  1. Just read all the comments since getting home from the game. Love all the passion on here and find myself firstly agreeing with someone then agreeing with a counter argument. Not sure what that says about me!

My input would be this. We are relying too much on certain players. KT looks exhausted. Little wonder as he has no deputy and he’s playing for Scotland too! Ditto with Griff. These two are not going to get a break. Thank God SS and CM are being overlooked at least.

We definitely need to strengthen or this CL group could see us humbled.

Finally, as someone who is always one of the last to leave the stadium it is really annoying to see thousands stream out of a game like today with 10 minutes to go!

FFS! Just when the team need a wee boost to get them over the line they instead are left to witness thousands gathering round the exits like wildebeest at a watering hole. The amount of people left in the ground when the team applaud the fans is embarrassing. You are all happy to stay when we get the trophy in May.

Is it the fascination of seeing people trying to have an awesome firework display at 3pm on a sunny May afternoon that keeps you back then?

    Bloody pisses me off!

  2. Ajax Cape Town can confirm that Rivaldo Coetzee will return to the club from Johannesburg where the player was undergoing a medical examination ahead of a propsed transfer to Scottish Champions , Glasgow Celtic.

Following a routine medical examination carried out by the Celtic medical department they discovered an underlying problem with his right foot. The clubs were therefore unable to conclude the deal based on the medical information available. The player will return to Ajax Cape Town for further evaluation.

The injury has not hampered Coetzee to date having not missed out on any competitive action either for his club or the national team. Ajax Cape Town can confirm that they were not aware of any condition that would have potentially hampered a transfer to Celtic.

While disappointed that the deal could not be completed at this point the club are fully committed to giving the player the care and attention required in order to make a full recovery. Stuart Baxter, the Bafana Bafana head coach has been informed as Rivaldo had been called up for the upcoming matches against Cape Verde.

  3. So the fact that Brendan has publicy stated that he wanted players in so they could be bedded in for the CL, and the fact that he has stated he wants a CB in means feck all.

I would have thot if you say something publicly you really mean it, yet the board have not delivered, they have the means, I would wager that Brendan and his scouts have in fact identified who they want in, it’s Brendans reputation on the line.

We will see soon enough what is what, this board have a history of not backing their manager.

  4. On incoming players (or lack of them) Celtic say they tend to have 2 or 3 players on their recruitment list for each position, so now that the European qualification rounds are out of the way, players may now be available that weren’t previously. Perhaps their team didn’t qualify and are looking to offset lost revenue with a sale. Perhaps teams who qualified are looking to upgrade in certain positions?

I expect Moussa to be off next season, so why not splash some of that CL cash on a quality striker now and give him a season to bed in to the Celtic Way?

It’ll be an interesting few days at any rate.

I also have a sneaking suspicion the Paddy Roberts saga is dragging on because we are looking to getting him in on a permanent transfer. Buy back, sell on clause etc. might take time to negotiate. He’s a known quantity so here’s hoping.

  5. If Coetzee has failed his medical, then that’s life. His Club announcing the deal before the medical and what have you was very odd.

    Onto the next target then.

Mr Collum was RE teacher in St Ambrose around the early 2000’s by the way as a ML5 bhoy playing with the Bhoy’s guild heading over to the red ash park in Bellshill I always thought Cardinal Newman looked a magic school was even jealous of their flat red ash parks :-)

*My da took me to this game although we were 2-4 down to the holders of the trophy it was also our 1st home game in Europe. This was also not long after our amazing friendly against Real Madrid plus we had fared pretty well in the 1st leg having a good goal disallowed and 2 stone wall penalties claims denied. Bobby Carroll another unsung hero scored our 1st goal in Europe; he also scored the 2nd as well. This was also my first European game on the eve of my 15th birthday.

Although we tied 2-2 with them looking back it was a pretty good result as they would go on to retain the trophy beating Zagreb home and away in a 2 legged final, they also knocked out a Jock led Pars after a play off ironically in Lisbon, the 2nd leg of that game is the famed 6-2 Dunfermline victory. In the next round they humphed Hibs, that meant they met 3 Scottish teams enroute tae the semis where they gubbed Roma.

If I remember right Mr Bob Kelly signed Bobby Craig on the Tuesday and was straight into the team. Don’t think he lasted too long at Paradise. Craig that is not Kelly.

*Wee Bobby had been a very good player for the Hi Hi, Sheffield Wednesday and Blackburn Rovers who we signed him from so it seemed quite a coup for us, could this be the “ould heid” the Kelly Kids required.

He actually signed on the day of the game arriving at the Central Station at tea time that night and I recall the crowd murmuring when the team came out “who’s that” was the common remark. Those that remembered Bobby fae his Cathkin days were able tae fill in the blanks, of course I updated my da with my “jaymac now you know” memory, aye even back then.

He played well that night and 3 days later would bag a brace at Broomfield against his home town team, following up a week later helping us tae a 7-0 victory at Love Street, oh happy days, I think not, as in typical Celtic fashion of the time we hit a slump which culminated in him being in and out of the side until a 0-4 loss at hades where a wee high school lad watched from a frozen terracing and then suffered the flute playing hordes on the subway over tae Merkland Street, they were even celebrating the Sizzle beating they other Fenian bassas Clyde.

He was back in the side four days later in a Pat Crerand light Celtic team and scored a brace again; up at the Pen. By that time the snow had started tae fall and as the song said “In winter 1963, it felt like the world would freeze, with John F. Kennedy and the Beatles.” Aye we also lived in a northern town.

When the thaw came and the games resumed he retained his place and actually scored a hat trick at Palmerston, and then after a rough house 4-1 victory, in which he again scored, we lined up down at kilmasonic 4 days later in what was Jinky’s debut minus 6 players from the Saturday suffering a humiliating 0-6 defeat against a full strength templar side that were 2nd in the League at that time and would actually win it 2 years later.

Bobby seemed to flit in and out of the side after that but it seems that it was not his form that caused this but a bunion injury, which would also curtail a wee govan based wingers career which was just starting out about then, and when he was fit would continue to score goals, a brace again at Firhill this time as well as the same at Parkheid against his former employers.

Ironically, he was back in the side 2 days prior to that ill fated SC replay scoring in a 6-0 home win against the steelmen, Jinky being dropped after a 0-3 loss on the Saturday up at Tannadice.

A lot has been made about him replacing the wee mhan in the replay, but on reflection he was played out of position, he was an inside right FGS. In fact it wisnae Jinky’s position he took but Frank Brogan’s who had played there against Motherwell, there was nae chance of Frank playing due tae his hiding fae the deidco thug at right back in the final.

As it was, this was Bobby’s last game, 13 goals in 21 appearances, and he was gone that summer in a swap deal for Bobby Young, Ian’s brother, who never kicked a ball for the club and left for Tannadice on a free before Lent was over.

As for the much maligned Bobby Craig, after Perth he moved down to Oldham and then over tae Toronto City and Johannesburg before returning tae the Hi Hi where he played in their final game before doing a pre 1872.

He returned tae Toronto where he helped establish the Toronto Celtic Supporters Club a forerunner to the Bramalea, Downtown and Wexford Clubs. Some of the older Tims over here that knew him from his TCSC days thought highly of him including my own late brother who played for Toronto Celtic when Bobby coached them and widnae hear a bad word about him, said he was a genuine Celtic mhan.

Bobby is like a lot of fine players who were at Parkheid at the wrong time and subject tae Bob Kelly’s whims. Wee Ten Thirty, Jinky, the Buzz Bomb, big Billy and Bobby Murdoch might have went the same way if it hadn’t been for the Big Mhan, in fact Bertie had already been discarded and it was only at Jock’s insistence that he be brought back before he took over.

I often wonder how a former club captain and international and much coveted at one time by Matt Busby was allowed tae drift away tae Cathkin before departing for Oz would have fared playing for Jock as he was the club captain when he was signed fae Maryhill Harp and probably helped promote him tae the first team within 2 years while coaching the reserves.

  11. I thought William Collum had a great game today.

With his front two eyes he concluded no pens with authority and not once did he use his rear two eyes.

    Well played William.

As for Celtic. That appeared a very tired performance. With the midweek travel and time zone changes then its expected. Still we had enough to win but unfortunately gave away the daftest goal. Couple of cross bar shots which were unfortunate while most other shots were down keepers throat.

Onwards and upwards forwards and backwards.

I thought StJ played against our system well pushing high and forcing Gordon, Bitton and Lustig into a lot of fearful pressurised errors.

Today’s game was reminiscent of lots of games played following CL games. Some players seem to cope with all the pressures of high profile high demand miles of travel and some do not!

I thought right away that the opposition were all ‘giants’ and they would be physical for the off. We had more ‘off’ than ‘on’ players on the field and the physicality of the opposition made it more difficult to get into the groove

Nevertheless, Colum was the extra weight needed to prevent us gaining all 3 points. He is an embarrassment to refereeing!

Disappointed but not dismayed. STILL NOT LOST A GAME IN THE SPFL FOR YONKS!

BTW ended up in Turnstile bar pre game due to traffic conditions and my ears are still ringing with the Parkhead RFB belting out the ‘toons’!

Enjoyed it but me and plastic glasses is an oxymoron. Traffic or no traffic back to the Crown Creighton for me

    COYBIG!

  13. Sorry for both the young man & the Club that Coetzee failed the medical. It was a dream come true for him and he must be shattered.

AS far as Celtic are concerned the wheels must continue to turn. We definitely need an additional centre half, hopefully we have a back up on our radar.

This Champions League campaign will be about coming third & getting a run in the Europa, its a head to head with Anderlecht, if we win it then Happy Days, if we don’t we suck it up & enjoy our domestic dominance for another year.

If that’s not enough for some, I would ask how long have ye been following Celtic or have ye very short memories.

These are the very best of times and if ye can’t enjoy the now then ye have my sympathies.

  16. BR said in June, just after the Hayes signing, he wanted one more player in before the CL Qualifiers then another two later in the window once the EPL market ‘opened up’.

We signed Ntcham. We’ve got 5 days to see if he gets the other two he wants.

The only change since June is we have been very unlucky with injuries at centre half and striker. I’m sure that no one at the club foresaw all three recognised centre halfs to be out at the same time or both strikers out at the same time during qualifiers. Has that changed BR’s priorities or number of players he thinks he needs? We’ll find out by midnight on Thursday.

  17. why was our big centre back on the bench and not starting today, if needs must surely he starts, if we have to rely on ML to fill in heaven help us.

He said prior to the last window that he wanted players in so they could be bedded in for the qualifiers, the elusive CB didn’t happen, unlucky with Ebouie, obviously things changed for him in June.

The usual excuse the Jan window not the time blah, blah, after we got to the groups last season we should have planed for making the qualifiers this time as easy as we could, I don’t believe that has happened.
