Champions League clarity for Celtic

889

Celtic have received some clarity concerning their first Champions League qualifying round opponents after this week’s first leg results in qualifying round two.  The five matches that could provide an opponent for Celtic all produced hot favourites to progress.

Sheriff Tiraspol, who won away in Armenia, are 22 games into their league campaign and top the Moldovan table.  HJK Helsinki, who won 7-0 on Tuesday night’s Champions League qualifier, are joint top in Finland after 17 games.

All other expected opponents won 3-0 at home in the first leg.  Neftchi Baku are top of the Azerbaijan league after 16 games.  Molde are two points off the pace in Norway after 15 games.  AEL Limassol are Celtic’s only potential opponents who have yet to start their campaign.

If Celtic are to progress to the group stage they will have to overcome stiffer opposition than any of these teams in the final qualifying round, so we should look forward to a stiff test.

Loved the We are Celtic Supporters video from Celtic TV (below).  Great quotes from Jimmy McGrory, Tommy Burns, Billy McNeill, Paul McStay, Jock Stein and the original “<insert name> is more than a football club” from Sir Robert Kelly, a few decades before it was picked up in Catelonia.

So there I am in the kitchen, makin’ stew and cleaning my black suede boots with Radio4 dribbling on in the background…..and I can feel the rage quotient rising in my head……why is it that when these ‘news presenters’ talk to a union leader it’s with tones of absolute hostility and disdain and a sneer in their voices……but if they’re talkin’ to a completely pompous buffoon like W. Hague,or a serially smooth liar like Chris Grayling,or a psychopathically twisted individual like I.D. Smith it’s with reverential and deeply respectful grovelling?

  19. “Shortly after midnight on the morning of Monday 22 July 2002, Mr Gerard Lawlor, a 19 year old man was shot dead in Floral Road, a short distance from the junction with the Antrim Road. At the time of his death he was wearing a white top with dark blue hoops, along with a pair of Adidas tracksuit bottoms. He had recently left the Bellevue Arms Public House and was on his way home.”

The above is taken from a PSNI statement issued after Gerard’s murder. The top was that of a football club in the east end of Glasgow but obviously the PSNI mistook the green for dark blue!

Earlier that day he had played his last match as a talented mid fielder for his beloved St Enda’s. Standing at six foot three he was regarded as a Gaelic football star of the future. After his murder St Enda’s retired the no 9 jersey for two seasons.

Members of the family were on holiday in Newcastle, County Down, when police called to break the news of his death.

Parish priest, Father Dan Whyte, who administered the last rites, said the community must reject the terrorists who carried out the killing.

The Northern Secretary has condemned the killing as a vicious attack which was “beneath contempt”.

Dr John Reid said no community grievance or political cause could ever justify such action. He said those responsible for the killing must and would be brought to justice.

He said the onus was on paramilitaries who talk peace to prove it by their actions. Ten years later no-one has been charged with Gerard’s murder. Shortly after the slaying the UFF admitted responsibility.

A local Sinn Fein Councillor said the shooting was a deliberate attempt by loyalists to murder members of a Catholic family.

Gerard Lawlor was the last Catholic to be shot dead as a result of the Troubles. His death was one of the first sectarian murders to be investigated by the PSNI, which assumed its powers the previous November.

His 10th Anniversary occurs this weekend.

His family and friends have invited a panel of internationally respected, independent jurists to assess the evidence and the complaints of Gerard’s family with regards to the ineffectiveness of the state’s

response to Gerard’s murder, and specifically their complaint that his murder was preventable. The family are frustrated and demoralised at the fact that there has been no one charged with any offence connected to Gerard’s murder, and that as such there has been no trial, a complaint to the Police Ombudsman lodged in January 2007 has still not been resolved, and furthermore that the most perfunctory of legal processes in the sudden death of any citizen, his Inquest has yet to be heard by the Coroners Court.

The panel will include Jane Winter (British Irish Rights Watch), Gemma McKeown (Committee for the Administration of Justice) and Professor Bill Rolston from the Transitional Justice Institute, at UUJ. The event is being co-hosted by Relatives for Justice, St Enda’s GAC and Kevin R Winters and Co Solicitors.

Any Tims based in the Belfast area should show their support for and solidarity with Gerard’s family by attending the Community Enquiry to be held at St Enda’s GAC Hightown Rd Glengormley on Saturday at 12.30pm sharp.

I don’t blame Celtic but rather the company ‘Kitbag’ who they’ve farmed the online service out to. They’re based in Cheshire and clearly deal with lots of other clubs’ merchandise too. My advice: there needs to be better liaison between the Celtic Store and Kitbag.

  21. I would love to see us bringing in some new players.

A commanding centre half, a creative midfielder and another out and out goal scorer would be tickety boo.

However, I can’t see it happening, certainly not unless Ki goes for somewhere in the 5-8m bracket. There will be a lot of belt tightening this season until the impact of recent events is assessed and evaluated. I can live with that, for now anyway.

It reminds me of the TV advert where the wee girl ponders the decision, “Daddy or chips?” as her favourite.

    “No huns or new players?”

Some of the comments around Europe on here amaze me ” .. it’s a bonus etc etc” Even Neil says we need to make our mark this year

We have less player choices than last year, the qualifiers start in 2 weeks and we have not got the players we said we would need. We will be lucky to get past Norwegian or Finish opposition in my view if drawn against them.

Europe is abosolutely vital for us this year even more so with Rankers demise to keep the fans coming and to stimulate sponsorship and our reputation. We are in a situation where we are 99% guaranteed titles for 3 years so a bit of up front investment would help us build and sustain a decent Eurpopean campaign

Have to say our inactivity in the market is worrying. Hope I am wrong BTW

they have this exchange system for old Celtic tops, send them off to Africa whatever, good idea – ye get a T-shirt in exchange allegedly worth 15quid

had a look at the T-shirt, big “Rangers” mention on the front, a bit of a duff grey effort – decided to keep my old Celtic top for offering another time

    overall customer experience…

    6.5 out of 10

no much enthusiasm, no much professionalism, could do a bit better

also, Sauchiehall shop has another 4yrs of the lease remaining – location is a wee bit up the hill out of the way – he new wee Tesco opening beside it may up the customer numbers – would also be good to open a Silverburn shoppoing centre store – chokka there – rates be higher tho i suppose
