Champions League clarity for Celtic

889

Celtic have received some clarity concerning their first Champions League qualifying round opponents after this week’s first leg results in qualifying round two.  The five matches that could provide an opponent for Celtic all produced hot favourites to progress.

Sheriff Tiraspol, who won away in Armenia, are 22 games into their league campaign and top the Moldovan table.  HJK Helsinki, who won 7-0 on Tuesday night’s Champions League qualifier, are joint top in Finland after 17 games.

All other expected opponents won 3-0 at home in the first leg.  Neftchi Baku are top of the Azerbaijan league after 16 games.  Molde are two points off the pace in Norway after 15 games.  AEL Limassol are Celtic’s only potential opponents who have yet to start their campaign.

If Celtic are to progress to the group stage they will have to overcome stiffer opposition than any of these teams in the final qualifying round, so we should look forward to a stiff test.

Loved the We are Celtic Supporters video from Celtic TV (below).  Great quotes from Jimmy McGrory, Tommy Burns, Billy McNeill, Paul McStay, Jock Stein and the original “<insert name> is more than a football club” from Sir Robert Kelly, a few decades before it was picked up in Catelonia.

He did ask and the blogs about the secrecy around answering even that question.

Considering it was supposed to out after Easter we would expect some reason as to the hold up…

    Jack Reyna RIP.

Heart goes out to the family.God bless you all in these trying times.

  3. Celtic on the Inter site they have it as one of theirs mate. They have it with an * next to it then it refers later to the Calciopoli. No doubt the huns and the msm will still try to give them it too.

The real question l had is how will this period be remember as…what title will it be given to act as a shorthand reference? The problem for me is that we ate too close to it and there are too many people groups involved it is not just about rangers. This is the biggest scandal in world football.

Good to hear similar views, being out of Scotland when I get the rare chance someone shows interest in Celtic winning the league or the demise of wee daft challangers I get exicited to update them.

  5. Gotta tell you this : our best friends, outside of family, were over at ours tonight. A lovelier pair of people you coudn’t meet….anyway the lady of the duo has stage 4 advanced colon cancer. She is getting top-notch treatment though, as her work provided her with private insurance and they’re not quibbling over the cost of her treatment and she is responding well, against all the odds.

So, brave people, and we had a great evening.

They, because they really are good friends, are interested in hearing how all things Celtic are going; so,I was telling them all about the campaign for wee Oscar, and the fundraising via the CQN badges, and that we had a change pot on the go. My mate then just reached in his pocket, took out a huge handful of weighty smash and said,” Stick that in the pot for me.” I was really touched.

In the hardest of times themselves, and yet they have good thoughts for someone they had never heard of before.

    I’ve made them honorary Tims.

  6. I think (apology in advance as working from memory is not my strengh these days) on the RTC site it was mentioned that these cases can be up to a year even for what seems an easier case to adjudicate on than this one. lf there has be a deliberate hold up then questions have to be asked. For me it is just something we have to wait for.

  7. Just seen the scores from Europe tonight – in amongst the Vojvodinas and the Suduvas and the St Patricks there’s a whole host of new names to me. Just when you think you know a bit about European football…

You got me thinking mate the words that the msm will use will shy away from the one they should use when titles are awarded to their rightful owner that is Rangers have been ‘stripped’ of their stolen trophies. This gives over the image of the disgrace they have brought to Scottish football.

Not that the titles were merely re-allocated or handed over. The usage of words is vital in all of this.

There is a line in the movie Airplane that goes along the lines of someone asking how did it all start, to which he gets the reply…well first there was a big bang and then the earth cooled down and then the dinosaurs came.

Well that how l fell trying to explain it, where do you start, what can you leave out to help make it easy for people to understand. When the book is written on this it is going to be a long one.

Am I the only person who would find it absolutely hilarious if the Forces of Darkness actually won the EBT case? I mean, they are now dead, in Division 3, stripped of their team, about to be stripped of titles for non-declared payments to players, so it doesn’t really matter if they lose it or not … but I just think it would be fantastic if all of this, their death, their agony, their pain, all of it was … un-necessary.

I think it would be the greatest karmic event of all time.

  13. Paul67,

The first game will undoubtedly be harder than it should be but on the flipside, if we get through, then the following round should not be as hard as it looks on paper as we will have got up to speed well by then.

I don’t really know who I’d prefer in the draw as they are all very awkward for whatever reason. Last season we started off very sluggish and as long as the players/management have learned from that, collectively and individually, then we should be ok.

There is one player that we must try and make sure is available for these games because he has the real intelligence to read a game and the mood of a game and how it is going, very like Neil Lennon in fact, and that man is Beram Kayal. I would say it is imperative he plays to make sure our passage into the final qualifying game is relatively hassle free, it goes without saying he will be just as important in the last qualifier if we make it through. Others definitely the have potential but looking at it before a ball is kicked if I could make a certain starter of all the games he would be the man without a shadow of a doubt.

  15. Celtic have got a unique opportunity here .

Alright we have to get through qualification but we’re going have a great chance of UCL football most seasons over the next decade and beyond .

Being able to avoid the boom and bust and high turnover of “personality” players that the big Euro clubs have, gives us a unique chance to build a high level “together” squad.

If we can qualify over a couple of seasons and keep building in strength to the existing squad there will be no need to buy at crazy prices or sell to the first bidder.

Got a really good feeling for us get through into the groups and doing okay , get them into our stadium and their going to know their in a game!

Can’t wait for it to start and be able to look forward to football after all the crap.

I have high hopes for the CL this season but these first games are a bloody nightmare because of the amount of money available to these teams who probably pay their players a lot less than Celtic do. They will literally run through a brick wall to earn the money that is on offer for success.

I was very encouraged by our away form in Europe last season and as you say, let’s get these teams back at a jumping Celtic Park and beat them all.

Beram has been a sensational signing IMO, he has had a bad run of luck with injuries (and thugs allowed to assault him) but he has been worth every Sheckel.

The reason Neil Lennon done so well in the game was because of his intelligence, with his physique/ pace he had to be really good at every other aspect of the game, and he was. I see an even better player in Beram than Neil because of his mobility more than anything else but I definitely see a sharp operator upstairs in the most important place. I think Andy Carroll’s brain is downstairs, definitely a talented player though.

  21. petec on 20 July, 2012 at 01:52

Agree their going to be tough games no matter who we get, as the prize is huge and they’ll be determined. As usual a lot will depend on the away legs that’s where we’ve fallen before but at the moment we’ve got a good squad.

Really excited this could be the year we get back into the groups and with everything that brings, it could really open up the next few years for us, that really would be the best way to leave them behind .

    Looking forward

Just read about it a few minutes ago, very sad news.

I just hope they can get over this as a family. It does not matter how much money they have, this will devastate them and they would give up everything they have to have their boy back.

Claudio was a quality footballer even though he played for that team that we use to play against.

  23. Rascar Capac on

    Petec, me old friend.

Aye, big Andy can play, but his transfer was ridiculous, the whole value of a championship club.

    Or many millions of rangerses.

I don’t think Beram is blessed with oor Neil’s brains, but he is much more athletic.

The dive into every tackle like my families lives depend on it is not a good long term strategy.

  24. jimphil70

I feel getting into the CL group stages this season is absolutely (using fplg phraseology) essential to really kicking on as a club, quickly. If we don’t then we will find it hard to keep all of our up and coming players we have brought in from around the world.

The CL is the place these guys desire to be playing at and there is no better club to play at that level for, than Celtic, especially as their careers start off. The way things are, and because of where we are as a Football Club, we can’t realistically hold on to these players when they are heading into their prime years (make Great profits however) but we can certainly keep on building more blocks into an infrastructure that will eventually mean we take our place at the very top of the Footballing game.
