Celtic interims stunning-ageddon

858

Champions League football this season has enabled Celtic to achieve a remarkable set of interim financial results for the period 1 June 2012 to 31 December 2012.  Turnover was up 71%, a stunning-ageddon figure.

Ticket sales and other stadium revenue was up marginally, to £18.598m (2011: £16.446m), as was merchandising, to £9.847m (2001: £7.821m), both reflecting the ancillary value of Champions League participation, but the big increase was in TV and media income, £21.613m, up from a paltry £5.004m in the same period of 2011.

The only amber flag on the results was the increase in operating costs, from £28.388m to £36.961m, a 30% increase, which will reflect higher bonus payments for Champions League participation, higher wage costs and a more general increase in running costs.

Pre-tax profit came in at £14.944m, leaving net bank debt at £130k.

These are fantastic results from a well-run club which will enable ever-more solid foundations to be laid.  We are also one of the few clubs to qualify for the latter stages of the Champions League AND to do so profitably. Congratulations to all.

I’m participating on an online STV preview at 18:30 tonight, looking forward to the small challenge ahead.  Hope you can join us.

The event is part of our 125 4 125 campaign – central to reinvigorating the charitable spirit which is part of the club we love. It will be a family occasions, tickets are available at £10 for adults and £5 for children. The night has been organised by several fans working in conjunction with the people at Celtic Charity, so please do your best to support this great occasion. Individual tickets or tables are available, details here.

I’ll see you there.

capital investment during an economic down turns is shrewd for a couple of reason, business is slow so you (buyer) can get more for your money with businesses etc… by driving prices down.

it places your business in a good position when business upturn/ recovery takes place.

i did read that travel/ hotel business is expected to increase in glasgow/ scotland. (celtic given its stature should be able to generate substancial business from such activity)

there is a whole new community is being build around celtic park that should in the next 10 years see thousands of new families with disposable income entering into the community.

we are/ will be at the centre of the athletic centre of scotland with many events major events taking place so are ideally placed to tap into market with facilities/ services.

we have 40,000 + supporters every second week within and around celtic park who spend money before they attend and after they leave, or as i like to say missed opportunities.

with right facilities/ investment many people would watch celtic in pubs/ clubs hotels operated by club, buy food from these place and stay in these placed.

throw in the fact that massive improvements are needed anyway and would maybe push our club into the 21st century when it comes to looking after its supports and i can think of no reason why we should not be looking to make progress off the field.

or we could have a couple of good years (not assured) before our players leave our club for nothing while filling their pockets. as a supporter i want the best for me and every other supporter. we have the best supporters in the world bar none so our club should treat us as such

As for Efe …in the midst if his 20 hour flight ,!

Hours on Airplanes & Airports all add up +

No direct flights from Glasgow one has to

go via London for example so there is changing

flights time as well in each Airport

Jet Lag and playing in a demanding Tournament

also add’s up as well especially when ones

it over a space of two weeks go figure it’s

    No figures then ….

Nothing wrong with your ideas …but ..while we’re struggling to maintain ST sales I can’t see any significant capital investment

Bhoys the CL final is a ballot and not “first come first serve” If I recall correctly if you used a mastercard it enhances your chances.

Lots of the Italian folks at our school had ties to Lucca too.

Great people. The guys all liked football and the girls were all beautiful.

  10. Reading the thread on FF regarding our interim results you can understand how successive CEO’s of deadco, sevco have continually pulled the wool over their eyes when it comes to finance. They’re not even clever enough to be called clueless!!

  11. Great to hear that the financial situation at Celtic Park is ticking over nicely and with the next four League titles almost assured with the likely prospect of Champions League football the future has never looked better.

Watching that excellent performance by Celtic’s second string at the weekend and with the club 18 points clear at the top the alarm bells must be ringing in SPL officialdom.

Celtic may not be in a position to splash millions on players who fail to live up to obscene transfer fees but the club is now the equal of anything in the English Premiership if not better when it comes to creaming off some fine young talent in world football. We now have an abundance of young talented footballers at the club thanks to good coaching a great scouting system and long may it remain so.

  12. Chronobiologically, Efe will be fine.

He is one cool dude, and knows that jet lag needs a time zone or two to be crossed before trouble begins.

That is not really the case here I believe.

He is on a high – adrenalin will take him through the game.

    I say play the man.

Anyhows, did he break sweat AT ALL ?

He’ll be knocking on Neil’s door tomorrow saying “play me, Gaffer” or some such……

  13. There is no jet lag on the flights from SA as they are on the same time line. I have done it a couple of times and if you can get a kip on the plane you are fine. I am sure that Efe will be in first class where he can stretch his legs out and get very relaxed ( unlike me in economy!) if he is getting in tomorrow morning I am sure that he will have been well rested on the plane.

Celtic have a £33M facility with Coop Bank, comprising a (reducing balance) £10M bank loan and a £23M additional facility that remains unused (prerequisite to the deal is that the loan requires to drawn to ensure that the additional facility remains available)

The loan is scheduled to be repaid by 2019 in equal installments plus a final settlement.

Essentially, the club at 31st Dec had a £10M loan and £10M cash in the current account, netting off to zip.

The banking arrangements were made during a different era when it was foreseen that the club might need to very quickly complete the stadium by replacing the main stand with a new 2 tier structure to create an 80,000 seater stadium in anticipation of League Regionalisation. Having the finance to hand was seen at the time as a prudent move.

While the loan is used to manage cashflow through the year, it is highly unlikely that the additional facility will be drawn without radical reform of the European club scene.

  16. I am always amused at the response of some on the Board when someone dares to go “off message”. Its usually the same folk who then slag the huns for controlling all messages.

Honestly some of you would make Celtic earning an absolute fortune every year, manufacturing a small debt and doing nothing positive with the money a virture.

Others go off in the huff and immediately go down the route of suggesting that the current buy cheap sell expensive practice is something I am criticising.

For the record I am not – BUT there are customers to think of here (I use the word customer deliberately – its simply how the club see us – customers who have undying loyalty to the product and there to be exploited).

Auldheid – I GENERALLY agree with the club’s approach to player trading. However there are times when the club will need simple strengthening and/or investment. Perhaps to qualify for the CL we may need to spend a few million on a missing link player. Celtic wont do that and will readily quote debt at us as a mantra.

Now then – what are these capital investments you are mentioning – all sounds laudable but where is the business plan? Perhaps Celtic can use all of those exceptional costs and reserves they create every year to do it?

Battered Bunnett – you say its inconceivable that we wont be flush – well the club are preparing to tell you that they arent flush. This doesnt make any sense to any of us – but for the accountants amongst us there are LEGAL mechanisms to manage this. The massive increase in operating costs – now is that broken down anywhere? If Celtic have paid absolutely massive bonus’ to the players then there is a whole different question to be asked about the management of the club. I cant imagine that is the sole reason for those massive increase in costs.

Now you say Battered Bunnett that the exceptional costs are simply a write off of players contracts. You use Bangura as an example. Now then does that mean we will simply release Bangura from his contract? No – me neither – so tell me if the full value of Bangura’s contract is written off but we are actually still paying wages – how do you think that is accounted for?

You also mention capital projects – what are these mythical projects and again where is the business case. As capital projects these will increase assets on the balance sheet.

And you say the rest will go on “reserves” – now what are these reserves for. Are Celtic now becoming a bank?

AKWB1888 – I dont believe Celtic are doing anything illegal here – but its immensly dissapointing that they chose to treat us this way. Its totally needless too. No-one is screaming for us to go crazy financially – but its feels contemptous to me to try this old “we still have some debt” trick yet again.

As for you who tell me that I shouldnt be raising this on the eve of a big game (Hamiltontim amongst others). Why the hell not? It isnt going to make any difference to tomorrow night and I am not really ranting about it – to be honest I had a wry chuckle when I read Paul’s post. And in any case the real question is why did Celtic announce it the day before the big game? To the more intelligent among you – yep thats right – no one will pay to much attention to the detail – just the good news highlights!

Tomorrow will take care of itself but come another dissappointing transfer window in the summer – where we take in probably around £10M more than we spend, this spectre of debt will suddenly be headline news.

Anyway – got my half day sorted tomorrow to allow me to get back from Edinburgh, quick change, hit the pub and relax and enjoy the game.

Really looking forward to it – get all your vocal chords ready and tuned :)

The difference is that Juve have been punished.

If the same fraternity are in charge next season as Peter Lawwell desires then Celtic should bank the money. Our inertia to counteract the overt corruption of those that favour Old Firm and our attitude towards the Green Brigade will see a drop in income along with the already agreed increased trickle down due to league construction. Luckily we can sell Gary and Victor and hopefully have CL income but I repeat due to an anticipated fall in income especially attendances and retail we should bank the money.
