s behalf P.

You Fair enough it wasn’t your fault, but i will be closing my account and im sure many celtic fans will be doing the same in protest.

xxx I understand P Would you like your account closed now?

    You yes please

Karl I have done that for you now Paul.

    You Thank you

  13. It’s been a strange, stop-start opening to Neil Lennon’s 3rd season, but there are already signs it’s shaping up to be a momentous one. I still think back to the Ross County home game as being one of the best I’ve seen Lenny’s teams play (maybe it was the combined effects of wine and Pringles that caused me to think this?). That and the performance last night showed a fluidity and intensity which I think is what Lenny has been aiming for since day one.

While we all wait for the new signings to arrive and bed in, there’s a lot to be said for teams where the players know one another well. This is Lenny’s 3rd season, and although there’s a gap in the spine of the team, with the big 3 departures, players like Forster, Brown, Ledley, Commons, Samaras, Stokes, Kayal, Mulgrew, Izzy and Forrest have all been around for pretty much the whole duration. This must have allowed them to build up greater levels of understanding in their play, and I think this season we’ll see the fruits of that.

Neil Lennon’s a complex individual. There’s a burning passion and intensity people have long associated with him, but in the last year his insight and intelligence have at last got the recognition they deserve. I think a lot of that comes from the time he spent under Martin O’Neill, and his 3rd season was fairly memorable, wasn’t it?

  14. Just sent this to PP

Utterly disgusting tweet by someone employed by your company, and by the way it matters not about the circumstances

Paddy Power will never see a penny from myself or my friends.

I agree Billy looked a wee bit frail, but I think he did really well. He was not the only one who had trouble with the balls. I think he represented Celtic very well and the one about scoring more than Inter was very quick witted.

I had the privilege of meeting him at his pub in the early nineties, his daughter was also there. He was very gracious and had me behind the bar with him posing for pictures, a giant of a man, he also talked about his sister who lives about forty kms from where I am

  19. Note to Peter Lawwell:

Alfred Finnbogason has played three games for Heerenveen against Ajax and scored 5 of Heerenveen’s 6 goals in those games. He has never tasted defeat against the Dutch (3-in-a-row) champions.

He also played once for Helsinborgs against Elfsborg and scored twice in his team’s 2-1 victory against the team which conceded just once in 180 minutes against Celtic this season.

We can afford to buy him.

But can we afford not to?

  27. Not sure if this issue has been mentioned before …

Very focused team selection last night.

NL picked from last years squad or what was left of it.

Then there were his pointed remarks about three people leaving and no replacements.

Was this a dig at our bonus happy CEO?

Looks like it to me, I wonder if more will be said in the coming days?

Now let the waiting begin …

Who will arrive to improve the squad?

Will their be a clear out of 20yr olds sent out on loan?

It is a big gap that needs closing — getting the talented youth over the hurdle to be regulars in the first team.

JF — Very laboured process with patchy results.

TW — Even worse, something wrong somewhere.

DMcG — the new SM for the teenies?

The Twins — Now or never?
