Champions League clarity for Celtic

889

Celtic have received some clarity concerning their first Champions League qualifying round opponents after this week’s first leg results in qualifying round two.  The five matches that could provide an opponent for Celtic all produced hot favourites to progress.

Sheriff Tiraspol, who won away in Armenia, are 22 games into their league campaign and top the Moldovan table.  HJK Helsinki, who won 7-0 on Tuesday night’s Champions League qualifier, are joint top in Finland after 17 games.

All other expected opponents won 3-0 at home in the first leg.  Neftchi Baku are top of the Azerbaijan league after 16 games.  Molde are two points off the pace in Norway after 15 games.  AEL Limassol are Celtic’s only potential opponents who have yet to start their campaign.

If Celtic are to progress to the group stage they will have to overcome stiffer opposition than any of these teams in the final qualifying round, so we should look forward to a stiff test.

Loved the We are Celtic Supporters video from Celtic TV (below).  Great quotes from Jimmy McGrory, Tommy Burns, Billy McNeill, Paul McStay, Jock Stein and the original “<insert name> is more than a football club” from Sir Robert Kelly, a few decades before it was picked up in Catelonia.

Indeed, some things in life transcend football rivalry. For all those in need of a prayer tonight, for all having a black hour, let’s remember them in our thoughts.

Celtic since 1888. More than a football club!

I seem to remember seeing that photograph. As I recollect it the bar was actually closed. That’s probably when Blantyretim headed to the nearest Church. To pray for it to open!

  10. God the lad (Claudio Renya’s son) must have been very young, tragic! Thoughts with the man.

  13. Well played St Pat’s.

0-1 away to Siroki Brijeg in Bosnia-Herzegovina for almost the whole game. And St Pat’s missed a pen. The Siroki equalised right at the death.

  14. How much could we raise by auctioning off the first pic of the KitGhost in the Brechin ‘dugout’,……………..?

That sounds the more feasible story.Peter was telling me you were going to climb one of the mountains in Scotland, better find one where you can drive up.

  16. Enjoyed my first day posting on CQN! My thoughts are with Claudio Reyna and his family for his tragic loss.

    Thank you and goodnight.

  17. oldtim67 and blantyretim Would be a great pleasure to see you both again. I’m sure Zbyszek would be delighted too. My boy’s 9 months now and I’m sure he’d like it too. As far as vodka is concerned you probably remember I don’t do that. Too many Polish weddings!!

Not so much climb a mountain as walk round it, which is not as easy as it sounds. Could be out there for days, weeks even!

    The Foggy Dew

    Traditional

As down the glen one Easter morn to a city fair rode I

There Armed lines of marching men in squadrons passed me by

No fife did hum nor battle drum did sound it’s dread tatoo

But the Angelus bell o’er the Liffey swell rang out through the foggy dew

Right proudly high over Dublin Town they hung out the flag of war

‘Twas better to die ‘neath an Irish sky than at Sulva or Sud El Bar

And from the plains of Royal Meath strong men came hurrying through

While Britannia’s Huns, with their long range guns sailed in through the foggy dew

‘Twas Britannia bade our Wild Geese go that small nations might be free

But their lonely graves are by Sulva’s waves or the shore of the Great North Sea

Oh, had they died by Pearse’s side or fought with Cathal Brugha

Their names we will keep where the fenians sleep ‘neath the shroud of the foggy dew

But the bravest fell, and the requiem bell rang mournfully and clear

For those who died that Eastertide in the springing of the year

And the world did gaze, in deep amaze, at those fearless men, but few

Who bore the fight that freedom’s light might shine through the foggy dew

Ah, back through the glen I rode again and my heart with grief was sore

For I parted then with valiant men whom I never shall see more

But to and fro in my dreams I go and I’d kneel and pray for you,

For slavery fled, O glorious dead, When you fell in the foggy dew.

Was at the Bellamy v Huns match at ibrox when he destroyed them. Never seen anyone before or after with so much pace.

Sadly Bellamy had to go off at half time with what proved to be an all to familiar injury.

Performed brilliantly in only a few games he managed to play for us (v’s Dundee Untied the most memorable).

Considering his damp squib performance v’s Motherwell in the title cruncher he was a massive let down overall.

  25. Sorry i couldn’t reply earlier regarding the tainted titles but working.

Yes i want them to they cheated and the titles should be rewritten to the highest possible finishing team.

It’s just a few boys said on twitter they wouldn’t want them but how good would it be to have won 12 IAR and them knowing it won’t be done again.
