Celtic need to learn resuscitation methods

980

Celtic have lost in the game immediately after three of their previous four European games, shipping nine points which could be crucial in determining the destination of the championship, so it was not surprising they were below par for much of the game yesterday.  Fortunately, the Aberdeen goal came early enough to allow Celtic time to raise their game and respond.

How Celtic respond after European games will become even more crucial in the weeks ahead as they have visits to Motherwell, Dundee United and St Johnstone due after our next three Europa League games.  Any slim championship aspirations will be extinguished in these games if Celtic are unable to improve performance for the league challenge.

Ally McCoist is defying early predictions and grinding out impressive results for Rangers, who will seldom have started the league with such an impressive defensive record.  Six away wins from six games without conceding a goal is the kind of form it takes to win leagues.

Our more immediate challengers, Motherwell, dropped two points on Saturday, meaning we can go two points clear of them if we win our game in hand, however, the teams meet at Fir Park a week on Sunday (three days after Celtic play Rennes), in what looks like being a key game in our season.

    PHILVIS RETURNS

I just missed a really important part of that post, most unlike me.

Why are you shopping in SPAR?

I thought you were above such things,at the very least you would send out the hired help to do that.

Just canny imagine you with a SPAR bag,WAITROSE,aye, mibbes SAINSBURY at a push.

You trying to keep in touch wi yer roots?

  2. I find it remarkable that many of you keep missing the point.

We are caught in a vicious cycle of our own making.

We refuse to invest in the team so the following happens:

    – We dont buy players good enough

    – We buy in bulk every year hoping one of two players make it

    – We therefore create players who arent good enough (and quite a few of them)

    – We therefore have unsettled teams and lots of players surplus to requirements

    – The team fails to settle early in the season because our managers cant figure out who to play etc and there is constantly loads of new players in the team

    – We then complain and say we need to clear out the deadwood – and we go through the same cycle again

    – This close season we went one better and completely rested on our laurels on a team that didnt win the league and we will sell anything that makes us money

I would add to this that we choose managers not on ability but cost.

All this angst about individual players is pointless. ALL of the problems are created by a Board determined to protect their profit.

All of your ire should be reserved for our Billionaire owner (who wants to make money from his investment) and a CEO rewarded only on financial results.

Its all needless and short sighted and yet some of you still stick your heads in the sand

  3. The Honest Mistake(Sickened) 15:21 I can,t believe you said we have,nt abig enough squad. Jeez oh we have the biggest squad in the SPL just not enough quality. I accept we have had more than our fair share of injuries. Hail Hail Hebcelt

    Even more FIFA corruption!

I’m looking forward to Wednesday morning in Brasilia when I testify to the Senate’s Education, Culture and Sports Committee about FIFA corruption – and Ricardo Teixeira (10.00, October 24, 2011)

I have new disclosures about Blatter’s attempts to suppress the report of the criminal investigation by Investigative Magistrate Thomas Hildbrand into him, Teixeira and Havelange.

Prosecutor backs request to publish Zug Report

If Blatter and the other two would drop their legal actions, we could be reading it the next day. But that would force his resignation from FIFA. Sooner or later, inevitably, that will be his legacy.

There was no truth in Blatter’s statement on June 24, 2010 that he was “cleared” by the investigation. That lie has angered Swiss officials and perhaps encouraged them last week to rule that the report should be published “in the public interest.”

    Tricky Ricky’s Sewer Rats

Lurking in Brasilia’s sewers will be Teixeira’s lawyers, hoping to leap out and serve legal papers on me.

Tricky Ricky is suing me for comments I made when World Cup star, now Congressman, Romario interviewed me for his website. Now that Federal Police are investigating my disclosures, Tricky may find himself in a different court – the criminal one.

Thanks to everybody who sent congratulations to me and to Jens Weinreich for winning the respected 2011 Play the Game prize for Sports Investigative Journalism. There’s still time to send more!

Sadly, Blatter’s new media-massager Walter De Gregorio and his darkly handsome aide Bernd Fisa haven’t found time yet to add their congratulations. But they have been busy persuading gullible reporters that Sepp really, really, really wants reform.

Blatter could follow today’s advice from Germany’s Zeit – and appoint me to his FIFA reform committee! Don’t hold your breath.

  6. Celtic make £10,000 donation to Poppy Scotland

By: Newsroom Staff on 24 Oct, 2011 12:32

CELTIC Charity Fund, the charitable arm of Celtic Football Club today presented a donation of £10,000 to the work of Poppy Scotland.

The Club’s donation will be used to support ex-Servicemen and women across Scotland in a variety of ways, including treatment and rehabilitation for those injured while serving.

As we look ahead to Remembrance Sunday, Poppy Scotland will this week launch the 2011 Scottish Poppy Appeal. Celtic is pleased to kick-off this fundraising activity with this substantial donation.

Celtic Chief Executive Peter Lawwell said: “As we approach Remembrance Sunday next month, we remember the victims on all sides of all conflicts. Many people from all walks of life have entered the Services, and indeed, we all remember the contribution which so many Celtic players made during both World Wars.

“We are pleased to make this donation which will hopefully assist many people in Scotland dealing with devastating injuries.

“We understand fully the tragedy of conflict and the wider effects which this brings, which is why we are also pleased to support War Child, the global charity which cares for the child victims of war in places such as Afghanistan, Iraq and across Africa.”

Ian McGregor, Chief Executive of Poppy Scotland said: “We are extremely grateful to Celtic Football Club for their continued support of the Scottish Poppy Appeal. This generous donation will enable us to continue to deliver our life-changing work for Scotland’s Armed Forces community.

“As well as continuing to fund therapy, housing and retraining for veterans, we are also hoping to introduce short breaks for the families of Service personnel who are away on active duty.

“As we indicated last year we feel that after three very successful years of the poppy shirt initiative with the SPL, we wanted to work with each club individually to develop a range of new activities. Today is just one example of how the clubs are getting behind the Appeal this year and we look forward to building further on the excellent relationship we have with Celtic, and the other 11 clubs, in the coming weeks.”

Some good points – But (and my head is not in the sand) the board have managed our club better than most companies and definately better than 90% of football clubs

BUT – that does not mean they are beyond critisism

Your point about buying a lot of cheap players is well made

We all know we should be spending £4-5 million on a decent centre forward and the same again

    on a decent Centre Half

You also make a good point about PL getting a bonus when we make money – REGARDLESS OF HOW THE TEAM PERFORM

BUT BUT BUT – if Moyes was our manager or someone like him with same exact same squad as we have today,

would we be in a better position than we are now – would we have a better chance of winning the league

In my opinion the answer is yes

Consequently its not just about the board

What’s the odds Celtic have done this to further embarress them.

  12. There have been plenty of chairman in football who have seen success at their club down to the brilliance of football management in the dressing room, it is surprising that some Celtic supporters need reminding of that

  13. Celtic FC through PL have looked to gain some “positive” publicity for the forthcoming Poppy appeal,

this “positive” publicity was done at the risk of alienating (once again) some of the Celtic Support,

Im really loathe to become embroiled in the annual CQN Poppy Debate, my feelings are as last year and as the year before that, the Poppy IMO is a political symbol, it is a symbol that rightly or wrongly offends some of the Celtic Support, it is also a symbol that some within the Support will have links with,

    each to their own.

At a time when Celtic FC are looking to cleanse the support of any political chants/flags etc it is unfortunate that the Board have taken this opportunity to use the Charity Fund for a publicity stunt, and lets make no bones about it, this is a publicity stunt.

I look forward to Mr Lawell on behalf of the Board making a similar donation to Amnesty International or such like.

  18. weeminger – is the point you are making that DD is not a Billionaire or that he isnt the single owner? Either way I would suggest you are splitting hairs (and we might end up talking about FACTS the way the huns do).

As for the huns – its yet to be proven whether they have assembled a squad illegally – but they have clearly done so outwith their means. Their “reward” is coming (very soon). I look forward to that day – but Celtic shouldnt act solely in reaction to Rangers – we should have a clear ambitious strategy to allow us to spend responsibly while remembering that we are a football team and that football results are what matters.

67 Eurpopean Cup Winners – I agree with you only to the point that we havent spent completely outwith our means and we are therefore not in immediate threat of administration). But as per always we have gone to the other extreme – where we are simply refusing to even try and compete. We have forgotten we are a football club. I would be slightly more aligned to the board if we had lost the league narrowly once but then kept winning – but we are facing down 4 in a row and what we can see clearly is that PL and co dont learn from their mistakes. That is a sure sign of incompetence in my opinion.

I see the poppy debate is re-emerging for its annual showdown. Its is interesting that this trap gets layed every year. I was in the states for the last two weeks and the sychophancy around troops etc is actually alarming. If I was a member of the armed forces I would feel very uncomfortable with all this. However my general view is to wear the poppy and respect what our forces have done for us. Poppy facism is however now rife and is alarming. I have no problem with Celtic’s donation – but we should all feel comfortable with the club being able to donate whilst elements of our support do not want to participate in wearing of poppy’s etc – thats a grown up way to deal with differences of opinion.

Admittedly, i didn’t see that much of the horribles match on Sunday, this was due to the fact that i was in Failte pre-match and it was decided that we would rather watch the Manchester derby after they went 1-0 up. Call it paranoia on my part or just real disappointment that we look a shadow of last season’s team, we now face an uphill struggle in the league, but i will continue to support the team, as i’m sure we all will do.
