I am wanting my Celtic defenders to stand up to the likes of PSG and Barca and not ship multiple goals. Don’t trust JH to do that. Sorry.

  3. JH — give the boy a chance.

He is still learning the game and needs more experience.

Plays the game with a bit of a swagger — we need more of that attitude.

Hendry, and Ajer have not played against the likes of PSG and Barca. Jozo, Dedryck, Mikael, KT have and shipped embarrassing amounts of goals, do you want rid of them?

Anyway, opinions, time will tell is the likes of Hendry and Ajer will cut it at higher level. I suspect it’s more to do with how the team sets up rather than the individuals. We beat Barca with Efe Ambrose and Kelvin Wilson at center half ;-)

G67- thanks for reply, i only post on here, the comfortable passage achieved in R1, is excellent of course. The major problem is the middle of defence, which has not been addressed.Ajer and Hendry are very good prospects, Boyata seemed to become a far better player when WC was on, Simunovic i would have sold as soon as .His challenge and reaction to it got him sent off, he can’t play on plastic pitches, we cant keep changing our CBs every couple of weeks.Comperr is nowhere, we should have targeted a CB to be in by now.HH

  6. !!BADA BING!! on 19TH JULY 2018 12:24 AM

Ideally we would have signed an experienced center half, an upgrade on what we have, who could play alongside and help develop Ajer and Hendry. However until we ship one or two out it’s not going to happen. Boyata probably won’t sign a new contract and will be sold, Simunovic should be sold as his head is elsewhere. Once that’s happened, and when the English transfer window closes, we will hopefully get the new CH in that everyone is crying out for (and hopefully a RB as well). Even if we signed someone tomorrow it’s highly unlikely they’d be thrown straight in for Rosenburg tie. More likely Lustig will return as on right of three with Hendry and Ajer moving along one.

  7. !!Bada Bing!! on

G67- totally agree, i think Lustig will move to CB for next couple of years, we are too fragile at CB.HH

  8. Lustig has just went on holiday and is currently sunning himself somewhere. If Compper is fit he should slot into where Jozo played on the left of the back 3. Either that or switch to a 4 and play Gamboa or Ralston. If Moussa isn’t fit then it’s Eddy up top, Cal on the left and Tom Rogic back in.

    SETTING FREE THE BEARS 11:52

You have provided a pertinent analysis which gives some perspective. To answer your question, the least we should expect is a corner that is out of reach of the goalkeeper, lands between the near post and a short distance beyond the far post, and is delivered in a trajectory that enables an oncoming player to head it firmly with force, just like the three from which the Colombian center half scored in the World Cup.

Last season I watched Real Madrid play a team much further down the league, and defeat them 4-3. The defeated team (the name escapes me just now) scored 3 headed goals from superbly struck corners, like Lubo used to deliver. I sighed, remembering the dross we were served up by such as Armstrong, Sinclair, McGregor, Ntcham, Biton et al. Forrest doesn’t even try to take them.

As for free kicks, I think we should expect a minimum of one player who can consistently hit the target like Nakamura. Surely not too much to ask?

  12. Stairheedrammy on

It is really difficult to understand how negative some of us Tims are- an easy win last night when our players should still be on their holidays. early season play looking good and no goals conceded. One drawback being a possible injury to Moussa. Look at the slagging of the defence on here last night- a defence that conceded no goals over a 2 legged Euro tie this early in the season. Brighten up lads.

  13. Loads of positives to take from last night but like all of us the sight of Moussa holding the back of his leg (again) definitely took the shine off of it for me, hopefully just a twinge of sorts. Confident any combination of the current available defensive unit will be enough to see us past Rosenberg but we’ll definitely need some investment before the final rounds, otherwise they’ll be a lot of bhoys and ghirls watching from behind the sofa, myself included.

Couple of interesting quotes from Brendan among this article from the Scotsman this morning…

Brendan Rodgers may consider an early recall from holiday for Dedryck Boyata to plug the gap left in Celtic’s Champions League qualifying defence by Jozo Simunovic’s dismissal in last night’s 3-0 win over Alashkert. Croatian centre half Simunovic was sent off after just 11 minutes at Celtic Park for a high challenge on Alashkert forward Jefferson De Jesus. He is now automatically suspended for the first leg of Celtic’s second qualifying round tie against Rosenborg in Glasgow next Wednesday With German defender Marvin Compper sidelined again by fresh injury sustained in training, Celtic are short-handed at the back.

Boyata is not scheduled to return to the club for another 10 days as he has a break following his participation in Belgium’s World Cup campaign. “It gives us a problem but that’s always how it’s been for us at this stage,” said Rodgers. “Every pre-season there is always an issue with centre-halves. Marvin has a problem with his abductor, so we’ll see how that is, but it’s highly unlikely he’ll be available. “With Boyata, I don’t know – I’ll need to asses that over the next few days. Mikael Lustig is due back next week, so that’s a possibility but we have to respect he’s also been at the World Cup with Sweden and played a long season. When he comes back he won’t be fit and it’ll take a couple of weeks to get up to speed.”Rodgers had some sympathy with Simunovic but also suggested the player needs to be more cautious with his challenges in European ties.“In European football it’s always difficult when your foot is that high,” added Rodgers. “I thought the referee could have kept him on the pitch and given him a warning. Because I don’t think it was intentional.“The ball was popped back at Jozo quickly and he’s raised his boot which has caught their player. It was the same player who elbowed Kieran Tierney in the face. “He tried to cushion the header back to his team-mate and it’s come back to him quickly. It was just an impulsive thing really, he was going for the ball. But in European football, you normally get punished for that.”

Rodgers also has a slight concern over the fitness of Moussa Dembele. The French striker scored twice last night but limped off in the second half.“Moussa was tight at the back of his leg so we just have to assess that tomorrow and over the next couple of days,” he said.“He’s as fit as he has been at this stage of the season, so we are hoping it is just a tightness and that he’ll be okay.”

Celtic will face familiar foes in Rosenborg, having beaten them 1-0 on aggregate in the second qualifying round of the Champions League last year.Rosenborg squeezed through 3-2 on aggregate last night against Icelandic champions Valur Reykjavik after former Arsenal striker Nicklas Bendtner converted a 94th minute penalty.Bendtner had earlier opened the scoring from the spot before Rosenborg, trailing 1-0 from the first leg, went in front through Anders Trondsen.Valur appeared to have secured a dramatic victory on away goals when Kristinn Sigurdsson scored an 85th minute penalty but were left heart-broken in stoppage time.“It’s a tie we look forward to and we have respect for any opponent we face in these ties,” added Rodgers who was unwilling to add to speculation linking left-back Tierney with a £30 million move to Juventus. “I’ve nothing really to say on that,” said Rodgers. “He’s linked with everyone.”

  14. Anyone old enough will tell you big Billy struggled at right back at the beginning of his career. JH is still raw and inexperienced and also wouldn’t be starting these games if everyone was fit and available.

Tin hat on here but I think we would be more sympathetic to him if he was a youngster who had come through our ranks.

  15. Where were all the Blane Valley regulars yesterday? Was the only CQNer in there a few pink gins and a scoff then a pretty decent game, see you all next time. H H Hebcelt

  16. Don’t see a problem flying in Boyatta for the game. Will be fully fit, could play and then return to his break.Or is that too simple.Same with Lustig.

they are professional players, their club needs them.

“Tiger Woods has requested a plank of wood to go under his mattress to help with his dodgy back…”

Big Jozo should be sent to Carnoustie for the next few days following that stupid tackle last night… :-)

Joking aside, surprised (though maybe not) at the level of negativity after what was only our second competitive game last night…on way back home I heard Bonner describe some of our passing as sloppy…

I scratch my head at times…I know, I know, there are special shampoos for that…cheer up guys, we’re not huns…

  20. Amazed at the negative comments from last night .I only saw good things with how the team managed the game.

Seemed to be a very good attendance for a game we had already won in the first leg .

Sending off was harsh and the penalty soft but….. I thought every Celt played well (we were down to 10 for most of the game) and am baffled about different players being picked on.

To me we looked a very classy outfit last night.

Moose & Ed were awesome -Forrest lively- Broony ,like a fine wine improves with age -CM sharp as a tack -Nat showed many good things though not at his best- KT is KT- Hendry and Ajer looked good to me with cool passing and the occasional forward foray – CG made a couple of good saves.

Of course Rosenberg will much tougher opponents but we look to be ready for it.

  21. B67 @ 9.11

    That is the real issue.

We have not brought through any quality at CB in the last 10 years.

KA = Project brought in as a CM and converted to CB.

JH = Project brought in as a CB but has played on the right of a back 3 and a back 4.

Do we have anyone in the youths / reserve squad ready to step up?

We do not seem to have a properly functioning U20/21 youth set up.

Very hit and miss — we had a team 2 years ago that has not been allowed to play together.

Some games in the Kid On Cup — everybody welcome.

Then half were sent out on loan and now they are being released.

Seems to be a lack of focus in our current academy arrangements.

Our current CH crisis is but the latest instalment.

We seem to be in limbo between growing our own or buying it in at 20 or 22 for an average spend of £500K / £1mill per season. Cheaper than our current £2mill pa youth set up?

Imagine a footballer with the shot of Tommy Gemmel, the football brain of Dalglish, the dribbling ability of Jinky, the passing ability of Murdoch, the finishing of Larsson and the heart of Aitken…

… That would be the Celtic player of our dreams.

Now, imagine a footballer with the knees of Gillespie, the toe of Rieper, the hips of Boerigter, the shoulder of Melrose…

    … well, that’s Marvin Comperr

Rosenborg would bite your hand off for a 0-0 again next week. They’ve no chance of getting it.

They don’t score many goals, even domestically, and even given our defensive concerns they’ll get 1 at best and we will get 3 or 4.

    Probable scores, take your pick: 3-0, 3-1, 4-0, 4-1.

some of our problems lie solely at the decision making and implementation of said decision.

JH has done nothing to fill me with any confidence generally, though he looked more comfortable as the game wore on, his passes into danger werent crisp enough, this isnt uncommon in his play.

CG decision making is my biggest worry, no doubting his talent and application, but is dithering on the ball may come back to haunt us, as well as his mad dashes out of his box.

Unfortunately, these 2 examples are in the most precarious of areas and likely to cost us against better teams who like to press, and im not even talking about the PSG’s and Barcas of this world.

Other than that im a contented Bhoy, we didnt look like we had 10 men the whole night.

  27. Bb @ 10.06

We still looked like we are in pre season mode.

Very undercooked and just a bit lazy at times.

Then there is the bigger picture — BR3.0 but with all the usual early season issues.

No talent management in the RB / RWB area — ML is literally on his last legs.

And last years sacrificial offering is now not deemed to be good enough to get played against the stiffs.

No talent management in the CB area — we need to sort it spending big money if required.

Who could be this years VvD type buy — they are out there but you need to look.

The stable needs to be cleaned out — MC came in with high hopes but something has failed somewhere with that particular signing.

Early season strains and tears — starting to be a little bit repetitive with this?

Trying to hard at training — surely we can learn from our earlier mistakes.

At some point the issue is not with the players it is with the manager.

Needs to up his game fast.

Hunderbirds…I can’t pass judgement on Marvin Comperr…haven’t seen enough of him, but someone looked at him and saw a player good enough for Celtic. Brendan’s decision was to bring him in. It’s a strange one, we’ll see if he’s still here after this window has slammed shut (watch your fingers :-) )

    Level 5: The River Styx

Dante describes this level to be covered by a thick fog with a stinking swamp which is ankle deep. The wrathful and the gloomy and depressed souls reside in this level of hell. These souls are filled with anger and wrath due to which they constantly keep on attacking other souls and at times bite themselves too. Dante also saw some bubbles forming in the slime which are supposedly the souls of the sullen and gloomy who failed to accept the spiritual awakening when they were alive and chose to stay in the gloomy and depressing darkness. Therefore, as punishment, these souls are buried under the stinking water of river Styx.
