Celtic leave Europe meekly

The most frustrating thing about last night’s meek exist from the Europa League is just how self-inflicted it was.  After previous European defeats I criticised Brendan Rodgers tactics, but no tactics in the world will help a team which cannot defend a corner kick or stop a shot from 24 yards into the middle of the goal.

I saw the Hamilton Accies keeper recently concede a similar goal to the second Dorus de Vries failed to keep out of the net last night.  At any level of the game, it was an unforgiveable error.  For years Celtic were imperious at defending corner kicks.  Now, also for years, it has been a persistent weakness.

Celtic have been far too weak at the back this season – not just in Europe.  After the game Brendan suggested we lacked the experience necessary to play in such environments – certainly one of our issues.  Hopefully the addition of Marvin Compper will bring sufficient authority to allow our youthful defenders to progress.

By contrast, Zenit were a study in the art of defence, even at home against a team from Scotland.  We were unable to land a glove on them until the contest was effectively over.  Substitutes Tom Rogic and Scott Sinclair both made things happen, but it is difficult to isolate their effect from Zenit’s own tiredness.

This was a European tie which got away.  Sure, Zenit are  better resourced than us, but on the showing over both legs, I’m not convinced they are significantly better than Anderlecht – who played us off Celtic Park but had their own troubles when we visited Belgium in September.

Lots of excuses, Celtic, but we really should have done better.

    Sorry for the delay. With regards defending at corners, I would imagine the defence should always outnumber the attacking team, leaving at least one guy to attack the ball.

    Whatever system we play , we can only play it as well as the players we have. Players that don’t defend zones well may still let in more goals defending man to man.

    I’m posting when its calm to avoid being accused of being an entitled bun by those who would need a Satnav to find CP. Sometimes management is more than tactics and it comes down to motivation. There was not an ounce of self belief in any of our players that we could get a result last night. And If we have a defence coach he should be immediately replaced by someone who understands the basics in defending.

    16 years ago there was a blizzard and I was on the way to the maternity ward with a waters broken wife.

     

     

    A few anxious moments thru a long night and Connor entered the world at 7.15 am.

     

     

    After all my exertions I headed off to get a can of ginger and was stuck behind a numpty who couldn’t work the dispenser.

     

     

    I offered assistance and as he turned around I froze.

     

     

    It was Henrik Larsson.

     

     

    After I got his drink I walked back along the corridor and we exchanged a few words. I weighed up asking him to come and see my new born against his anxiousness at getting back to Magdalena who didn’t have long to go to their happy event.

     

     

    I decided against doing so. Shook hands, thanked him and wished him well.

     

     

    Got back to the wife and she said I looked like I’d seen a ghost.

     

     

    “Naw just Henrik Larsson!”

     

     

    I’d resolved to call ‘Connor’ Henrik Bobo after that but under serious threat from the wife, backed down at the registrars office.

     

     

    Happy 16th Connor.

    Gordon 64 . Basics in defending mean man marking at set pieces. Stay close. Grabbing shirts , obstructing, , aggressive defending. All allowed before the corner is kicked/ taken . John Kennedy is not responsible for a lack of commitment or aggression from a central defender who thinks that he’s doing Celtic a favour by being there. Simonovic is not the real deal despite being talented. Attitude speaks volumes. Tierney, Broony & Ajer have it most weeks. Wee Jamsie has grown into the shirt . The Griff & Craig Gordon appreciate being Celtic players . Others do as well . Not all but enough. The problem , defensively , or tactically doesn’t lie with John Kennedy. He doesn’t have the final say. Brendan does, and Brendan will sort it . Why ? Because he cares . KTF.

    G64- Kolo Toure has the best CV at anyone at CP, why is he not in the senior coaching staff? John Kennedy , we all know his tragic history, but IMO CFC have done very well by him.The defence has been an issue for a few seasons now, a change might help HH

    I know where you coming from. From a professional performance 2 weeks ago to Thursday nights schoolbhoy performance is one rollercoaster! Thunder road hit the nail on the head when he was talking about the average age of the team being around 22 excluding Doris the Duck. We miss experience and the old head at times.

    I managed it, with Caitlyn Elizabeth Larsson Martin, but Henrik had to score and he obliged 6 minutes to go and a penalty as well, at a 2-0 victory in Perth in October 2000.
