Champions League clarity for Celtic

889

Celtic have received some clarity concerning their first Champions League qualifying round opponents after this week’s first leg results in qualifying round two.  The five matches that could provide an opponent for Celtic all produced hot favourites to progress.

Sheriff Tiraspol, who won away in Armenia, are 22 games into their league campaign and top the Moldovan table.  HJK Helsinki, who won 7-0 on Tuesday night’s Champions League qualifier, are joint top in Finland after 17 games.

All other expected opponents won 3-0 at home in the first leg.  Neftchi Baku are top of the Azerbaijan league after 16 games.  Molde are two points off the pace in Norway after 15 games.  AEL Limassol are Celtic’s only potential opponents who have yet to start their campaign.

If Celtic are to progress to the group stage they will have to overcome stiffer opposition than any of these teams in the final qualifying round, so we should look forward to a stiff test.

Loved the We are Celtic Supporters video from Celtic TV (below).  Great quotes from Jimmy McGrory, Tommy Burns, Billy McNeill, Paul McStay, Jock Stein and the original “<insert name> is more than a football club” from Sir Robert Kelly, a few decades before it was picked up in Catelonia.

    Good link….

I have not seen that before.

Just how Happy are Celtic in where we are right now?

Never Happy until we bring our Celtic Brand that supercedes Barca or whoever is pushing the boundaries in footballing excellence.

Footballing excellence is about challenging every stereotype imaginable.

I hope that the Amazing team from Aberdeen I watched at Ravenscraig last year makes it all the way into their first team.

Amazing technical ability and it was like watching BARCA.

The Exiled Tim has called constantly for the refs to be disbanded.

The longer OGILVIE is in situ the more damage is being done to the Scottish Game.

I know Celtic are trying to stay hands off to negate the impact of the Hun realisation they are controlled rockets…..

Ogilvie is hangin in there like a mad hangman, almost as if he is wanting CELTIC to ask for his removal.

I hope the rest of Scottish Football sees beyond Stewart Regan and Neil Doncaster…………………

    I’m a loser baby

    Sydeny Tim,

Have to say, I agree with you on this one. Its not even so much that we need to go out and spend big on a CH but there isn’t really even a mention or a hint of us looking at one on loan or a bosman to slightly increase our chances on getting into the group stages. As you say there has been a fair slice been taken off the wage bill in recent weeks, would it really be a massive gamble to get in one or two loan signings to bolster our prospects in the short term?

    That is a mentalist view.

  4. Morning Celts and happy Friday!

Sydney Tim I agree that Celtics finances won’t be negatively affected by the demise of the HunsIL, our ST sales look like they’re improved and IF we get into CL proper then we will have a decent income from there.

The reality for us is the CFC will not spend money on better quality players until we earn the CL dosh. I don’t like it any more than you but that’s the way it is.

    happy Friday CSC

Taking Foxys notion a wee bit further, the membership scheme Auldheid proposes would allow Celts who can’t attend CP due to they’re location a chance to contribute more for the benefit of the team.

If the global Celtic support were to join together and contribute to a membership scheme then our club would be stronger for it and the Celts in foreign lands can engage more, add in a decent quality Celtic TV and hey presto we’re cooking the gas and up there with the big boys in Europe.

It’s possible but needs to come from our board strategically with a decent business model to support it.

We have the support but do we have the board to implement it? I hope so!

It makes no difference where you’re from, what you are (excluding nazis), or who you are. If you can afford a season ticket, buy one and become a supporter. if not, stay a “fan”.

some folks on here, well intentioned as they may be, are looking for excuses…..

You never answered the questions, they are not hard ones.

Do you live outside of the UK?

Do you have a season ticket?

  9. Foxy_1888

If Celtic go into the CL, the season tickets will rocket.

My Sons own football is paramount in my thinking right now but I will be taking him to all the Saturday games by buying tickets for relatively poor viewing places, and that is the way it should be. I hope we have the worst seats ever, every game we go to Celtic Park.

Auldheid is way ahead of the game with everything IMO, he is trail blazing with ideas IMO.

It’s brightening up now on the Fylde coast, the open at Lytham should see some sunshine through the clouds.

    Now we`re talking.

    Particularly Celtic T.V.,if poss.

Sorry, but channel `67 reception not good enough in my experience.

    Brilliant suggestion.

In saying that, whilst there’s one season ticket left unsold, is there a “Celtic fan” from foreign lands that has truly played their part?

    I think not.

Membership schemes are for clubs with over subscriptions. We’re not anywhere near there yet.

Any such Membership scheme could be seen by some “fans” as a way out of buying a season ticket yet whilst still be able to claim being a supporter.

Until every season ticket is sold the only “fans” eligible for a Membership scheme should be those who cant afford it.

  14. I think the board are waiting to see if we get by the 2nd round of the CL before spending any money. We should get through this round whoever we play.

The next round is tougher but I still expect us to qualify for the Group stages with this current team.

We played really well in stages last year and if we can play like we did against Udinese then we should fear nobody in the qualifiers.

Agree with you about Celtic Tv, I have the premium service, not many problems with buffering but the actual quality is not great, also to put up a pre season game without any commentary is just amateur, how long does it take to get someone to put the commentary on?

In saying that I would be lost without the service but would expect a club of Celtics size to have better, 10 years to get a service that works on Mac!

    HD it’s not..

It could certainly be improved for the many fans abroad..

C’mon Anthony finger oot, grow the product..

  16. I agree with the posters who want an experienced CH but unless you know different I can’t agree with slagging off the board for doing nothing. Celtic keep their cards close to their chest which leaves the media with nothing to report. It doesn’t mean Celtic are doing nothing.

    Transfer news

    Celtic are considering taking Sporting

    The 21-year-old Portugese spent last

They are probably leaving it late as they usually do rather than get players in for the qualifiers.

The squad should be good enough for both rounds, but need to make sure.

  22. Couple of quotes from the mainstream press this morning

Neil Lennon : “we aren’t in the group stages of the champions league and so we can’t speculate to accumulate”

“we are trying to bring guys to the club at an affordable price and if we were to get in we would have a couple of days left in the window to strengthen the squad”

Scott Brown: on pre season “They’re going to have a lot of the ball while well be doing a lot of defending”

“That gives us the the chance to work on the system we might play”

    BTW James McFadden anyone

  23. Anybody know why the Zeus Capital marketing flyer highlights the £6.3 million acquisition of the business and assets of RFC? Where does the extra £800k come from, I thought all the reports refer to £5.5m?

  24. On the topic of spending money just now. Celtic and Neil Lennon in particular has spent two seasons building this team. We have not lost any of our star players. The team matured and got better and better as the Europa League went on against top class opposition.

Qualify for group stage and then bring in a couple of quality players.
