  2. Jude..,

It’s on now by all accounts, I’ll be watching it tomorrow, it’s getting late here, no one tell me the score :)

  3. Food for thought. Ourselves and RB Salzburg are the only 2 home teams out of 15 CL games who won at home whilst not conceding.

Didn’t really go along with Paul’s earlier thoughts, but stats are stats and the shape of football in Europe is shifting. Minnows no longer exist.

Skippy/Packie commented on it late on. I posted just before – where is he? Needless to say – he then gets mentioned half-a-dozen times (when deployed deeper).

  7. Good result, decent performance. Will require maturity to go through.

Thought Brown and Bitton were our best. Boyatta, bar a few scary moments early on, showed why he will be star.

    Nadir will come good.

Nice night in Paradise, busy ole Gazebo turnout, always great to see some CQN legends.

Celtic against easily the best side we’ve played so far this season, the students of the game were quite correct, in referencing the Qarabag and Azebhajani c.hampions playing record to date.

They played very defensively Italian style in a no frills or stars 4 -1- 4- 1 system, but not a weak link in sight, and although RD was delighted with our 1-0 , it’ll take all our strengths, to get through to the play offs.

In the first half Celtic were very quickly subdued with nowhere for attackers to go wide, and the channels sealed up, the passes and groans from the crowd meant that Qarabag could play as a very solid defensive unit, and moved out with neat, attractive one touch passing.

All of this added up to making Celtic look off colour, and one or two heads went down, and even half chances were really quarter chances in the first half. With the Celtic support in great voice, it was time for changes and Ciftci should have broken his duck, but shot straight at the lively keeper , who would have liked to pose for TV, had there beeen any.

James Forrest was thrown on, but he couldn’t find his way through the double banking either, and it was left to Kris Commons dead ball, best cross of the night to find Boyata who banged it into the Celtic end, with one of only two on target headers of the night.

Official man of the match Nir Bitton took a knock and Johnasen dropped back to allow Griffiths up front, though he hardly got a touch. 1-0 would have taken all three points, unfortunately it’s only half time in Europe, but if Qarabag do have an achilles heel, it could be scoring against Celtic where we’ll pose more danger to them if we play the way we can, on the break.

  9. Ruggyman your Auldman got it right re Scotty, worst game I have seen him play, first half he passed on four occasions to invisible players, God only knows what he was trying to do.However I am over the moon with the victory and think we can get a result over there, btw Scotty was not alone performance wise, passing at times was poor, and giving the ball away cheaply, they are no mugs.

When izzy went down with cramp they had the chance to attack, both commentators said they were very surprised by the sportsmanship of the player for booting it out for a shy.

Swings and roundabouts mate, no everyone in their team tried to cheat and that’s good, no ?

Cheers, dunno tho. He was playing very again when he was hooked.

Perhaps my downer on Johansen colours my judgement, but it felt like an odd decision.

A run in the Champions League could make Bitton. Chap’s got talent and it’s starting to emerge.

Well done. Had a good day

Was beginning to think no one had backed them

Well done lads, WITS, I enjoy your knowledge of the nags and lucky for you & Precepta I wasn’t on, as for tonight I would have settled for 0-0, 1-0 is magic, big Boyata could be the man to follow “anytime” for the punters that like a punt, I am just delighted that if we notch one over there, they need 3, Ronny keep doing what you are doing

Yes good point and kudos to them for that -( it doesn’t help my argument tho’ :-)

Overall just felt they were at it too often when they have good quality players and it might come back and bite them- hopefully

How long is Leigh Griffiths going to put up with being our main goalscorer and being benched? Scott McDonald said tonight it would pee him off!

    Thanks for the updates.

I was on a dodgy phone connection in a dodgy pub in Norway.

I said anything-nil would do me. I had to explain to mystified Norwegians why I was jumping about their bar shouting ‘Yeeess! Boyaaataaaaa!’

I think a couple of them thought my wife had just given birth.

Very happy with the result. We will score over there, at least once.

  16. Saltires….,

From the audio our biggest problem tonight was the ref breaking up play and giving them every decision. It’s like he was trained at larges.

  17. …pfayr,

Unlikely, Celtic stopped the game being shown, which stopped their sport watching in Azerbaijan, so they are likely to reciprocate favour, just IMO.

  19. Euro footy has changed so much in the past few years, diddy teams are no longer diddy teams, it;s the old force who are the present day diddy’s, thankfully we have a coach who, imo will make us a non diddy team, no that we ever were a diddy team, but you know what I mean.

Delighted with the result, anything to nil is good these days, and we WILL score out there.

Thought the decision to remove bitton was crazy

  21. Oh and Saltires….,

Seems a few at the game who didn’t think we played that well forgot the ref had a big influence on the first half, hence we were none too good. It’s the wee things I remember :)

  23. Ekbhoy,

I only had audio on my premier CTV but noticed the ref getting boo’d on quite a few occasions in the first half for dodgy decisions, was the commentary team wrong for identifying the Booing was aimed at the ref ?

“Absolutely no offence but does it matter how others got on?”

It was an open CL draw. It wasn’t as if all the best teams were away from home first.

Therefore, it is further evidence of a couple of footballing trends:-

    1) All teams can keep the score down through fitness and organisation

    2) Most goals are scored on breakaways or when the opposition have committed too much too attack.

    3) Home teams, under pressure from fans, are usually the ones committed to attack.

    4) More teams are getting good results away from home, and most teams are scoring- only 4 out of 15 away teams failed to score- our opposition was one of those 4.

    5) Any home win to nil is a good result- only two teams, ourselves and Salzburg, achieved that.

    6) Our defence in Europe last year was a shambles- this time it is not.

Therefore, our result was a good one when you look at comparator teams trying to qualify.
