Celtic leave Europe meekly

839

The most frustrating thing about last night’s meek exist from the Europa League is just how self-inflicted it was.  After previous European defeats I criticised Brendan Rodgers tactics, but no tactics in the world will help a team which cannot defend a corner kick or stop a shot from 24 yards into the middle of the goal.

I saw the Hamilton Accies keeper recently concede a similar goal to the second Dorus de Vries failed to keep out of the net last night.  At any level of the game, it was an unforgiveable error.  For years Celtic were imperious at defending corner kicks.  Now, also for years, it has been a persistent weakness.

Celtic have been far too weak at the back this season – not just in Europe.  After the game Brendan suggested we lacked the experience necessary to play in such environments – certainly one of our issues.  Hopefully the addition of Marvin Compper will bring sufficient authority to allow our youthful defenders to progress.

By contrast, Zenit were a study in the art of defence, even at home against a team from Scotland.  We were unable to land a glove on them until the contest was effectively over.  Substitutes Tom Rogic and Scott Sinclair both made things happen, but it is difficult to isolate their effect from Zenit’s own tiredness.

This was a European tie which got away.  Sure, Zenit are  better resourced than us, but on the showing over both legs, I’m not convinced they are significantly better than Anderlecht – who played us off Celtic Park but had their own troubles when we visited Belgium in September.

Lots of excuses, Celtic, but we really should have done better.

  1. Not yet two years in the job…

In May 2016, Brendan Rodgers was announced as Deila’s successor, becoming the eighteenth full-time manager of Celtic.[67][68] His first season saw the team go on a long unbeaten run in domestic competitions, during which time the club won their 100th major trophy, defeating Aberdeen 3–0 in the League Cup Final in November 2016,[69] and clinched their sixth successive league title in April 2017 with a record eight league games to spare.[70] Celtic finished their league campaign undefeated (with a record 106 points), the first time a Scottish top-flight side had done so since 1899.[71]. On 27 May 2017, Celtic won their fourth treble by defeating Aberdeen 2–1 in the Scottish Cup final. This resulted in Brendan Rodgers following Jock Stein and Martin O’Neill as treble winning Celtic managers, as well as securing an unprecedented domestic season unbeaten.[72] On 4 November 2017, Rodgers led Celtic to a 4–0 victory over St Johnstone. This victory meant Celtic were unbeaten for their last 63 domestic games and surpassed Celtic’s own 100-year-old British record for the longest unbeaten run in professional football, which was held by Willie Maley at 62.[73] Celtic eventually extended this unbeaten run to 69 games, before finally losing to Hearts.[74] On 26 November 2017, Rodgers won his fourth trophy in a row as manager as Celtic beat Motherwell 2–0 in the 2017 Scottish League Cup Final. Rodgers became the first manager in the club’s history to win his first four domestic trophies.[75]

  2. Considerate CQNer just informed me that,on music night, there’s a 3- hour OGWT special with Whisperin’ Bob on at 9pm tonight on BBC4.

Wonder if he’ll acknowledge that his music snobbery, especially in the face of punk, is the reason the show disappeared. He had already described the mighty Roxy as ‘style over substance’ and punk precursors the NY Dolls as ‘ mock rock’!

This from a man who had described Bad Company in the mid-seventies as ‘the best around’!! Must have been their sheer inventiveness!

Anyway, I want DB ‘Queen Bitch’, Roxy ‘Do the Strand’, Dr Feelgood ‘Roxette’, The Dan ‘Reelin’ in the years’, Ramones ‘Mama’s boy’, Talking Heads ‘Psycho Killer’, Tim Buckley ‘Dolphins’, Stones ‘It’s Only Rock n Roll’, Elvis Costello & The Attractions ‘Blood and Chocolate’, and die gnädigen Schmidts ‘Big Mouth Strikes Again’ to be going on with!

    Oh, aye, and SAHB, ‘Neeeeeext!’

  3. Eric Black oan anaw noo!

Jock Brown & Fergus’s spy in the camp!

    Who widda funk it ?

The days of wine & roses, right enough.

Fergus’s Celtic Park, “where snakes in the grass are absolutely free!”

    Aye.

    SHEIK YERBOUTI.

I knew that, I think the Winners got a bye into the second round, it’s another record Celtic set, we were the first team who had to play in the first round.

*If my memory serves me well there was either a country kicked out of the tournament or a new one added which meant we were added to it.

The first game was the day the QE2 was launched and we were very poor in the 1st half going 2 down and left the field at half time tae a chorus of boos, aye even the Lisbon Lions were booed off the pitch, this was 4 days after losing our first game as European Champions at hades where big provan broke his leg trying tae break wee ten thirtys.

A different side came out in the 2nd half, same players though, and we hammered them, the Buzz Bomb pulled one back but bad luck coupled with the goalie having the game of his life cost us.

2 weeks later with the Bear in for our Lisbon game winner we again pounded them but bizarre decisions by the Italian ref (wonder if he was an Inter fan) saw Bobby Murdoch sent off for a second yellow, he threw the ball away in frustration, 2 minutes later Lemon again pulled 1 back only for a very good Yogi goal chalked off after the goalie, who had a stormer in the first game, dropped the ball at his feet. They did catch us on the break scoring in the last minute but went out in the next round to Gornik Zabrze.

Meanwhile we come home and 3 days later gub joint top of the League with deidco 4-0 at Parkheid and then 4 days later it was Mortons turn in the LC Semi 7-1 (5 up at half time) another 3 days later we went tae Firhill and won 5-1 with the Buzz Bomb getting 4 against 7 past niven lol and finishing the month off in style with victories over racing club, the steelmen (another 4) and then Dundee in a free scoring LC Final (5-3) which we coasted with the scoreline flattring them and twisted face davidshun the mitby.

So there you go after losing tae deidco, kiev and drawing with stirling albion by the end of September we went on a 7 game run in October tieing with kiev at the start of the month scoring 26 goals, winning the 1st leg of the Intercontinental Club Cup and the LC for the 3rd season in a row.

If that team can do it, with a good Hibbee side, deidco and the Arabs progressing in the old UEFA Cup, so can the one we have now with poorer opposition at home.

  7. 1-0 FT, decent run out for Paddy, looks very rusty and struggled to beat the first man most of the time although showed some flashes of quality with his passing and link play. Aitchison looks quite good, some of his touches were sublime, still looks a bit on the small side though. Overall i thought it was a poor game, no real football to speak of, Celtic had the better of it by far but didn’t really impress.

    Firsti up Kiki Dee.

    Now Peter Frampton.

The Zenit blues are fading quickly.

I’ll have to agree with you there. You have a far better memory than me.

There was a bit of a furore at the time, and it may have been a team getting disqualified, that sort of rings a bell to me. But we can still claim another record.

  10. JAMESGANG on 23RD FEBRUARY 2018 12:03 PM

And that our play across this season has been a shadow of last. And that WITS would have support for his ‘Ronny out’ campaign if RD was overseeing this quality and style of Football.

*Ronny in his first season was cheated out of a treble by a durty goatshaggin breest baring brither of a former hun who had opted tae play for the black north and wear the sash his grampa wore.

Not too be content with denying us a blatant penalty and red carding the offender he also sent off big Craig for taking the last man out, that is the last man heading for the corner flag.

In his 2nd season we have big Efe sent off within 15 minutes of the SLC Semi while 1-0 up, after big Craig was fouled at the corner leading up tae it, then 2 ex-Celts figured prominently with Rocco Quinn scoring the winner and Scott Fox saving a LG penalty, oh aye and thopsnum was a happy mitby.

Moving ontae the semis of the SC and the same mitby is rewarded by being given this game, that was oor tea oot then, sevco’s second goal came from a throw-in that was originally, correctly, awarded from the linesman only for him who couldn’t see it properly and doing a collum and reversing, wrongly, the decision.

We didnae play that well it has to be said but it took a big Tam miskick at the penalty shoot out and the trailer trash in the hun section of the director’s box showed their true class by giving ours a GIRUY.

That and IMHO Ronny’s abysmal European record meant he had to do a Jim Reeves “he’ll have to go”. And his record in Europe was pure Raphael, even with the benefit of being awarded a bye through Legia’s FU he still managed tae mess up, however in saying that should the teachers pet Johansenn have scored when we were 2 up against Malmo and future world record fee for a defender not went missing for the goals conceded in both ties we would have went through.

However, he did give us 2 in a row as well as a League and LC double, similar to WTT.

So we bring in at great expense Brendan Rogers and he does bring us the elusive treble, but this season we are not firing on all cylinders so our back to back treble is at risk, but we are told it may be 2nd season syndrome and honest mistakes, we could have said the same about Ronny but too many wanted tae drive him tae the airport or Lerwick for the ferry.

Now I’m not putting Brendan down as it has been said he’s here mainly for Europe and group stages in his first season as well as Europe after Christmas in this one is not to be scoffed at.

But his overall record in Europe with Liverpool and us isnae much tae write home about and we have suffered our worst defeats ever in our history with him in charge, I’ll never forget watching us in when we almost threw away a 3 goal lead against Hapoel Be’er Sheva, wisnae hiding behind the couch just chose tae watch Roma/Porto instead.

Anyway, that’s all behind us now so let’s wish, hope and pray for 3 points on Sunday, anything less does not bear thinking about.

  11. viewfaethewindae on

Celtic have been two good defenders away from a decent European team since Pierce O’Leary graced this parish, little has changed in 30+ years out with the O’Neill years.

Last night was exactly what most of us expected.

It was explained that the doorman of one of the record publishing houses were played the best of the songs that had been submitted each week.

The doormen were older gentleman who were dressed in grey.

If they remembered the tune enough to whistle it after one play,it was deemed as a potential hit.

A bit ironic as TOGWT was the alternative to the pop hit culture.

  13. Hello lads

Just in, so haven’t read back.

But Seamus Larsson is now home and already part of the family (I was leaning towards Seamus, while Liam in Toronto insisted on Larsson being part of the name, so he got both).

For the first time in a while, the House feels like a home again.

    HH

  14. Someone (sorry I didn’t see the name) asked earlier about players who might be available to Celtic in the £3-5 million bracket and available in our wage budget. Clearly I have no knowledge of individual player wages, so I turned to Football Manager (I know, but there isn’t anything else I am aware of) as a proxy.

Using that, the highest paid players are Scott Brown, Dembele, and Sinclair on £25k a week. Lustig is next on £24k then the Griff on £18k. So I took £20k as an upper limit.

    Suggested players:

Fabio Cacitiori of Chievo: a 31 year old right back with good experience in Serie A. Can fill a gap for a few years until Ralston is ready or we need to find a replacement. Can also play left back, meaning we can rest KT. FM suggests he is paid £9.5k per week so, even if we had to double his wages to entice him to Scotland, within the £20k wage ceiling.

Next up a younger player: Francesco Vicari of SPAL. A centre back aged 23. He’s apparently on £11k per week. Would probably cost £5m minimum, but young and fits the develop and sell model. He and Ajer would be the partnership of the future, should we be able to keep them!

That’s the defence sorted, so behind them in goal Josip Posavec of Palermo. 21 year old, good experience, would be expensive but again sell on value. Currently on £8k per week.

We need to protect the defence better than we do and Brown needs help while Eboue is too inconsistent yet. Two options here:

Phillip Bargfrede of Werder Bremen. Probably hasn’t had the career he should have had due to injuries but solid enough. On £14.5k per week at the age of 28. Chance of trophies, regular first team football and Europe may be enough to entice him.

The second option is a bit unusual. Alex Song (former Arsenal and Barca) is available on a free as out of contract. At his last club in Russia was on £50k, so we’d need to be creative. Offer the £20k per week max and, as there is no fee, an additional £3m to cover the shortfall over a two year contract. He’s 30-31 now so two years would be the max.

And a bonus suggestion: Phillip Wollscheid, former Stoke, available on a free. Was on £13k at his last club Metz, so within budget. He’s still only 28, so he and Commper would buy time for Ajer and Vicari to settle in…

That would be c£20m for 6 players who would improve us…wages would be tough though – £120k per week equates to around £6.2m per year, so there goes the £30m in the bank…
