Celtic long term land dividends

1140

As we reported yesterday, Celtic have been busy buying up land around the periphery of the stadium for many years. The club managed to get the deal to buy land behind the Jock Stein Stand done before the mineral seam running below it was discovered. I hear the excavation rights are estimated to be worth £50m to Celtic, who bought the land for £3m in January 2009 with money which had been earmarked to buy Stephen Fletcher. Hibernian thought the Fletcher deal was done but Celtic pulled out at the last minute when the land deal became available due to an emergency cash requirement at the Council, who needed to build schools to educate children arriving in the city from Eastern Europe.

Back then, when I asked why we weren’t signing Fletcher a senior source at the club told me, “We can only spend that £3m once and we need the land for burger vans and stuff.” Before kick-off, fans currently go off-premises to spend their money, cash that could be going to Celtic. Source added, “We’ll be able to buy a Fletcher every year with the catering income we’ll make from this land deal.”

Made sense at the time, makes more sense now.

That £50m is due to arrive in time to get the Co-op off our case and leave a substantial amount available to deal with what could be the first season we ever face Sevco- keeping them in their place.

Good luck to the Celtic fans based in North America ahead of the Féile on the weekend of 17-19 January. Events are based at The Plough & Stars, Philidelphia, include live music, a tour of the An Gorta Mor Memorial, a live Beyond the Waves broadcast and a Q&A with Celtic Youth Coach, Willie McNabb.

As I said in a later post mate, I actually met the guy and found him to be ok. For someone who played in the premiership he had a good knowledge of our game up here. It was in Bali and I think he was playing in Australia at the time, I can only talk about what I witnessed and heard from him and he seemed ok to me.

If i was asked is Turkey European or Asian? I would say European.

Turkey was historically known as the sick man of Europe during the last days of the Ottoman empire.

In fact 3% of it’s land mass falls on the European continent. That’s 3% more than the U.K.

Plus they play in the Euro championship take part in the champions league, Euro league…..oh and previous winners of Eurovision! ;)

  7. Whilst reading the updates on the game I have been reading my CQN Annual and I’m at page 157. It is good to see the Roll of Honour names and some of subscribers that you can identify with because of their posts.

On the article on Fergus and the many comments, I feel there is something missing. Fergus did brilliantly and that is one of the reasons we are so strong now. But not one person mentioned why he came. He came for one reason: to make money. He wasn’t some sort of patron saint that wanted to save Celtic: he was here to make money. That was his Raison D’être; and he walked away with something approaching £30M profit. That’s simply why everyone that bought shares, most not for profit reasons but for Celtic, lost most of their investment. Fergus didn’t lose his investment. He became even more fabulously wealthy.

  8. T4, I think he should also get games against packed defences, he has a physical presence that will intimidate SPFL defences. And if he plays for us, he has to get used to that too.

In which case there should be no need for an interdict/injunction.

  10. Enjoyed that performance tonight. It’s good to watch us playing with a good tempo, crisp passing and scoring a couple of really good goals.

What a difference it must be playing against opposition who don’t have 10 men behind the ball. That’s why patience must be shown to the new boys.

Our football is a different sport to them :–)

You sound as if you know what you are talking about.

If I “invested” £1000 in Celtic shares at the outset, and still own them, how much have I lost?

If I “invested” £1000 in Celtic shares at the outset, and sold them today what is my total “loss”?

Kennedy Street, St Kents and Parson Street. Downhill all the way! Enjoyed St Kents and the big yard for 45 a side football.

They have done very well in the last year or so and more than doubled in value at 76p each. For talking sake a 1000 shares would realise after expenses in the region of £700

Me too. Borrowed cash to buy them. Also had a clue of mates who bought shares at the time and then sold at a profit when they were needing cash.

I had same option but kept my shares.

Ernie – I thought the interdict stuff was to do with Sevco!

In this day and age, who’s too concerned about the top cop’s sexuality? Or has he allowed himself to be compromised?!

Agree with you but he made big money and every other person who held onto their shares have lost. It would have been probably easier just to hand him the money: it would have saved stockbrokers commission.

I also feel there are far more deserving candidates to have the North Stand named after them. You no doubt have your own pick. Mine: Jimmy McGrory, Sean Fallon, Neil Mochan, Billy McNeil, Jinky and John Clark. That’s for starters
