Charlie Gallagher had a newsagents in Dumbarton when he retired and when a friend of mine was sent to buy a newspaper as a wee boy Charlie would always say to him ” You can keep the change” which the boy did – until his mother said to him one day “It’s Ma bloody change!” And skelped him round the ear adding “That Charlie Gallagher’s a clown!”

Eh — the account of St Aloysius by Big Jim McCabe wants to be taken with a pinch of salt as it will be heavily biased. He is Austin Lafferty’s faither in law and was a mad tim as well as being the long serving headmaster of St Als primary. He was the first person I ever knew to have a Ford Capri ……
By the way the aforementioned Grand Nephew of Margaret Skinnider was an OA who served in the war and his orders etc remain a secret to this day – not surprisingly he doesn’t talk about it much.
Horse racing is prob one of the bentest sports out there :-)

Having read the book,I was a bit disconcerted by the continuing references to himself.
However, the account of the turn of the century influence which St. Aloysius Coll. had on the educational status of Scottish Catholics relied heavily of factual school records and,I feel it reasonable to take those accounts as reliable.
I also rely on the reminiscences of my family, all of whose men attended the school….some around that time.
What bothered me was the reference to the school`s “products” rather than the school itself.

You honestly think that Griffiths is better than Larsson?
At this time LG is absolutely fantastic for us.
It’s just my opinion but Henrick played against much better opposition both domestically and in Europe.
“A phrase which should mean something but rarely does when it’s used by sports players – especially British soccer players – and radio/TV commentators. You think the speaker is about to offer a balanced point of view – e.g. “I know I’m critical of X, but, to be fair, he is recovering from a bad injury”, but most times, they’re just trotting out the same dumb platitudes to fill airtime. Interchangeable with “at the end of the day” and “as I say”.
