Celtic’s headwinds

Let’s be honest, you and I were never completely comfortable facing Newco, or even old Rangers, with the wind at our backs and all indicators pointing green.  Celtic are at their best when they have the odds to fight against.  It has always been the case: Inter, not so much Feyenoord, Barca but not Molde.

When Neil Lennon eventually addresses his depleted squad after the Covid diagnoses of Odsonne Edouard, Nir Bitton and Hatem Elhamed, the enforced absence of Ryan Christie, the injury to James Forrest and who knows what after the remaining international fixtures and travel, he will not have a moment’s doubt.

Celtic are the champions because they flourish in headwinds.  Neil Lennon has now run out of fingers to count his league title wins, whereas others have no idea what it is like to win a league.  Despite being affected by Covid like no other club, there will not be a moment’ self-pity as the players prepare for Saturday.

There is frustration at the club that their safety protocols have not been matched by travel arrangements of various international teams, but that is a matter for official channels.  This is a confident squad of players who have what it takes to build league-winning campaigns.  I’m feeling OK about Saturday.

    Forgot about Soro also for the bench if someone else falls out due to injury or Covid…just realised I forgot to add Moi to the bench…as I said not too shabby at all.

    I think the best footballers of 50’s early 60’s were relatively well paid and moved from club to club for the money on offer.

    you do realise the players in the forties and fifties used to travel on the trams and the trolleybuses with the fans on the way to parkhead, no bigtime charlies then, they new where their bread was buttered and behaved accordingly, good god almighty what would they think of the present celtic players with their flashy cars and 20 grand a week ,you tell me. a club that was formed to feed the hungry in glasgows deprived areas irrespectful of their politics or religion, changed days indeed.

    That is an amazing story – one I’d never heard before.

    Eddie tested positive last Monday meaning his isolation ended today in France.

     

     

    If Eddie has remained symptom free throughout then I’d expect a club like ours to have had a personal trainer enroute to Paris yesterday. Eddie will be training this week and an assessment passed back to Lenny.

     

     

    If he was poorly then he’ll likely be out for weeks. We’ll know on Saturday at 11;15 am.

    So today, in the wide and varied world of sports we have Ronaldo testing positive as well as world number one golfer Dustin Johnson and two pro cycling teams pulling out of the Giro D’Italia.

     

    It’s only going to get worse re positive tests. Nervous times for all sporting organizations.

    My Dad, was a Tram Driver and one day stopped his tram in Haggs Road, to pick up Bobby Collins who was walking back from Ibrox with his boots under his arm and dropped him at Pollokshaws. Changed days indeed.

     

     

    Today I read a story of a Celtic player called McMaster who walked to Celtic Park from Edinburgh to play against Rangers

    A sad state of affairs that we should put ourselves in a position of worrying about beating the new huns. Oh how our standards have regressed. How did we manage to get from being the gravedigger to handing them our shovels? Dearie me 😔
