Century of Vanity hid truth

1937

It’s not like we didn’t warn them.  Charles Green, with his ‘blame it on bigotry’ and ‘Rangersitis’ nonsense was an even more transparent charlatan than wee Craig Whyte.  Green moved in, fed them the nonsense they were oh so willing to swallow, and made off with their millions.  All carried out in broad daylight.

The financial realities were self-evident from day one of Newco’s existence.  For a while you had to wonder if any of vast number of fans, journalists and fan-journalists with computers had a spreadsheet between them.  But, a more powerful force than Rangersitis had taken hold – vanity.  The kind of vanity only those afflicted by a notion of supremacy are susceptible to.

Their club was liquidated, a newco was formed.  It adopted Rangers’ name while the original club was still an SFA member (and granting permission for their players to turn out for was for the time known as ‘Sevco Scotland’.

Put yourself in their shoes for a moment.  This isn’t an easy pill to swallow.  Around these parts people invest the kind of sentiment in their football team which goes into nationalism elsewhere, occasionally causing wars.  It’s a primitive but natural part of all of us, so perhaps we should have been more respectful of the feelings of others at the time.  Cough.

If someone was able to chart the world’s Cognitive Dissonance harvest it would have been off the chart for the last two years, brought about when a degrading reality met a supremacists vanity.  The subsequent scarcity of Armageddon (biff), Celtic’s flourishing Champions League action (bang), the new New Firm (whallop) were all late blows which none of the Jokers at Ibrox anticipated.  Even Kilmarnock managed to sort themselves out without collapsing into administration.

Without the ability to accept credit or debit cards, or with the bank’s authority to allow fans to automatically renew season tickets, the signs are written as tall as Ibrox’ Club Deck.  I can’t see more than a few thousand being prepared to throw their money into a landfill site.

Season ticket renewal deadline has been moved to a week before when next month’s wages are due.  Right now the directors have a reasonable aspiration that tens of thousands of fans will renew but on 17 May, the day after the deadline, reality should crystallise.  If there was a spread bet available, I’d put my money on administration in the days to follow.

Money talks, it don’t sing and dance and it don’t do walking away….

    doc,

We have exhausted every avenue, year after year to get into England.

    Been hearing it for decades.

Can’t see anything happening unless maybe this Atlantic League materialises.

In the meantime,it’s full steam ahead for 10 in a row buddy!

I think these ewes are having a laff at us. Just released the newest lambs(born last wednesday) and their mum into the main herd. Trust me, there is nothing in this world sounds like the new lambs baying for their mum, and her response. Spring is defo the bestest time of the year.

Anyhoos, shame you won’t manage up for the remainder of this season, but, as I have renewed for next season, you and yer da are very welcome to visit us and get REAL farm fresh eggs. Looking forward to it. :-)))

I can understand some people thinking it might be a Triojan Horse to the English leagues. At least for a couple if seconds. The mechanics of obtaining a licence and the criteria required will prevent such a switch-a–roonie from ever happening. We are dealing with the English FA here, not a bunch of amateur goat worriers on the gravy train to Armageddon who answer to the great architect.

Never say never, but the chances of this being even a plan z for Celtic is as likely as Dave King not having a full length mirror and a throne in his bedroom.

  5. Ernie,

Your Marxist friends had great skills in getting rid of political opponents, clergy etc.

That said, Billy’s quote also struck me as unwise.

  6. CeltFish, more than a fair point, we are used to amateurs running the game.

The English FA are not that, switcheroos are not on.

I do maintain, Atlantic League, playing under the English FA, or 10-in-a-row, in that order would be my preferences.

    Goat worriers:-)))))))))))

Look forward to seeing you! We’ll do the buying!

  8. petec and St stivs….

I really share your hopes but the reality is much different.

We are 24 (twenty four lol) points ahead of A and 32 (thirty two) ahead of DU.

Hibs of several years ago were the “great white hope” but they had no chance of retaining the Browns, Thomsons, O’Connors etc.

The debts may be soft loans but they’re not gifts. If the debts are not a burden on football ops that implies having no debt would be no advantage.

Before you think I’m just a miserable old sod I really hope I’m wrong.

The game in this country needs a complete re-invention and needs a period of protectionism. Maybe then the likes of A and DU have some sort of chance.

For me its not enough that they may currently be more than a match for Sevco!

  9. My friends in Celtic,

Reading back I agree with eddieinkirkmichael in respect of competition in our game.

Whether we like it or not, without a team from Govan challenging ( Which looks increasingly unlikely ) we will continue to win the league for the foreseeable. One off cup games will always be an exception.

With the greatest of respect to relevant parties, the idea of subsidising our rivals with a share of CL money to keep their young players is an absolute non starter. Never mind the board, the supporters would never agree to that. I could never agree to that.

Subsidise to move downward to create a level playing field. No.

There is only one feasible answer if the Huns ( In all shape or form ) are spent and that is to move south of the M 74 as ryecatcher states.

    HH, Always in Celtic.

  12. I have serious issues with the Celtic board and I’ve not attended a home game since the Motherwell match in December. In summary there’s lots to fix…

    I’ll be renewing.

Sitting in my Granda’s living room listening to BBC Scotland’s commentary of the 1974 cup final win over Dundee Utd is my first clear memory of CELTIC. I know now that my daily walks around the back roads of Airdrie, exploring the lost villages with a dose of heroic Celtic wins and a constant battle against officialdom and an all powerful enemy, shaped this present day Tim.

    Thanks Granda.

He would be an extremely happy man today and for a realist he’d still be finding it hard to grasp. The Rebels have won!

My gripes are all about how we treat and deal with our own fans but I’m not going to weaken Celtic FC; I’ll debate from within as he is watching me.

    Hail Hail fellow Celts

  13. Roy Croppie, great post mhate.

    Debate, discuss, protest from within.

This is how we can affect change.

    Top post.

  14. Know what makes me prouder than anything about Celtic FC and our fans?

    Reputation is kudos.

Like lots of people on here I travel and have worked in various known and some obscure locations in Europe and used to travel a lot in South East Asia too.

Celtic and our fans are respected everywhere from Buckie to Bangkok.

Sevco are a tiny little brand outside of Scotland and that’s what hurts them more than anything.

In fact, along with 25th May 1967 …….that’s what killed the club that spawned them.

  15. Scottish football season ends on 11 May. Anyone out there know if it is possible for Sevco to go into administration in the next two weeks ….

or will they need to take a 15 point deduction into the championship ( as a new club first time administration).

My sore sides. Looking forward to the zombie canibal fest over the next two weeks as the spivs have it out with the other spivs.

    Hail Hail

  16. Ryecatcher, Sorry mate, Computer crashed.

I was last in Anfield in 1972 watching Shankly’s Reds beat Bobby Robson’s Ipswich Town.

I am no Liverpool supporter, nor an EPL fan but have been moved to tears recently regarding the events of the anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster.

It may be a kind of “Justice” when they win the league for their captain who has put his entire career into his club.

I purchased a wee memento that day in 1972 – I would like you to have it.

I’ll be in touch in August when I come home.

  17. emeraldbee…

    Sorry you’re wrong!

    DU did not clear debt.

They swapped bank debt for debt to individuals.

This certainly takes pressure off as the loans are now soft but it does not remove the duty of care the club has to protect the ‘investment’ of their friends.

To others who have commented I agree the clubs are in the main getting themselves sorted out financially and competition between the clubs other than Celtic is much better and that is a very good thing BUT…

they are a million miles away from challenging for the league. It would actually take Celtic to give up some of their advantage monetarily or structurally for any meaningful closing of the gap to occur. Or as someone mentioned earlier…for a managerial genious to emerge.

More chance now we are on our own moving elsewhere or being part of another league set up. Previously we were seen as two cheeks of the same arse and we had to come as a couple. Just pray for another couple of years before Frankenstein’s prodigy gets near the Premier League to break the illusion even more. As we have seen, their MSM lackeys are under direction to mention our name with thems as often as possible.
