Celtic need to learn resuscitation methods

980

Celtic have lost in the game immediately after three of their previous four European games, shipping nine points which could be crucial in determining the destination of the championship, so it was not surprising they were below par for much of the game yesterday.  Fortunately, the Aberdeen goal came early enough to allow Celtic time to raise their game and respond.

How Celtic respond after European games will become even more crucial in the weeks ahead as they have visits to Motherwell, Dundee United and St Johnstone due after our next three Europa League games.  Any slim championship aspirations will be extinguished in these games if Celtic are unable to improve performance for the league challenge.

Ally McCoist is defying early predictions and grinding out impressive results for Rangers, who will seldom have started the league with such an impressive defensive record.  Six away wins from six games without conceding a goal is the kind of form it takes to win leagues.

Our more immediate challengers, Motherwell, dropped two points on Saturday, meaning we can go two points clear of them if we win our game in hand, however, the teams meet at Fir Park a week on Sunday (three days after Celtic play Rennes), in what looks like being a key game in our season.

West Ham supporters have voted overwhelmingly against signing serial spitter El Hadji Diouf.

The Senegalese striker could still end up a West Ham player if new Hammers boss Sam Allardyce has his way – although that will be against the wishes of the vast majority of supporters voting in a KUMB.com poll.

At the time of writing, just 11 per cent of readers to cast their vote have backed Allardyce’s moves to sign the former Bolton, Blackburn and Rangers forward, who almost sparked off a riot when spitting at West Ham fans during a Premiership match with Liverpool in 2002.

More than four in five polled voted against signing Diouf, whilst currently six per cent of voters remain undecided. To have your say, visit the poll thread on the KUMB forum.

I think I picked you up a wee bit wrongly there, I thought you were making a straight comparison between standard prices.

I agree more aggressive marketing would be good. I’m not sure about an across the board drop from the start of the season but I think that say “Buy 1, get 1 for 75%” or “buy 2 get 3rd free” could work.

I’d like a bit of a reward scheme for home cup tickets too eg buy 2 rounds, get 3rd free. It’s a bit of a gamble as we might not get 3 home cup ties in a season but it would incentivise people early on.

Also Premium Season tickets. My ticket is around £500. Offer me one at £650 that includes every home game regardless of competition. I’d hopefully save money in a European season, and the club would get more up front. It’s a gamble on my part, but one I’d definitely consider.

  5. Henrik’s Golden Boot (12:30): “Maybe if teams actually tried against them rather than sit back and take it, those stats might change.”

Your opponents only play as well as you allow them to play.

Rangers are currently on a run of 22 consecutive undefeated SPL games, with a record that reads:

    P 22 W 19 D 3 L 0 F 51 A 6 Pts 60 GD +45 C/S 17

They have won over 86% of those games, scoring 2.32 goals per game and conceding just 1 goal in around every 4 games, keeping a clean sheet in over 77% of games. They have won 91% of the available points

If we pro-rata this to a 38 games season their record would read:

    P 38 W 33 D 5 L 0 F 88 A 10 Pts 104 GD +78 C/S 29

This would beat Celtic’s records for most points, fewest goals conceded and fewest defeats and equal their record for most wins.

Meanwhile, Celtic have won just 2 of their last 5 SPL games, scoring 9 and conceding 10 goals, and picking up just 46.7% of the 15 available points.

The championship race is not yet over, but it will take something akin to Celtic’s 32 game unbeaten run in 2003/4 to make a fight of it. We have to match every Rangers win from now until the end of the season and beat them in each of the remaining three head-to-heads. And of course, we also have to win our game in hand.

It is a truly gargantuan task, and it will be a miracle if our players can achieve the authority, the consistency and the luck to pull it off.

As something of a formality I have voted No.

There is absolutely no evidence that, except when it suits them, will DD and PL ever listen to Celtic Fans.

For example, they were happy enough to listen when the fans gave their approval of the PL/NL road show that resulted in the appointment of a cheaply available rookie manager when what was needed was someone of credible to turn things around immediately. Someone who could do the trick like Walter did when he replaced PLG. We may not like THEM but occasionally it might do no harm to learn from THEM.

However, when the fans talk of serious signings it is rubber ear time.

If you doubt me, just wait and see.

Have never been a big fan of Sunday football, which is why when the Europa league game is a home game I would still prefer the game to be on the Saturday afternoon. Got the result yesterday after we picked up following Aberdeen’s goal. Too pedestrian for too long and too reliant on the referee after being fouled. If somebody commits a bad foul against us, say the one on Forrest four or five of our players should be right in about it. Let him know we don’t and won’t accept it. The main problem was the gap between the defence to midfield and then mid to the two forwards for much but not all the game. True, Ki got a goal from midfield, but Hooper was often stranded, and Stokes going wide for the ball. We miss Kriss Commons though, is he still suspended for that foul at Tynecastle?

How do you think they emerge from administration and why do you think they will emerge stronger?

I think that because reading between the lines of Whyte’s statements where he is adamant that liquidation is not possible it must mean he is the preferred creditor and therefore can dictate the terms.

First up how do they generate cash to clear even the £18M? Player sales, stadium sale and leaseback? Player sales, leave them weaker. Stadium sales and leaseback leaves them with increased fixed costs meaning they have to scale back elsewhere ie player wages.

Yes but the money is owed to their main shareholder and chairman. I expect him to use the event to scale back on everything which in his view at least is possible and then to be prepared to accept the rest of his dues in a timescale that will not hurt them.

Craig Whyte has already stated that they need to trim wages by £7M/season, if their costs go up more then that figure will need to increase accordingly. How do Rangers emerge stronger by trimming the wage bill by at least £7M/season.

Yes I’d be saying that too but they’ve got to compete and if they’re not going to compete why would he be doing it in the first instance.

If you can come up with concrete answers to that, can you please put yourself forward for PL’s job.

    No thank you.

Exactly as I and any right minded football fan would call it. The stats don’t lie.

If you take the green tints off it’s obvious a miracle is required. We have not been ‘robbed’ or been unlucky in many games. We have lacked the qualities you allude to.

I said at the start of the season that we had a big task as they strengthened and we are weaker than last season.

I have to say I expected it to be closer and never imagined we’d be so far off the pace.

The galling thing is it NEVER had to be like this..

    4 seasons same mistake.

My guess is the gap will widen as they are gathering a winning momentum will we are showing no real sig of improvement.

I keep coming back to it … But PL is our problem.

Also can’t believe how gullible we are as a support..best demonstrated by the swallowing of McFadden by many on the eve of the AGM..and then the ‘everything is going to be fine because Rangers are going bust’ brigade.

Wakey wakey.. We still need to get past Motherwell .. Holy moly!

  13. Udinese seem to be able to make fantastic profits in the transfer market. Good for them. One wee question: how many of the players they bring from outside the EU would we be allowed to bring in? Many fewer, I suspect. Italy, like Portugal, Spain and Belgium, seem to have much looser immigration rules than Britain has.

  14. A wee thought for all the obsessed and optimistic.

Assuming that THEY do implode, will DD and PL have the wit or the will to take advantage of it.

112 millions euros profit thanks to scouting system that’s good business for the club!

I said about passive scouting becouse can’t believe that El Kaddouri, Cha or Majstorovic were results of real searching. Something tells me their CV’s were on Celtic desk before somebody from Glasgow made a job.

    Re Udinese.

Last transfer window they were trying to buy Legia Warsaw defensive modfielder Ariel Borysiuk. He is 20 years old, who made debut when 16. Played many games for Legia so far. If my memory serves me well they offered circa 2 millions euros but the player said “No” after we qualified to UEFA Europa League.

Udinese are well known for that model – they have recouped some incredible transfer fees over the years.

They have the advantage that any player who succeeds at Udinese (ie in SerieA) is undoubtedly ‘proven’ by that stage. I feel passionately that Celtic should ramp their scouting up ahead of almost everything else (apart from Sports Science perhaps – i would ensure the entire playing staff is at at maximum athletic potential) but I have to admit that i am sure we would not be able to demand massive transfer fees, as the SPL is seen as a third rate league, so players are perceived as not being proven on the big stage. (Regular CL football would help us in this respect).

if you are interested in the Udinese model, it is well covered in this excellent article:

    That cannot happen.

He needs to get his dues now, and in full, so the administrator knows how much is left in the pot for the unsecured creditors. Don’t buy the sugar coated PR version of administration currently being peddled. It is far far from certain they would have the ability to generate enough cash to exit administration.

Anyway he is going to prepack it so this is a moot point.

  20. \o/ Hugo Z Hackenbush \o/ on

I am very concerned about the state of our club, both at boardroom level and on the playing side.

Yesterday’s performance was every bit as flat as the Killie game. The team is clearly not performing with too many players off form, but what really concerns me is that the players are not putting in the effort, they are not pressing the ball or closing down opponents. The amount of space given to Aberdeen in the lead up to their goal was disgraceful.

I watched Ki amble back from a failed attack on several occasions yesterday while his opposing player charged upfield and Ki wasn’t the only one.

I watched the management team sitting back in the dug out, seemingly accepting of our lack of commitment.

I agree that the board and Lawell have failed to make the improvements needed in the team but lack of effort – that’s down to the coaching staff and the players. The bottom line is we should be strong enough to easily see off every team but one, 9 times out of 10 in the SPL. At the moment, I’m not confident of success against anyone.

Your post is in line with my thinking. :-)

The Newcastle link (50% offer) shows a serious effort by them to get ST sales back off the ground following the past few years of discontent. 10 years ago you couldn’t get a ticket at St. James for love nor money.

I feel the Club have missed an opportunity to reward (call it utilise) the commitment of long-term ST holders. We are already sold on attending home games and would be 1st to take-up incentive schemes.

Mentioned it previously to Auldheid – something along the lines of a letter from CFC to ST holder:

We note you have been a ST holder for 10/15/20/25 years – please find enclosed 2 tickets (or adult + child) for X home game by way of a thank you for your continued support.

If you got such an offer – CFC know the tickets are most likely to go to the likes of your son/ grandson, nephew/ niece – someone with a family connection to the Club. They enjoy the match-day experience and who knows – they are more likely to purchase an ST because of the family link and the sales job we (the ST holder) would do on them.

I stupidly watched ‘them’ on Sunday and I honestly can’t understand how they keep winning.

Hearts dominated most of the game but ‘they’ have a horrible knack of hitting on the break.

It’s the speed of their attacks that is winning them games, they go from one end of the pitch to the other in about 4-5 passes. We need to learn this and quickly. Their midfielders all bomb forward in a wave of attack that panicks the opposition defence. We tend to over work the ball and give defences time to re-group.

But… I honestly don’t think that we are as bad as we are all making out.
