Celtic to the core, Graves and your role

693

Several years ago, long before CQN, I was fortunate enough to be in the company of 10 of the 11 Lions who took the field in Lisbon.  It was a great to see them interact with each other.  A grinning Jinky walked in late, “Am I in trouble again?”, bringing a playful shout from all the others.

I’ve since met the rest of the squad who didn’t make the field, but Willie Wallace remained an unknown quantity, until this week.  I occasionally wondered what role Celtic played in the life of a man who left for Australia circa 40 years ago.

As anyone who read Willie on the blog this morning will realise, he was cut from the same wood as the rest of the team, with a deeply set Celtic grain.  When I met him on Saturday he had all the playfulness and spirit the other Lions had, but there was no hiding his sharp competitive edge when talk go around to matters on, and sometimes, off, the field.

Many thanks for chatting this morning, Willie.

If you can make it to Waterstones in Stirling tomorrow evening (late night shopping), I’ll be there with Willie, who will be signing copies of Heart of a Lion.  See you there.

I missed out on the preparations and commemorations yesterday by Celtic Graves and so many Celtic fans.  Caught up with it late in the day online.  Things about this club blow you away sometimes.  I know there is some traceable linage from Celtic Graves, though Jungle Bhoys and all the way back to Celts for Change.  With supporters like this, your club is in incredibly good hands.

At any other club these events would be remarkable.  At Celtic, they are just another chapter in a very special story.

Which takes me onto the next point………

All of these great things are underpinned by you, me and thousands of others buying season tickets each year, no matter who survives long enough to compete in the league, no matter how many times newspapers try to tell you Everton want (and will get) Neil Lennon, no matter if we win, lose or draw.

The Jungle Drums tell me sales are up on the equivalent period last year, which is great news, but it is absolutely necessary.  I want to see Celtic back in the Champions League next season, competing as effectively as they did last season.  I want to see us mature the development strategy which is already delivering such bounty.

This is your club, claim your seat and make it happen.

Stunning response to our ebay raffle and auction.  Sincere thanks to those who bought tickets and bid.  You have two days to buy a ticket for the framed Celtic top signed by the Seville squad, and a few days more for the signed and framed Messi top……..

Heart of a Lion available below, or see you at Waterstones, Stirling tomorrow evening (times will be confirmed tomorrow).

  1. Guys, there was no Swansea mention in the past. As I said, Bulgarian sport media, agents are well known for making the stories up.

    Nothing about Swansea here.

  2. Zbyszek. Anything about poznan signing of dundee United player. Barry Douglas

I agree. Fr. Conway was a lovely man. I’m glad he enjoyed life in Kirkie. RIP. I’m sure he would have been well respected.

If I hear anything new about Tonev deal I will post here.

On the player, his quality etc.

If he does not sign for Celtic I will make a post. If he signs for Celtic I won’t say anything until after his first game for Celtic, earliest. I will stick to my rules.

  5. Aiden disappoints again..

So frustrating watching him play when you know what he is capable off.

  6. Masty.

Yes waz interested to see if it rated a mention.

    Maclean on for mcgeady

I think Aiden’s problem is that his feet work faster than his brain. He skinned a couple of England players minutes ago only to be dispossessed by Rooney as he was making up his mind what to do next.

I truly thought aiden was going to be the next JJ, he was that good at around 11/12 he played for Glasgow schools 12s for 3 years in a row, totally unheard off

    Very interesting comments.

I was just thinking how we should be grateful to the SSM for getting £9m off Spartak Moscow.

At least Dick Turpin wore a mask.

It is all conjecture on speculation.

Twitter is like that. I usually just copy and rarely comment.

Would be a good move for the lad to have the support of his brother. Would be my only comment.

Aiden’s played against my Primary School team and scored 6 goals inside 20 minutes. Thank God he was subbed.

I do want to point out that I did not coach my PS team and if I had that would not have happened. I had an excellent record as a PS football coach. Ask Tom Boyd!

Hope you don’t mind a newbie/lurker interjecting! I knew Fr.Conway (known in our house as Fr.John) from his East End days. My Mum ran the choir, nae dogging Mass for me. Great man. His brother, Joe, passed away a couple of weeks ago. Lovely family.

Celtic v. Legia in 4th qualifying round.

My heart will be with Legia but head says that Celtic will win. Legia can make surprise. We knocked back Spartak Moscow two years back. Spartak were same quality at that time they were last year. Legia are stronger now in comparison to who were they were two years back.

Barry Douglas signed today for Lech. I hope he is big hole on the left side. He told our media that from what he learned in Poznan, Lech can be compared to Celtic. Lech to Celtic? He should say to Rangers.

  18. The Cup Final seems ages ago but this is my first chance to get on CQN since then.

It was a great day and met a couple of fellow CQNers for the first time – Tiny Tim and Timalloy. Enjoyed the pre-match beers & Celtic stories. Cheers Bhoys.

Also bumped into an old friend and infrequent CQN poster, Bobby Russell, which led to a lot more post-match beers.

Then I copied the BMCUW style of travel and missed the last train home, much to Mrs TT’s annoyance. I blame it on a 3pm kick off after all the 12:45’s – threw my body clock right out of sync!

    Can’t wait till next season.

No disrespect, I see from your comments you clearly have known the young man and bhoy.

However I have always struggled with the level at which most Celtic fans have consistently placed AMcG over the years.

I have probably watched over 90% of his games for both Ireland and Celtic. He is undoubtedly gifted with a high level of technical ability and has a vast array of “tricks”.

I don’t think he has a high level of footballing intelligence by which I mean making the right decision at the right time.

He is no longer a youngster (

I asked the OL of the Missions coach who the 6 shooter was and he told me that Aiden’s always got subbed to make it a fair match for both teams. I actually pleaded with him not to do it in case he became discouraged at not getting the regulation 60 minutes but he told me that he was playing for Celtic as well and getting his game time.

  21. Tonev to Swansea comes from eatsleepsport.com. It was translated and posted on Bulgarian websites. Eatsleepsport posted the news early morning today.

cannot disagree with any of that, it was his footballing ability only I base my disappointment.
