  1. While you guys have been going all Allepo, Ruskie, Hacky, Pravada, Propaganda and moaning about no moaning about how crap pensions were before it was your turn tae claim yours then moan about how bad it is for poor old you, I have been studying the SPFL table all night searching for ‘The Gap’.

As yet I am astounded of forehead as every team apart from one has 25 P. So please please please stop going on about this gap. There is no ‘The Gap’ or chasm. I’m away to confirm and try to understand what the Pts column is now.

Couple of nice post. Sounds like your dad was a fine Celtic man. I’ve heard a lot of nice words about Peter the bonus collector on an individual level over the years. And I concurr he has done many good thing both at a personal level for many fans and fiscally for the club. However, for me, that still does not cover the tracks for his failure/s in the corporate collusion of keeping the Blue Pound alive and downturn of our footballing greatness on field prior to BR’s arrival. I still believe for a CEO he has been in the job too long and the position needs fresh blood and new ideas.

Good on young KT for sticking up for himself. Sorry Brendan but the bobble of the ball did not create the assault on your young star. You should be manning up behind KT on this one rather than giving next weekends bombs are his excuse to half one of our players in two.

  4. Hi all, not posted for a while but looking for some help.

Following the death of my dad last year, an envelope full of old letters and photos has come into my possession.

Some of these are letters written by the Rev William Clyne (my dad’s grandad’s brother I think) who was studying at the Scottish Priest College (Collegio Sozzesse) in Rome in 1908. The letters are to his parents in Edinburgh and they are beautifully written and in one of them he is buzzing with the excitement of his recent ordination and his first Mass. Sadly, the young priest did from heart failure just one month after his ordination and we have a typed extract from “The Tablet” dated 9 January 1909 giving notice of his death.

There is also a white silk scarf on which he has written “a memento of my ordination to Mother, Nov 1, 1908”

The envelope also contains items relating to another priest called Very Rev, John Canon Geerty and I do not know who he is. There is a press cutting taken from the Daily Record which shows a photograph of a funeral procession with the headline “Over 20,000 pay last tributes at funeral of priest in Coatbridge” and underneath it says “remarkable scenes were witnessed in Coatbridge yesterday, over 20,000 persons lining the streets during the funeral procession of the Very Rev, John Canon Geerty. The cortege passed through the principal streets on the way to St Patrick’s cemetery, New Stevenston”.

There is also a large metal key which is “Key to the City of Buffalo” and we have no idea how this has come into my family’s possession or whether it is to do with Rev. Geerty.

Does anyone have any suggestions or local knowledge that would help us find out who Rev Geerty was and whether they key was to connected to him? If the key is connected to the Rev Geerty I would like to repatriate it to his family or church if possible.

Any help or ideas would be appreciated.

TD67 my initial thought was not to comment and perpetuate the debate from last night. However, after thinking about it some more, I will respond.

Firstly, there is a significant difference between immigrants and refugees but too often the terms are used incorrectly and confuse the issues. Immigrants tend to come to the UK for study (not subsidized by the taxpayer) or to work. When they arrive invariably they are not entitled to any state benefit; that’s a matter of fact, not speculation. Secondly, refugees who arrive in this country are not automatically entitled to any state aid; some get it and some don’t. The other remarkable thing is that many, many refugees (the majority I have encountered) would like to work but they are not allowed to.

My wife regularly deals with immigrants and refugees through her work; I also regularly deal with them through charitable work in my local Parish. I have yet to meet a single one who is here for a free ride. I have also worked alongside a good number of immigrants, none of whom I would class a s spongers or slackers.

You should also consider that (like a throwback to the 50’s and 60’s) that many of the menial jobs in the UK at this time are filled by immigrants: jobs are available but an unfortunately large proportion of UK unemployed won’t take this type of work and will stay on benefits. That’s not a criticism but an observation.

As for your “immigrant” status, you personally may not be one but by virtue of the fact that your surname is Donnelly there is something of the croppy boy and peat-bog in there. Unless one of your ancestors decided to adopt the name because they liked it.

Me? My stock is immigrant and I’m proud of that.

Finally, your main point is well mad: we should be doing more for our Pensioners! Me? I don’t have any problems with you spending your heating allowance doon the zoo! Your money, your choice.

I agree wholeheartedly with your post on immigrant workers. Part ( a significant part) of the reasons my own company has seen sustained growth, including several acquisitions, is down to the huge numbers of immigrants available for work.

Last year I needed 100 plus additional operators at relatively short notice and without the Polish workers available and willing to take up the jobs, I would’ve struggled to meet the schedules, in fact, I’d have regrettably needed to reject the contracts.

I dealt with 4 different agencies in an attempt to fill the vacancies quickly, but despite the salaries on offer being well above average for the area, the vg conditions, I simply couldn’t get any British workers. ( well I think I had 4).

I’ve no idea why this is, given there are quite a number of jobseekers in the area. I spoke with the job centres at the time, but anyone who arrived for interview, seemed disinterested, so I was forced to use agencies , which obviously costs me more when commissions are taken into account.

I can’t say if my experience is typical nationwide, but no doubt that in this region, the ‘immigrants ‘ will certainly be contributing more to the country than they are taking out.

Glasgow ghirl on 20th February 2017 9:11 am it basically means that John canon Geerty was a member of St Ignatius Parish and became a Priest. The local Parish Records may very well have details of his family, both past and present, so a call to the Parish Priest to make an appointment to see him may provide the info you need.

I don’t think it’s a localized issue; there seems to be many. many instances that reflect this.

Farmers leaders recently complained that they needed immigrant labour to mange their harvests etc.; I know people who employ labour in factories on minimum wage in a few areas in England and they have similar experiences to you.

I didn’t expect anything less from yourself and the politically correct mob in here, jumping on the heating allowance that I got and making out that it was all spent in the Zoo is actually juvenile that post I made about that was me being facetious but you’d need a sense of humour to get that, a thing that a Palestinian flag waver like your self wouldent get when you as usual put your spin on what you think was posted, I go to the Zoo a couple of times a week, regaurdless of whether I get heating allowance or not, and obviously your having a comment on things you don’t know about, actually you haven’t a clue if I’m being honest, I don’t get my hands on any money for my heating allowance it all goes into my heating bill bye weekly, so try and get your facts right.

And by the way lot of immigrants also get here applying under refugee status so that ones out the window too, and you and your wife I’m sure do a sterling job, but if by any chance you and your wife can come down from your crucifix for an hour or two, take a wee walk through Govanhill and have a look at the pillars of the community there, you used the term spongers, well that’s where you’ll find them, and tell the ordinary Joe Whois lived there for decades (and I know many) who can’t get two bob for a house they bought and paid for, wave your Palestinian flag in they’r faces and they’ll tell you where to stick it.

Having an opposite opinion from others doesent make you a bad person, we’ve got enough problems in this country, get our house in order first, and then sit at the table and put the helping hand out that’s my point, how’s about one of those oil rich Arab countries helping there neighbors out? To easy eh?

Assuming it looks like the real thing, rather than a tourist souvenir, you might want to contact their city council who presumably could provide a list of people to have received the honour. I see from the interweb that Gerry Adams was given one.

    http://www.city-buffalo.com/Mayor/Home/Leadership/PublicRelations/Archive_Press_Releases/2008Archives/March2008/MayorBrownPresentsKeyToCityOfBuffaloToGerryAdams

“Gerry Adams is a true Irish hero who has committed his life, often under very dangerous circumstances, to achieve peace and equality in Northern Ireland,” said Mayor Brown. “I am honored to present to him the Key to the City of Buffalo, which symbolizes our deep appreciation for his efforts to bring an end to violence and chart a path toward peace and stability in Northern Ireland. I was very pleased to join Congressman Brian Higgins, State Assemblyman Mark Schroeder and Erie County Legislator Tim Kennedy in welcoming Mr. Adams to Buffalo for this very important annual homage to our city’s and our nation’s Irish citizens.”

    1. Jack (Clint Hill) decided he’d rather have a nice cup of tea an get tore into the packet of Garibaldi’s his pal Victor (Kenny Miller) had brought for half time snacks.

    3. Lee Hodgson was the only Sevco player wearing a genuine Sevco top (no badge, no name). All the others were wearing tribute act tops to a now defunct outfit from 2012.
