Century of Vanity hid truth

1937

It’s not like we didn’t warn them.  Charles Green, with his ‘blame it on bigotry’ and ‘Rangersitis’ nonsense was an even more transparent charlatan than wee Craig Whyte.  Green moved in, fed them the nonsense they were oh so willing to swallow, and made off with their millions.  All carried out in broad daylight.

The financial realities were self-evident from day one of Newco’s existence.  For a while you had to wonder if any of vast number of fans, journalists and fan-journalists with computers had a spreadsheet between them.  But, a more powerful force than Rangersitis had taken hold – vanity.  The kind of vanity only those afflicted by a notion of supremacy are susceptible to.

Their club was liquidated, a newco was formed.  It adopted Rangers’ name while the original club was still an SFA member (and granting permission for their players to turn out for was for the time known as ‘Sevco Scotland’.

Put yourself in their shoes for a moment.  This isn’t an easy pill to swallow.  Around these parts people invest the kind of sentiment in their football team which goes into nationalism elsewhere, occasionally causing wars.  It’s a primitive but natural part of all of us, so perhaps we should have been more respectful of the feelings of others at the time.  Cough.

If someone was able to chart the world’s Cognitive Dissonance harvest it would have been off the chart for the last two years, brought about when a degrading reality met a supremacists vanity.  The subsequent scarcity of Armageddon (biff), Celtic’s flourishing Champions League action (bang), the new New Firm (whallop) were all late blows which none of the Jokers at Ibrox anticipated.  Even Kilmarnock managed to sort themselves out without collapsing into administration.

Without the ability to accept credit or debit cards, or with the bank’s authority to allow fans to automatically renew season tickets, the signs are written as tall as Ibrox’ Club Deck.  I can’t see more than a few thousand being prepared to throw their money into a landfill site.

Season ticket renewal deadline has been moved to a week before when next month’s wages are due.  Right now the directors have a reasonable aspiration that tens of thousands of fans will renew but on 17 May, the day after the deadline, reality should crystallise.  If there was a spread bet available, I’d put my money on administration in the days to follow.

Money talks, it don’t sing and dance and it don’t do walking away….

Ta for your comment but I am sick of the like of Neganon continually slagging me. There is not one thing I said which is untrue.

Neganon stands on the same side of the Loyal Orange Order. He stands on the same side as the Unionist Tories, Lib Dem and the oldco/newco

Labour. And by extension he supports the retention of Trident.

You can put it in some different and maybe less nasty ways but the above mentioned points will remain. Off out for a couple of hours of good Tim company.

God it’s tedious scrolling past so much pish about the referendum. If there was some debate about real issues it might be worth while but the am votin y or n constant ad naseum and there are too many proddies in the snp debate is getting tiresome. Can you take it up a notch to budgets, shared services, the role of cosla, the education curriculum, currency, interest rates, inflation, the economics of what might actually happen. FFs it’s boring and there are too many to scroll on by.

Ok cat among pigeons. The tabloids are about to go tonto on Neil Lennons unhappiness at the boards treatment of Dolph. Pay rise wasn’t well received. Neil’s perception is that he was due it. Neil might be next to be offered reduced pay as it doesn’t appear we will have any competition any time soon.

I’ve always been a bit scepticle about admin for newco but after reading yesterday’s review I just can’t see where they go from here. Even sale and leaseback doesn’t appear to be a viable proposition now as it would take over 10 years for the spivs to get a return on there investment.

Whatever does happen it will have repercussions for our club whether that be in reduced revenue from lower attendances or from commercial partners, it will affect us financially and that is what will be a concern to the board.

I honestly used to hate the games against the team from govan, I’ve posted previously about my feelings on us playing them. From a selfish and totally personal point of view I would gladly never see us playing any team from govan ever again.

Would my interest in Celtic continue without these games, for me yes though I wonder how my grandson Jayden will see it if Celtic go on and continually win the league year in year out for the foreseeable future. Will he be as eager to go every game as every game will no longer matter in the deciding where the league title ends up.

I’m going to put my tin hat on here and say for the good of Celtic I think we need a rival.

Scottish football may not need a strong team playing out of govan but it does need some team playing there and I think most of us if we are honest realise that.

  15. So talk of 20 redundancies at ibrokes.Normal working class people who regardless of their affinity are probably in the main getting close to in a year to what McCulloch gets in a week.I have no doubt that a 10% wage cut across the board could have kept the majority in a job.Cast your minds back to the WE ARE ALL IN THIS TOGETHER days at the inception of them.Just the thoughts of an occasional poster.

  18. eddieinkirkmichael

Totally agree you just need to look at the attendances the past 2 seasons. In my opinion season ticket holders are picking and choosing games because it doesn’t matter if we win or lose we’re still going to win the league. There are usually 5 of us go to the games a couple are talking about not going tomorrow to watch the Liverpool v Chelsea instead.

  19. Eddie, we do need rivals, we have them, they play in the Champions League every year, we need to get competing with them.

Aberdeen, Dundee Utd et al will challenge in time domestically, because we won’t financially dope the game. The game will level out, every other club has seen an increase in gate because they are becoming more competitive.

  20. Is there any finer feeling than the anticipation of a match at Paradise , day off booked for Monday and a gid Swally in prospect?

After 35 years of attending Celtic Park my heart still fills with pride when I see those hooped jerseys emerge from the tunnel into the light.

It is high time that somebody asked the question why the domestic football authorities where Celtic are well represented are advocating and encouraging this overt criminal fraud. That their is nobody within Scottish football hounorable to do that is not a surprise. That no ambitious politician wants too surprising. That no legal body or independent watchdog is interested is scandalous. The judiciary expected. The media also. Both governments. UEFA, The ECA. All of them in the implicit belief they are doing the right thing. Not for huns but for each other. Huns still to daft and bitter to see through it, which won’t happen as I hope they do. THATS THE ONLY THING THAT WOULD BRING THIS SHAM DOWN. A sickly medieval peasant would not accept such a state of affairs.

Marspapa, If Neil was to leave I think the club would look to replace him with Stevie Frail or John Kennedy if he was ready. Always liked Stevie Clarke myself but Stevie is prob in a wedge more than Neil at the moment. We would prob get linked with Owen Coyle again ..zzz.

I’d go back for Gordon Strachan or take a flyer in John Collins.

  28. Doc,

I agree with you it would be great if the Sheepies and Arabs gave us a challenge on a level playing field without the stench of Sevco and their financial doping which has finally run dry.

However, our problem if this happens is that Celtic will be so far off the pace in CL that scores like Barca this year will become more frequent.

It becomes a race to the bottom for Celtic rather than teams raising the bar to compete in Scotland.

Domestic competition will only happen South of M74.

  29. Eddieinkirkmichael

We do have rival(s) we only won the league, I’m not diminishing that achievement

But if we won treble after treble it might become boring , rangers will be in the top

League before we know it along with cup games against them , also hopefully CL

Games there is much to look forward to (rangers not being one of them ) change of managers , players , young talent coming through , sadly I agree fans will pick and

Choose , this my friend is where the Board must reinvigorate the support , a video was put up earlier and what a great tribute to Celtic it’s fans and it’s players , people say it’s great to be a Tim right now , it’s always been great to be a Tim in my eyes anyhoo tin hat or not hope your grandson like my grandsons get Celtic the way you and I and thousands upon thousands get

    Celtic ;)) g/nite all

  30. couple of things celtic can and must push to help clean up Scottish football and make it more competitive;

change financial distribution (domestic and C/L as well as E/L) that incentivise winning, but not gambling (commencing in 2017-18, all teams that enter C/L and E/L put 50% of commercial profit generated split with Scotland’s European representatives for the following season)

ensure all clubs operate a 60% players to wage ratio to prevent financial mismanagement (cheating)

introduce a Scottish Premiership of 16 teams

increased relegation spots and relegation play-offs

    introduce European play-off spots

introduce 2 points for score draw

Aberdeen, Dundee united, hibs and hearts are very much disadvantage (in a sporting context) from having to play celtic and in a previous life time rangers 4 times per season during the league campaign.

introduce two leg league cup competition to add games (regional if needs must)

good for well run clubs like celtic, hibs, Aberdeen and Dundee united, bad for less well run team like hearts and sevco that would forced to live within their means

    1st place – champions

    2nd place – European place C/L or E/L

    ……………………………………………………..

    3rd

    4th 2 leg european play-offs –

    5th3rd vs. 6th + 4th vs.6th final

    6th

    …………………………………………………….

  31. Eddie, Rye, I am simply an optimist.

The biggest budget doesn’t equal winning, not always.

We have always had bigger crowds, therefore a bigger budget, we don’t always win.

We will win the league for a number of years, we may do ten, but it won’t all be easy.

I do favour a different league, Atlantic type would be great, but anywhere but here would do nicely.

  32. Craigellachie10 on

Can anyone enlighten me on Celtic Nation fc. I was in Abington services this evening when a fair sized group of guys in hoops came in, obviously on their way home from a match. I was puzzled as we weren’t playing until I saw that they weren’t our strips. Since discovered they were Celtic Nation fans.

Is there any official link with us?

  33. I think the best analogy for Sevco in footballing terms is Portsmouth……both sets of fans are equally as horrible and both teams will NEVER recover from going into administration.

Forget Rangers in all of this……they died…….Simples!!
