Tonight was the biggest test we will have as a team for weeks
Not a fan of criticism towards our own players, unless it’s constructive, but if Bernabei & Ralston are the answers…we’re asking the wrong questions (imo).
They were not alone in having an off night…yes, they did improve as the game wore on, but they could hardly get worse, could they? Calmac was off it as well. Poor passing too often from too many.
Full backs play an integral part in our game plan so changing both, and resting our most creative midfielder, was always a risky move. So it turned out, as we laboured tonight. The opposition outdone us 3-1 by HT with shots on target.
Their keeper was obviously not 100% after twice going down. Yet we ended the game with only 3 shots on target. There in lies our problem tonight. How many more goals would we have scored if only we’d more shots on target?
Too passive. Jota’s shot off the post was an early indicator that their keeper was struggling to cover his goal. Still, we never tested him enough.
3 for Jobo?
CCV was solid. Mooy hardly wasted a pass. Kyogo’s runs caused havoc – an assist for the 1st, and scored the 2nd (from another Mooy assist).
Those 3 get my vote tonight.
Hoping to see Johnston, Taylor and Hatate back in the starting XI on Saturday.

Both full backs were understandably rusty in the first half but grew into the game and had a fine second half . Would still have Johnston and Taylor as first picks though . Hearts , like most opponents , know they have to try to smother Mooy and Calmac but both take care of the ball so well , they can’t be nullified . Abada was a bit off it but Haksa’s brilliant goal will surely light the fuse on his Celtic career , delighted for the player and I’m sure we’ll see much more of him . Oh is kind of in the same place Haksa’s been in , only several months behind so let’s be patient .
When we signed Greg Taylor, his weakness was in passing and in the final 3rd, not defending. Haha snow improved in those areas.
Bernabei cannot tackle or defend .
He is a winger.

More from the BBC match report…
Maeda’s replacement, Jota, rattled a post with a bouncing effort from distance and Ralston sent an overhead kick too high, but Celtic were far from their fluent best until Hearts’ high-pressing exertions took a toll in the final half hour.
Not often I get to midweek games but well worth the effort and eventually a convincing win. Bit disjointed for the most part but three good goals at key points in the game. Tony R wee bit out of sorts in the first half, Bernebeu also, though he picked up when Reo and Haksa came on. Getting away after the game a scandalous example of poor road and traffic management as you will find. The London Road bike lanes the height of GCC stupidity. Next stop Tynecastle.

My friends in Celtic,
3 points, good win and the journey continues.
We had the choice of a few streams tonight. Some excellent quality.
My favourite was a girl streaming from the upper Jock Stein . Her patter was hilarious.
Like the LC final, that tonight was not near our recent best form.
We usually enforce our play on the opposition and force them to defend. It took around 70 minutes for the first signs of Hearts losing faith in their tactics. They pressed us on passing out from the back and we escaped the press less well and less often than they did.
Consequently, we made fewer chances than we normally do. Messing up our crossing also reduced our chance making.
And yet, the one thing that did not suffer was our work rate. Kyogo came back to help the defence out and make sure we kept on running and preventing the back 3 (Hart, CCV and Starfelt) were considering another round of passing at the back.
I never scapegoat players but Bernabei, himself, must think he is a winger. I watched him try to get involved in the defence of a Hearts corner, even to the point of telling others where to go, but just before the corner was taken, he ran out of the area hoping to get the ball sent to him to initiate a counter attack, without having taken part in the defence of the cross. Now, he did do some very good attacking in the 2nd half and he is brave enough in challenging/bumping players for the high ball. But, he needs to stop the crosses coming into our box, and he needs to preserve a defensive line set by our CBs, and he needs to improve his throw in which will, rightly in my opinion, get picked up as foul throws. I have no doubt the boy has talents but he needs to become better at defending.
For me, the best of the players tonight were Kyogo- for his constant running and showing for the ball, Jota- for application and classy skill when he came on, and Aaron Mooy- who stood up to the Hearts thugs and a lenient ref better than most. CCV is unlucky- he was imperious but he did too much needless ball re-circulation around the back tonight.
Delighted with the win but Hearts will have taken heart from how effective they were in disrupting our usual style
Now, I better get back to reading the Daily Record- find out what the latest top bants are in the Phone in Hotline
Really delighted with tonight’s result. Changes meant that we were not as smooth as usual. I love Tony Ralston. He was very rusty and had a very poor first half. He also looked a bit nervous to me. Bernabei defended erratically too during the first half but neither he nor Tony hid. They made their mistakes but improved as the game wore on. I enjoyed all the goals. I thought the Hearts goal was very good as were our own first two. Haksabanovic’s goal was a thing of beauty.
At this time of the season it’s a case of ticking off the games (anxiously) until we mathematically can’t be caught. We’re doing it with aplomb. It’s great being a Celtic supporter these days.
BTW- just did a quick check on Superbru and I see the weekly winning points total has been smashed by one of our near the bottom of the table performers. I will update formally sometime but it is the wife’s birthday and I may be going out for lunch.
