Century of Vanity hid truth

1937

It’s not like we didn’t warn them.  Charles Green, with his ‘blame it on bigotry’ and ‘Rangersitis’ nonsense was an even more transparent charlatan than wee Craig Whyte.  Green moved in, fed them the nonsense they were oh so willing to swallow, and made off with their millions.  All carried out in broad daylight.

The financial realities were self-evident from day one of Newco’s existence.  For a while you had to wonder if any of vast number of fans, journalists and fan-journalists with computers had a spreadsheet between them.  But, a more powerful force than Rangersitis had taken hold – vanity.  The kind of vanity only those afflicted by a notion of supremacy are susceptible to.

Their club was liquidated, a newco was formed.  It adopted Rangers’ name while the original club was still an SFA member (and granting permission for their players to turn out for was for the time known as ‘Sevco Scotland’.

Put yourself in their shoes for a moment.  This isn’t an easy pill to swallow.  Around these parts people invest the kind of sentiment in their football team which goes into nationalism elsewhere, occasionally causing wars.  It’s a primitive but natural part of all of us, so perhaps we should have been more respectful of the feelings of others at the time.  Cough.

If someone was able to chart the world’s Cognitive Dissonance harvest it would have been off the chart for the last two years, brought about when a degrading reality met a supremacists vanity.  The subsequent scarcity of Armageddon (biff), Celtic’s flourishing Champions League action (bang), the new New Firm (whallop) were all late blows which none of the Jokers at Ibrox anticipated.  Even Kilmarnock managed to sort themselves out without collapsing into administration.

Without the ability to accept credit or debit cards, or with the bank’s authority to allow fans to automatically renew season tickets, the signs are written as tall as Ibrox’ Club Deck.  I can’t see more than a few thousand being prepared to throw their money into a landfill site.

Season ticket renewal deadline has been moved to a week before when next month’s wages are due.  Right now the directors have a reasonable aspiration that tens of thousands of fans will renew but on 17 May, the day after the deadline, reality should crystallise.  If there was a spread bet available, I’d put my money on administration in the days to follow.

Money talks, it don’t sing and dance and it don’t do walking away….

  1. Scottish football is on the brink of returning to the 1980 s glories.

    Totally convinced of that.

No huns means clubs can compete for trophies , and winning a trophy breeds confidence and ambition.

Watch the rise of Aberdeen and united next year. Live within a proper business structure , promote the youth and see what happens.

These clubs will get close to Celtic, leagues balance out over time. Look at atletico Madrid, Liverpool.,

    Its statistics.

  2. Right guys, maternity patrol. These 2 ewes are having us on I think. Back shortly. :-)))

Well done, Paul , for a wonderful psycho-analysis of ‘the queer folk’across the water. They have been ably assisted in this delusion by the biassed Scottish media and the incompetennt S.F.A. Long may it continue!

Have nothing against Liverpool but equally have no particular affection for them or any English team. I look out for those teams friends support but that is based purely on friendship.

Should Liverpool , Chelsea or Manchester City be champions I will be neither up nor down about it.

It annoys me intensely to see more and more coverage of the English league in our newspapers.

There can’t be any other significant football nation in Europe where the football of another nation is more prominent than the domestic version. Do the Dutch show more German football than Dutch; the Belgians show more Dutch than Belgian; the Portuguese more Spanish than Portuguese; the Danes more Swedish than Danish?

Do their cereal packets advertise offers of collecting tokens to acquire images from a foreign league? Do their national TV stations ensure their domestic product is but a fraction of the coverage from elsewhere?

    It is cruelly invidious.

I have no problem with your love of Liverpool (and their fans) but as a Celtic supporter they matter not a jot to me. Our game is in a perilous state and it won’t be too long, if we don’t protect our own interests, before we, like Ireland and Wales, end up being nothing more than surrogate supporters of the English game despite England not caring either way. So you can post as you like though its repetition annoys me quite a bit. That is my problem not yours!

Without Celtic succeeding in a European context our club will be seriously diminished and may become a shadow not only of our greatest teams but even of the standard we have now.

As I said this is not a post against you but merely your comments triggered a deep seated fear and dissatisfaction I have for the game in general.

But hey ho, nobody seems to care too much. To paraphrase a popular maxim on this site … “your grandchildren will support Chelsea/

    Arsenal/ Manchester City/ Tottenham…”

  7. St Stivs, I agree, in a couple of years, Aberdeen and Dundee Utd will be very close to us in the league. I hope it is because their quality is increasing.

Hopefully Lennon is our manager for the next 10 years. All managers make mistake (He is no different) but overall he is improving and still developing his management skills.

  10. Doc/CRC

back home and thanks for a great night oot last night.

Doc- we spoke about Celtic Nation and its only one team from their league- Spennymoor, who will be promoted unless another team higher up drops out of the league.

I want any team with Celtic in its name to do well. These guys are at step 4 in the English football pyramid system- not a great level of football, Ive played at that level and as CRC will tell you I am one of the guys who struggles at CQN fives !! so I really do not understand why anyone from Glasgow/Scotland would have the desire to travel to England and follow them. Appreciate looking for their result as I do, but to physically follow them- I must be missing something.

    Missed the intro………

Just thought you might enjoy seeing this humongous A380 as it makes its first landing at San Francisco airport.

In case you’ve ever wondered what it would be like to land a “flying city”, here’s a look at it! What a beast………… Can’t imagine 800 folks on the same airplane!

This is an incredible video of a German Airbus landing at SFO. The approach shows wonderful and memorable views of the GG Bridge, the Presidio, the Bay Bridge , and the approach to SFO. You will enjoy this aviation video.

Big, Big Airplane ~ 800 PLUS PASSENGERS

Airbus A-380 First Landing at SFO…..NOW THIS IS REALLY WORTH WATCHING.

    Use full screen!

The pilots sit away from everything, no yoke, etc. Captain pulls up a keyboard once in a while to enter info but the plane does most of the work…..

It seems extensively automated. The air traffic controller gives them heading, altitude and speed, and they dial it in. Pretty interesting.

For best results go “full screen” on your monitor . It will seem like you are in the cockpit.

Thanks for this video clip, I really enjoyed it and it is definitely much better in Full Screen.

Seriously…..used to love coming up to take him to see his Bhoys and watch the big joyful smile on his face as the Hoops ran out the tunnel…..then on to Harry Ramsdens( a posh restaurant for him……when he grew up in the 30s,a knife and fork was posh!! ).He has some wonderful and sad stories about following his team through thick and thin.

Would love to bring him up the farm for some eggs mate.

Aberdeen are nearly £10m in debt.

Dundee Utd are nearly £5m in debt.

While I’d love to be proved wrong I don’t see any genuine league competition coming from that direction nor any European adventures either!

  15. CeltFish, I think the point is, if they continue to climb the leagues the can drop the Nation, and move to Glasgow. A route into English football for Celtic, purely speculation.

To physically follow them, no, not for me either. They may miss out this year going by the league now.

    Great fun last night.

  16. How to make a 16 team league work.

Home and away – 32 games.

Then 4 x 4 mini leagues, retaining points , home and away. = 38 games total.

Top 4; first three get euro places., 4th plays 5th , one play off for last euro place.

Second 4, all playing for that 5th spot.

Third 4, 12th spot play off with 13, winners bonus payment.

Last 4. 16th relegated. 15th one off play off with second in lower league.

Be creative. Everything to play for, spread the risk spread the reward.

  17. Tricoloured Ribbon on

    doc@ 23:13,

I can’t see any team getting close to Celtic in the coming years.

They may be able to close the gap slightly, but the financial gap we have over them will have us winning the League easily in the foreseeable future.

  18. My friends in Celtic,

With reference to the on-going dialogue regarding Ryan Giggs.

Can’t believe what I have just seen. Banners “In Giggsy we trust.”

Imogen that. His family certainly won’t.

He has crossed a line and his use of injunctions was deplorable and inappropriate.

He was unarguably a great player.

As a man he is despicable.

Expectations of human behaviour in a player is one thing but in a manager it is another.

    ,

To manage you have to command respect, you do not necessary have to be liked. IMO, how can any player or respectable spectator respect Giggs ?

Sad pathetic excuse for a human.

Great player or not I would never, never except that at our club.

    HH, always in Celtic.

    WOW ….thank you…!!!!

  20. The rise of a challenger is based simply on probability and statistics.

Could Aberdeen as an example put together a winning run against everyone and Celtic, well aye.

It can happen, they only need to be marginally better than the rest.

We can score more, lose less goals, but lose a couple of gamed and the league will be closer.

    Convinced of this.

  21. Justafan,

I respect your opinion and know exactly where you’re coming from.

I’ve got lazy about Celtic and geography/work commitments have made it far easier for me to travel to Anfield or play golf at the weekend.

I went everywhere, home and away, following Celtic when I lived in Glasgow……Being a Junglebhoy in late 70s to early 90s are my favourite footballing times ever.

I know I need to make a bigger effort next season.

I love Celtic FC and our fans mate……Always will!!

  22. Tricoloured Ribbon, that is to assume all things stay the same.

Speculate, we are doing well in the Groups in CL, distracted from league football, we have a lead but not so large, 6 points. We qualify for last 16, win, get to last eight.

Aberdeen are on a run, we are still distracted.

Over a season we have a budget that should mean we will win the league for a long period.

We have to think of ways, either out and into a stronger league, which we have to accept we won’t win every other year, or make our own better.

I think, short term, we have to try to do both.

We are where we are, make it better, but always work towards changing our environment.
