Celtic should to plan to score in Lisbon

878

Benfica enjoyed a 0-2 away win on Friday evening to remain joint-top of the Portuguese league with Porto.  They will have enjoyed a day off while Celtic played on Saturday and will two days training before tomorrow’s game.  By contrast, Celtic player will have rested yesterday and will get no more than a run out inside Estadio da Luz tonight.  With games coming thick and fast at the moment, hopefully rest is the most important requirement for the players.

Benfica shredded Spartak for most of the second half in Moscow but contrived to miss what chances they created, allowing the Russians their only win of the group so far.  The return game in Lisbon was a comfortable win for the home team.

Neil Lennon has some major tactical decisions to make.  He will surely acknowledge the danger Benfica pose but has to find a way of scoring an away goal or two.  Match day one between Celtic and Benfica brought a 0-0 draw, ostensibly a good result for the visitors, but the group has matured since then.  Both teams played that game as though it was an away game; Benfica were happy to defend and Celtic, in their first Champions League game since 2008, were keen to feel their way back into the tournament.

This time Benfica will attack with speed and hope that Celtic open up a little more than they did against Barcelona.  It’s important also to acknowledge that while Benfica are no Barcelona, they will also be less predictable than the Catalans, we will not have it all our own way in the air.

It’s going to be a game tiring 90 minutes where the use of fresh legs could be crucial but an early Celtic goal would allow Neil Lennon to set his stall out clearly.

Orders are now open for the very first CQN Annual, get it here!

  1. Minx, you probably already know this but I didn’t until quite recently….

The common practice of the parent insuring the car as the main driver but the child driving it as the real main driver is illegal.

Insuring the car with the child as main driver but putting a responsible adult as named driver fairly brings the premium down.

    And is legit too.

    Absolutely.

So what’s the current score of tragedies?

The idea of a boycott has been discussed on here over the years, the most recent being last season. What was discussed however, was Celtic supporters boycotting other clubs, not Celtic FC. Not our club. And yet now we have a situation where we have a sizeable section of our support on the verge of bhoycotting the Bhoys. Something wrong here. I have read the Green Brigade statement, and there certainly seems to be a prima facie case of harassment by either the club or the police, harassment that needs to be resisted. But if the situation is so serious why not boycott the Barcelona match, or even Spartak Moscow? Why coordinate the fantastic celebration following the 125th anniversary, when some, at least, in the Green Brigade believe that the actions of the Police are in line with the wishes of Celtic? This is not the first time you will see or hear the claim that Celtic are “complicit” with the Police actions. Which is it, police harassment or the targetting of members of the Green Brigade by Celtic Football Club? It needs to be resolved. My view is that boycotts, whether in Ireland, the USA, or in South Africa are actions to be taken when all else has failed. We surely cannot be at that point now.

  4. A very weak statement from Mr Lawwell. It does not clear matters up one little bit. From the AGM I know nothing approach to this deny and deflect statement.

If Mr Lawwell is instrumental In the criminalisation of the Celtic support he has to go.

He should come out and tell the truth….which I suspect he cannot….or he has to fall on his sword.

  6. “As with all football stadia, the Police have an important job to do and it is vital that the Club and supporters work with them in this regard. ” (Club statement)

How do they carry this out:

    a. Remove bottles of water from supporters as they are a ‘controlled container’.

    b. Continually video and search a group of supporters from the one section.

    c. Prevent acts of vandalism; arrest culprits for mobbing and rioting and sectarian singing.

    d. Stand about and do not very much at all.

I’ll go for a, b and d. Be careful if you question them about any of the above you’ll be threatened with arrest.

  7. What has impressed me about the team away in Europe is that finally we seem to have found a method of playing away from home with each player knowing and carrying out his role, pacy full backs who can recover and get goal side , interceptions at crucial times without desperate going to ground defending and a confidence that we can score goals.

Same again tomorrow and lets see where it gets us.

  14. Not been on all day as head not in it after last night. Just read the Celtic Statement, so the Govan Emerald and Green Brigade are liars and the polis are just doing their job.

  15. Canamalar. As someone who spends most of their life on here moaning about Celtic and its leadership you are clearly loving this opportunity to have right good whinge against authority again.

If you put 10 percent of your undoubted capability into positive energy to move the club forward constructively rather than seeing demons and agendas then god knows where we might be.

Somehow I think it unlikely you would do this.

I thought today was supposed to be FTT day.

    What happened there?

Is it still inaminute, inanimate, eh, I mean, planned?

For three weeks it’s being “redacted” (that is, changing SDM to xxx).

I get the impression that it’s being “rewritten” (that is, changing the whole report to give a totally different document, possibly one making a case for inclusion of the Gers, the Bears, the Raingers in next season’s top division, which could be called, eh, for example, Scottish Fitba Top Teams or FFT for short – there, sorted!).

  17. John O Neill, amazed at your post. Looked at News tonight on one side 5 or 6 Israelis looking at a few blocks missing from a garden wall and on the other side a family of 9 being buried after their home took a direct hit. The score around 5pm today was Israel 100 Palestine 3. However I feel sure Israel has gone further ahead at this stage and will definitely score heavily tonight.

  18. Can anyone confirm or deny whether Govan Emerald took this complaint to the club before airing publicly? I haven’t seen anything to suggest one way or the other.

I find it curious your stated opinion of ‘easy for folk with no accountability to cast stones’

The natural question to ask, is in your opinion how do you gain a voice and how do you gain accountability?

Are the only folk with accountability chief executives, policemen, solicitors – or does it extend further into other white collar workers?

  25. Has the club received an official complaint about the harassment? I’m sure they’re aware of the GB statement, but has a direct complaint to which they can respond been made?

  26. ” That statement does not even recognise there is any harassment”

    Nclhe,

And what a frenzy there would be if the club addressed harassment on the eve of our biggest game for a long while.

The club has stated it not complicit in harassment and imo is all it needed to say on the matter today.

    burnley..

I am positively campaigning for transparency and justice, while you are happy with your mushroom status, we cannot all be content with that life.

I find your unquestioning support for ever utterance from the boardroom an anathema, especially after what we have witnessed at ayebrokes.

I also note you never actually try a counter argument your first resort is always to have a go at the protagonist.

  28. I told you yesterday about my concerns regarding this boycott. I see how it goes at my Legia.

    Just read Celtic FC statement.

    This is what I predicted.

    What else ?

Tomorrow (maybe after tomorrow) you are going to read Green Brogade statement, kind of the answer on Celtic FC. GB statement will

gently suggest that the club is not without the sins. Dead end street.

  29. Really worried about the divisions we are seeing, woke up with a sick feeling in my gut this morning.

This could be the greatest season of our lives . Canny believe this has happened.

Pleased that the board have made a statement, but for me doesn’t say enough.

I think some token of appreciation for the Green brigade by the board would go a long way to healing this.

NFL could not have displayed his admiration more publicly.

We all need to be on the same page and pull together.

We are all bonded by a love of our club.

All parties I’m sure can work it out.

C’mon lads lets make some more history in Lisboa tomorrow!!!

First off, Let’s make sure we remain on the same side, even if we disagree.

If anyone has genuine information that the club is voluntarily providing information about the Green Brigade then let’s hear it. None* of us want that.

But we must be sure before we accuse. We have enough real enemies out there without creating our own.

The old saying used to be “when is the split” – lets not answer the question for them.
