Celtic interims stunning-ageddon

858

Champions League football this season has enabled Celtic to achieve a remarkable set of interim financial results for the period 1 June 2012 to 31 December 2012.  Turnover was up 71%, a stunning-ageddon figure.

Ticket sales and other stadium revenue was up marginally, to £18.598m (2011: £16.446m), as was merchandising, to £9.847m (2001: £7.821m), both reflecting the ancillary value of Champions League participation, but the big increase was in TV and media income, £21.613m, up from a paltry £5.004m in the same period of 2011.

The only amber flag on the results was the increase in operating costs, from £28.388m to £36.961m, a 30% increase, which will reflect higher bonus payments for Champions League participation, higher wage costs and a more general increase in running costs.

Pre-tax profit came in at £14.944m, leaving net bank debt at £130k.

These are fantastic results from a well-run club which will enable ever-more solid foundations to be laid.  We are also one of the few clubs to qualify for the latter stages of the Champions League AND to do so profitably. Congratulations to all.

I’m participating on an online STV preview at 18:30 tonight, looking forward to the small challenge ahead.  Hope you can join us.

The event is part of our 125 4 125 campaign – central to reinvigorating the charitable spirit which is part of the club we love. It will be a family occasions, tickets are available at £10 for adults and £5 for children. The night has been organised by several fans working in conjunction with the people at Celtic Charity, so please do your best to support this great occasion. Individual tickets or tables are available, details here.

I’ll see you there.

Liverpool fans and stewards around us were brilliant when I was there in our run to Seville. Had bags of time for them since then.

  2. Sandman – thank you – glad you are impressed.

Auldheid – I GENERALLY agree with the club’s approach to player trading. However there are times when the club will need simple strengthening and/or investment. Perhaps to qualify for the CL we may need to spend a few million on a missing link player. Celtic wont do that and will readily quote debt at us as a mantra.

    ============================

In making a judgement on whether to invest in a player the same kind of prudent thinking will hold sway in that the cost of a transfer fee and wages over three years will be balanced against a) it not working out – Gravesen/Juhino (in fact when was the last big buy we made since 2008 that has worked out?) against the CL income produced and the impact on the wage structure and from that the performances of others.

The kind of player who will guarantee a return tends to come at the premium end of the market where competition for them is greater and so cost. However if Celtic were presented with a Lubo or Henrik type signing I think they would cut your arm off but how will they know?

Its not the money its what you get for the money and some of what you get, if it is ready to sign up, can come with other factors that in the interests of balance make the risk not worth taking.

    ++++++++++++++++++++

Now then – what are these capital investments you are mentioning – all sounds laudable but where is the business plan? Perhaps Celtic can use all of those exceptional costs and reserves they create every year to do it?

    ——————————–

I never mentioned any capital investments what I said was it would be interesting to see if the mind that was used to watching every penny spent to keep costs down could adjust to making investment decisions that would bring more money in.

I saw a reference to improving the environs but doubt that there will be sufficient a cash rich population around CP to provide a regular income over and above from match days although there is room for improvement.

I would be investing in legal costs to challenge the 3pm broadcasting ban and the EPL cartel, if only to get compensation for being kept out but opening the door to a UK league and be talking to the other Scottish clubs in meantime about providing all games to their fans at the same price whether that was at the game or on the TV/PC/Mobile.

I’d push for one big stadium in Glasgow (CP)and play our league games at one of the new Commonwealth stadiums with capacity of around 25,000 (the rest watching remotely) with the one stadium used for CL nights and internationals and rent office space to the SFA.

The Rangers, if they survive and have any sense, would sell Ibrox and secure their own smaller capacity stadium, do the same and we would all live happilly ever after ;)

  4. When Brendan Rogers mover to Liverpool, I honestly thought after what he done with Swansea, he would do good things in his new job.

Sometimes you can’t make a silk purse from a sows ear.

  5. Im glad Celtic have powerful interim results.

Management and players are to be congratulated on their European successes. It was FAR from certain we would qualify for Europe (Europa League or Champions League) so the clubs strategy is to be commended.

However it was a close run thing (not that it wasn’t deserved). We could quite easily have failed in our European quest with the consequent financial implications & perhaps the need to accept one of the Norwich offers for Hoops to balance the books.

The point I am trying to make is although we are pretty certain to be SPL champs for the next 4/5 years at least we are NOT certain to compete in the CL annually. The Scottish co-efficient means we may NEVER gain automatic entry to CL group stages.

This uncertainty means there will be little change to our financial strategy. Unlike others I am not surprised at the 30% rise in costs. Celtic pay as reward for success on the field, particularly in Europe. This is not unlike the days of The Lions where the bonuses for field success were the cherry on the cake for that generation. It also shortened the gap between their renumeration and those higher basic salaries paid in the English Football League of the time.

I highlight this situation because some posters, in my view, have gone a little OTT with the results. It is not difficult to imagine not qualifying for next seasons CL and how different this blog would read exactly 12 months from now.

We need to remain realistic unless & until we have access to guaranteed additional funds on an annual basis.

I don’t fully agree with NegAn’s assessmenst but it is good to have a critical analysis to help maintain vigilance.

  6. If titles are stripped from oldco for all the posturing about fighting it – just what the feck could sevco do about it? How can you appeal a punishment on another club?

Yet more evidence for stupid sevconians that they are following a new club. Stoopid stoopiid sevconians ….

I would really like to know howmuch security and police cost the club, so as far as that goes I’d like to see a bit more detail in the books.

I think we might go 4-3-3 tomorrow night …

I think Neil has tested it a few times but I reckon juve will go thier normal 4-5-1

Lenny I suspect will play two disciplined full backs in the shape of lustig and Mathews … To horse balls into the channels and missing out the juve 5 man mid completely ..

Your dilemma is a good one, but within reason offenders should be helped and encouraged towards rehabilitation once their forfeit has been paid.

What better example to encourage Juve’s complete rehabilitation than a full house at Celtic Park tomorrow night?

Irrespective of Celtic’s disadvantages, the club represents the Gold Standard in modern football, whether in terms of honest sporting pursuit on the pitch, support around it or standards off it.

What better aspiration for a penitant Juvenile?

  13. Delighted at how well our club is doing on and off field .

I think the results today are spectacular, but you are correct, they may be a one off, CL is not guaranteed next year. Therefore I expect the club to continue to be run as we are, sensibly, not speculating to accumulate, just paying out what we can afford, and not expecting the same results next year. Budget for life in the SPL, invest well on young upcoming talent, seems to be working at the moment.

Auldheid – i was with your plan until they survived………

It is by no means a certainty and their attachment to Ibrox with its repair and running costs is something they really ought to get real about.

If you spend a few million the wages required will bust our structure.

The top player will, i take it,be already established,so the wages

will be likewise. To gamble on low cost signings with potential rather

than go for one big one that may not perform & cost the club a fortune

    is sound economic sence.

I trust you feel the same as I do about Celtic. No problem.

I always thought a mantra was a repetitive thing like “Ommmm” or “Show me ra deeds!”.
