Celtic should appeal to Uefa to change processes, fudge doughnuts

879

I’m not convinced that any meeting of minds between Celtic and Legia Warsaw to allow the latter to take the place of the former in the Champions League play-off round would be recognised by Uefa.  Having researched as thoroughly as possible, I’ve found no precedent for such an arrangement to be invoked.

It would, therefore, probably be safe for Celtic to take the high moral ground and acquiesce with Legia, but that would be a cheap shot at being generous, Celtic have no intentions of becoming involved, whether they have the opportunity or not.

The utter distress Legia are enduring because of an administrative oversight will cause untold damage.  The club have to try everything possible, including an appeal which invokes Willie Maley and Jock Stein, but they must find a clear path through Uefa, which does not appear to exist.

What Celtic can do, is appeal to Uefa to have processes changed, just as we did in 1970 when we profited from the toss of a coin.  Instead of clubs having the responsibility of checking available players, they could be issued with the same list the Uefa observer had on Wednesday, making this mistake less likely.

Current processes allow a minor infraction to cause disproportionate harm to a football club, and the tournament itself. Celtic should not hesitate in saying so.

Registration partially tightens tonight on player eligibility for our Champions League play-off round against NK Maribor.  After today, clubs can only add one player to their squad for these games.

While it is important to get players in ahead of Maribor, I’m not convinced the arrivals will be able to have a transformational impact.  It will largely be those already at Lennoxtown who will exorcise the demons of Murrayfield.

For what it’s worth, Maribor think they are absolute certainties to progress.  Planning to analyse them in detail tomorrow; I’m not betting against them.

I was mystified as to how relegated Hearts managed to win away from home in their first game as a lower league club but now I’ve heard Ally McCoist blame the off-field input of Charles Green it all makes sense.  How could any footballer reasonably expect to put in a shift with a former director speaking to the media some time earlier?

Delighted to hear the Daily Record swooped in to asset this as the reason for Newco Rangers demise yesterday.  It’s the same deflection as went on during Murray/Whyte/Green years all over again.  Why do they do this to themselves?

Let’s hope Ally sticks to his guns are clings to that contract like a fudge doughnut.

It’s the official barclay’s EPL one, if that was the one the blog was doing before. I wasn’t aware there was one on the blog until Patrick27 informed me as I am relatively new, so it’s a new one of an old one if that makes sense.

    Correct

Ludogorets would have been seeded 5th in champions half of draw and Legia would have been unseeded.

Ludogorets would in that case have got a comparatively easier playoff opponent than Steaua Bucharest

They and St Patrick’s have bigger axes to grind than us.

I’m surprised you have not made mention of the three players expected to be paraded before close of play today. Not including Tonev.

  4. Not all “3-0” awarded scores have a happy ending.

Years ago my amateur team needed to win our last game of the season by four goals to win the League on goal difference.

We had played our opponents earlier at their place and beat them 6-0….so we were confident of the outcome.

Problem was…They never turned up…We were awarded the points and a 3-0

scoreline….but lost the League by a goal.

When we “protested” to the SAFA we were told …”It’s not the winning…it’s the taking part”…

And Legia think they were hard done by..!!…:0)

  8. Squire Danaher,

Again thanks for clarifying the actual situation, rather than my ill-informed examples. You are, of course, correct that Ludogorets have a bigger axe to grind (I’m not sure ST Pat’s so much – after all, LW probably didn’t use all 25 players in thier squad) than us – they have genuinely been robbed of a decent chance of qualifying for the group stages – Maribor would, one would imagine, be an “easier” draw than Steaua.

Recently I posted about going to see “Sunshine On Leith” here in Perth, Oz.

As we waited to go in, we started chatting with another couple from Scotland. Needless to say the question arose about which team we followed etc…

    Alas, he was a hun.

Despite this, and not without considerable tongue biting on my part, conversation continued in a reasonably civil manner.

However, the end point came when his wife described Sally McCoist as “such a lovely man”.

    That immediately terminated all conversation.

    There are limits after all….

Tonev looks like a long term scouted prospect and I don’t think he will make a difference against Maribor.

The kind of players who would make a difference are those that can pass the ball, have pace, are direct, can score, can defend.

We don’t have a goals scorer or the one we do have isn’t very good or very bright. We lost Samaras but may well get him back. We could lose VVD before the next game but I’d say we need him plus an other in centre of defence. We also need pace and power in the midfield.

I would bet on us going out to Maribor unless we perform summersaults in the transfer market.

So far it looks like 3 players in and 0 spend. If Samaras signs its 4 at 0 transfer fee and if the rumours are true an other Norwegian or Scandinavian from Cardiff on loan.

Don’t have a problem with this as long ad they turn out well. A striker though. Even Andy Payton and Tommy Coyne, Gerry Crainey were better than this lot.

  19. I admire the constant referral to any player we scouted or were linked with before being a board or John Park signing.

It’s a lot of garbage. A very limited number of players are keen to come to Celtic to play football because of our league and the same names will always be banded about year after year because they have shown an interest in the past. The pool we fish in for players is small. There may be the odd new name added but coming to Scotland for players is just not attractive as it once was. Nothing to do with the quality in our league it’s to do with what they receive in their pay packet. If it was all about quality players wouldn;t go to the US and Qatar for example as their leagues are dross. They go for the cash. Cash is king for 99% of footballers!

So we should just get together with Legia agree whats right and proper then let UEFA know what we’ve decided. Dream on, its their own stupid fault and no way UEFA would simply stand aside and let the clubs call the shots. Why would we need them if thats how things got played out. Our good fortune is Automatic Europa league qualification but no more than that imo.
