Champions League clarity for Celtic

Celtic have received some clarity concerning their first Champions League qualifying round opponents after this week’s first leg results in qualifying round two.  The five matches that could provide an opponent for Celtic all produced hot favourites to progress.

Sheriff Tiraspol, who won away in Armenia, are 22 games into their league campaign and top the Moldovan table.  HJK Helsinki, who won 7-0 on Tuesday night’s Champions League qualifier, are joint top in Finland after 17 games.

All other expected opponents won 3-0 at home in the first leg.  Neftchi Baku are top of the Azerbaijan league after 16 games.  Molde are two points off the pace in Norway after 15 games.  AEL Limassol are Celtic’s only potential opponents who have yet to start their campaign.

If Celtic are to progress to the group stage they will have to overcome stiffer opposition than any of these teams in the final qualifying round, so we should look forward to a stiff test.

Loved the We are Celtic Supporters video from Celtic TV (below).  Great quotes from Jimmy McGrory, Tommy Burns, Billy McNeill, Paul McStay, Jock Stein and the original “<insert name> is more than a football club” from Sir Robert Kelly, a few decades before it was picked up in Catelonia.

the biggest problem we face is the demands to spend every penny of our income on players while neglecting the infustructure that underpins our potiential earning. ask supporters what they want: a player or a celtic/ irish/scot museum and i bet 99% say the player, yet it could be argued the museum would earn the club more money over the longer term and would increase potential earning, same as cafe/ restuarant / hotel etc…

DD for me is a businessman who came into celtic for the love of the club and the status of owning celtic. no-one could argue that he has attempted to grow the club from domestic/ international basis. celtic is like any other business in the sense that without initial investment there is little to no chance of significant growth. i remember when fergus was building celtic park, the buzz, the excitment etc… now at the time i recall having a chat with a few celtic fans who said they would never fill a 60,000 capacity staduim but we did and we did it for several years and we can again, but we need people at the helm who desire to talk up celtic and to invest in the dream to look to a bright future rather than the doom and down that has surrounded the club for the last 4 years.

I was born in Greenock(no sniggering at the back there!!), to Italian parents! Moved to Ayrshire(!!) in the early 60s, and, jeez oh, I will be 60 myself in 2 years time! Don’t feel it though and, ahem, if I do say so myself I think I don’t look a day over 55!

Totally agree with everything you say! Celtic are a worldwide brand who are held back by playing in a ‘diddy league’! Some on here might disagree, but it’s the truth! Compare TV money for example! However, I do feel that the PLC board need to do more to project the club: This is not a criticism of the board, but an honest opinion.

What’s the point of having people like DD, Ian Bankier and Ian Livingston on the board and business heavyweights like Denis O’Brien as shareholders? Cafe/bar at CP? Great idea! Fan zone outside CP on match days? Yes please! Club museum(which I believe will happen)? Of course! Continual upkeep of the infrastructure in and around CP? Essential!

P.S. Relatively happy with the draw; we should make it through to the final qualifying round!
